Genesis 26

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 There was a famine in the land (distinct from the earlier one that had occurred in the days of Abraham), and Isaac went down to Abimelech, king of the Philistines in Gerar.	1 Il y eut une famine dans le pays -- en plus de la première famine qui eut lieu du temps d'Abraham-- et Isaac se rendit à Gérar chez Abimélek, roi des Philistins.
2 The LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt, but continue to camp wherever in this land I tell you.	2 Yahvé lui apparut et dit: "Ne descends pas en Egypte; demeure au pays que je te dirai.
3 Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands, in fulfillment of the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.	3 Séjourne dans ce pays-ci, je serai avec toi et te bénirai. Car c'est à toi et à ta race que je donneraitous ces pays-ci et je tiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à ton père Abraham.
4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and give them all these lands, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing--	4 Je rendrai ta postérité nombreuse comme les étoiles du ciel, je lui donnerai tous ces pays et par tapostérité se béniront toutes les nations de la terre,
5 this because Abraham obeyed me, keeping my mandate (my commandments, my ordinances, and my instructions)."	5 en retour de l'obéissance d'Abraham, qui a gardé mes observances, mes commandements, mesrègles et mes lois."
6 So Isaac settled in Gerar.	6 Ainsi Isaac demeura à Gérar.
7 When the men of the place asked questions about his wife, he answered, "She is my sister." He was afraid, if he called her his wife, the men of the place would kill him on account of Rebekah, since she was very beautiful.	7 Les gens du lieu l'interrogèrent sur sa femme et il répondit: "C'est ma sœur." Il eut peur de dire:"Ma femme", pensant: "Les gens du lieu me feront mourir à cause de Rébecca, car elle est belle."
8 But when he had been there for a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, happened to look out of a window and was surprised to see Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Il était là depuis longtemps quand Abimélek, le roi des Philistins, regardant une fois par la fenêtre,vit Isaac qui caressait Rébecca, sa femme.
9 He called for Isaac and said: "She must certainly be your wife! How could you have said, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "I thought I might lose my life on her account."	9 Abimélek appela Isaac et dit: "Pour sûr, c'est ta femme!Comment as-tu pu dire: C'est ma sœur?"Isaac lui répondit:"Je me disais: je risque de mourir à cause d'elle."
10 "How could you do this to us!" exclaimed Abimelech. "It would have taken very little for one of the men to lie with your wife, and you would have thus brought guilt upon us!"	10 Abimélek reprit: "Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait là? Un peu plus, quelqu'un du peuple couchait avecta femme et tu nous chargeais d'une faute!"
11 Abimelech therefore gave this warning to all his men: "Anyone who molests this man or his wife shall forthwith be put to death."	11 Alors Abimélek donna cet ordre à tout le peuple: "Quiconque touchera à cet homme et à safemme sera mis à mort."
12 Isaac sowed a crop in that region and reaped a hundredfold the same year. Since the LORD blessed him,	12 Isaac fit des semailles dans ce pays et, cette année-là, il moissonna le centuple. Yahvé le bénit
13 he became richer and richer all the time, until he was very wealthy indeed.	13 et l'homme s'enrichit, il s'enrichit de plus en plus, jusqu'à devenir extrêmement riche.
14 He acquired such flocks and herds, and so many work animals, that the Philistines became envious of him.	14 Il avait des troupeaux de gros et de petit bétail et de nombreux serviteurs. Les Philistins endevinrent jaloux.
15 (The Philistines had stopped up and filled with dirt all the wells that his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham.)	15 Tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés, -- du temps de son père Abraham, --les Philistins le savaient bouchés et comblés de terre.
16 So Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us; you have become far too numerous for us."	16 Abimélek dit à Isaac: "Pars de chez nous, car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous."
17 Isaac left there and made the Wadi Gerar his regular campsite.	17 Isaac partit donc de là et campa dans la vallée de Gérar, où il s'établit.
18 (Isaac reopened the wells which his father's servants had dug back in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham's death; he gave them the same names that his father had given them.)	18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits qu'avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père Abraham et que lesPhilistins avaient bouchés après la mort d'Abraham, et il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avaitdonnés.
19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the wadi and reached spring water in their well,	19 Les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent dans la vallée et ils trouvèrent là un puits d'eaux vives.
20 the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's servants, saying, "The water belongs to us!" So the well was called Esek, because they had challenged him there.	20 Mais les bergers de Gérar entrèrent en dispute avec les bergers d'Isaac, disant: "L'eau est à nous!"Isaac nomma ce puits Eseq, parce qu'ils s'étaient querellés avec lui.
21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one too; so it was called Sitnah.	21 Ils creusèrent un autre puits et il y eut encore une dispute à son propos; il le nomma Sitna.
22 When he had moved on from there, he dug still another well; but over this one they did not quarrel. It was called Rehoboth, because he said, "The LORD has now given us ample room, and we shall flourish in the land."	22 Alors il partit de là et creusa un autre puits, et il n'y eut pas de dispute à son propos; il le nommaRehobot et dit:"Maintenant Yahvé nous a donné le champ libre pour que nous prospérions dans le pays."
23 From there Isaac went up to Beer-sheba.	23 De là il monta à Bersabée.
24 The same night the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am the God of your father Abraham. You have no need to fear, since I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."	24 Yahvé lui apparut cette nuit-là et dit: "Je suis le Dieu de ton père Abraham. Ne crains rien, car jesuis avec toi. Je te bénirai, je multiplierai ta postérité, en considération de mon serviteur Abraham."
25 So he built an altar there and invoked the LORD by name. After he had pitched his tent there, his servants began to dig a well nearby.	25 Il bâtit là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahvé. Il dressa là sa tente. Les serviteurs d'Isaac forèrentun puits.
26 Abimelech had meanwhile come to him from Gerar, accompanied by Ahuzzath, his councilor, and Phicol, the general of his army.	26 Abimélek vint le voir de Gérar, avec Ahuzzat son familier et Pikol le chef de son armée.
27 Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have driven me away from you?"	27 Isaac leur dit: "Pourquoi venez-vous à moi, puisque vous me haïssez et que vous m'avez renvoyéde chez vous?"
28 They answered: "We are convinced that the LORD is with you, so we propose that there be a sworn agreement between our two sides--between you and us. Let us make a pact with you:	28 Ils répondirent: "Nous avons eu l'évidence que Yahvé était avec toi et nous avons dit: Qu'il y aitun serment entre nous et toi et concluons une alliance avec toi:
29 you shall not act unkindly toward us, just as we have not molested you, but have always acted kindly toward you and have let you depart in peace. Henceforth, 'The LORD'S blessing be upon you!'"	29 jure de ne nous faire aucun mal, puisque nous ne t'avons pas molesté, que nous ne t'avons fait quedu bien et t'avons laissé partir en paix. Maintenant, tu es un béni de Yahvé."
30 Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.	30 Il leur prépara un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
31 Early the next morning they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell, and they departed from him in peace.	31 Levés de bon matin, ils se firent un serment mutuel. Puis Isaac les congédia et ils le quittèrent enpaix.
32 That same day Isaac's servants came and brought him news about the well they had been digging; they told him, "We have reached water!"	32 Or ce fut ce jour-là que les serviteurs d'Isaac lui apportèrent des nouvelles du puits qu'ilscreusaient et ils lui dirent: "Nous avons trouvé l'eau!"
33 He called it Shibah; hence the name of the city, Beer-sheba, to this day.	33 Il appela le puits Sabée, d'où le nom de la ville, Bersabée, jusqu'à maintenant.
34 When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hivite.	34 Quand Esaü eut 40 ans, il prit pour femmes Yehudit, fille de Bééri le Hittite, et Basmat, filled'Elôn le Hittite.
35 But they became a source of embitterment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Elles furent un sujet d'amertume pour Isaac et pour Rébecca.
