LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
και εγενετο οτε ηκουσαν τα εθνη κυκλοθεν οτι ωκοδομηθη το θυσιαστηριον και ενεκαινισθη το αγιασμα ως το προτερον και ωργισθησαν σφοδρα1 When the Gentiles round about heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary consecrated as before, they were very angry.
και εβουλευσαντο του αραι το γενος ιακωβ τους οντας εν μεσω αυτων και ηρξαντο του θανατουν εν τω λαω και εξαιρειν2 So they decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob who were among them, and they began to massacre and persecute the people.
και επολεμει ιουδας προς τους υιους ησαυ εν τη ιδουμαια την ακραβαττηνην οτι περιεκαθηντο τον ισραηλ και επαταξεν αυτους πληγην μεγαλην και συνεστειλεν αυτους και ελαβεν τα σκυλα αυτων3 Then Judas attacked the sons of Esau at Akrabattene in Idumea, because they were blockading Israel; he defeated them heavily, overcame and despoiled them.
και εμνησθη της κακιας υιων βαιαν οι ησαν τω λαω εις παγιδα και σκανδαλον εν τω ενεδρευειν αυτους εν ταις οδοις4 He also remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who had become a snare and a stumbling block to the people by ambushing them along the roads.
και συνεκλεισθησαν υπ' αυτου εις τους πυργους και παρενεβαλεν επ' αυτους και ανεθεματισεν αυτους και ενεπυρισε τους πυργους αυτης εν πυρι συν πασιν τοις ενουσιν5 He forced them to take refuge in towers, which he besieged; he vowed their annihilation and burned down the towers along with all the persons in them.
και διεπερασεν επι τους υιους αμμων και ευρεν χειρα κραταιαν και λαον πολυν και τιμοθεον ηγουμενον αυτων6 Then he crossed over to the Ammonites, where he found a strong army and a large body of people with Timothy as their leader.
και συνηψεν προς αυτους πολεμους πολλους και συνετριβησαν προ προσωπου αυτου και επαταξεν αυτους7 He fought many battles with them, routed them, and struck them down.
και προκατελαβετο την ιαζηρ και τας θυγατερας αυτης και ανεστρεψεν εις την ιουδαιαν8 After seizing Jazer and its villages, he returned to Judea.
και επισυνηχθησαν τα εθνη τα εν τη γαλααδ επι τον ισραηλ τους οντας επι τοις οριοις αυτων του εξαραι αυτους και εφυγον εις δαθεμα το οχυρωμα9 The Gentiles in Gilead assembled to attack and destroy the Israelites who were in their territory; these then fled to the stronghold of Dathema.
και απεστειλαν γραμματα προς ιουδαν και τους αδελφους αυτου λεγοντες επισυνηγμενα εστιν εφ' ημας τα εθνη κυκλω ημων του εξαραι ημας10 They sent a letter to Judas and his brothers saying: "The Gentiles around us have combined against us to destroy us,
και ετοιμαζονται ελθειν και προκαταλαβεσθαι το οχυρωμα εις ο κατεφυγομεν και τιμοθεος ηγειται της δυναμεως αυτων11 and they are preparing to come and seize this stronghold to which we have fled. Timothy is the leader of their army.
νυν ουν ελθων εξελου ημας εκ χειρος αυτων οτι πεπτωκεν εξ ημων πληθος12 Come at once and rescue us from them, for many of us have fallen.
και παντες οι αδελφοι ημων οι οντες εν τοις τουβιου τεθανατωνται και ηχμαλωτικασιν τας γυναικας αυτων και τα τεκνα και την αποσκευην και απωλεσαν εκει ωσει μιαν χιλιαρχιαν ανδρων13 All our kinsmen who were among the Tobiads have been killed; the Gentiles have carried away their wives and children and their goods, and they have slain there about a thousand men."
ετι αι επιστολαι ανεγιγνωσκοντο και ιδου αγγελοι ετεροι παρεγενοντο εκ της γαλιλαιας διερρηχοτες τα ιματια απαγγελλοντες κατα τα ρηματα ταυτα14 While they were reading this letter, suddenly other messengers, in torn clothes, arrived from Galilee to deliver a similar message:
λεγοντες επισυνηχθαι επ' αυτους εκ πτολεμαιδος και τυρου και σιδωνος και πασαν γαλιλαιαν αλλοφυλων του εξαναλωσαι ημας15 that the inhabitants of Ptolemais, Tyre, and Sidon, and the whole of Gentile Galilee had joined forces to destroy them.
ως δε ηκουσεν ιουδας και ο λαος τους λογους τουτους επισυνηχθη εκκλησια μεγαλη βουλευσασθαι τι ποιησωσιν τοις αδελφοις αυτων τοις ουσιν εν θλιψει και πολεμουμενοις υπ' αυτων16 When Judas and the people heard this, a great assembly convened to consider what they should do for their unfortunate kinsmen who were being attacked by enemies.
και ειπεν ιουδας σιμωνι τω αδελφω αυτου επιλεξον σεαυτω ανδρας και πορευου και ρυσαι τους αδελφους σου τους εν τη γαλιλαια εγω δε και ιωναθαν ο αδελφος μου πορευσομεθα εις την γαλααδιτιν17 Judas said to his brother Simon: "Choose men for yourself, and go, rescue your kinsmen in Galilee; I and my brother Jonathan will go to Gilead."
και κατελιπεν ιωσηπον τον του ζαχαριου και αζαριαν ηγουμενον του λαου μετα των επιλοιπων της δυναμεως εν τη ιουδαια εις τηρησιν18 In Judea he left Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, leader of the people, with the rest of the army to guard it.
και ενετειλατο αυτοις λεγων προστητε του λαου τουτου και μη συναψητε πολεμον προς τα εθνη εως του επιστρεψαι ημας19 "Take charge of these people," he commanded them, "but do not fight against the Gentiles until we return."
και εμερισθησαν σιμωνι ανδρες τρισχιλιοι του πορευθηναι εις την γαλιλαιαν ιουδα δε ανδρες οκτακισχιλιοι εις την γαλααδιτιν20 Three thousand men were allotted to Simon, to go into Galilee, and eight thousand men to Judas, for Gilead.
και επορευθη σιμων εις την γαλιλαιαν και συνηψεν πολεμους πολλους προς τα εθνη και συνετριβη τα εθνη απο προσωπου αυτου21 Simon went into Galilee and fought many battles with the Gentiles. They were crushed before him,
και εδιωξεν αυτους εως της πυλης πτολεμαιδος και επεσον εκ των εθνων εις τρισχιλιους ανδρας και ελαβεν τα σκυλα αυτων22 and he pursued them to the very gate of Ptolemais. About three thousand men of the Gentiles fell, and he gathered their spoils.
και παρελαβεν τους εκ της γαλιλαιας και εν αρβαττοις συν ταις γυναιξιν και τοις τεκνοις και παντα οσα ην αυτοις και ηγαγεν εις την ιουδαιαν μετ' ευφροσυνης μεγαλης23 He took with him the Jews who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children and all that they had, and brought them to Judea with great rejoicing.
και ιουδας ο μακκαβαιος και ιωναθαν ο αδελφος αυτου διεβησαν τον ιορδανην και επορευθησαν οδον τριων ημερων εν τη ερημω24 Judas Maccabeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and marched for three days through the desert.
και συνηντησαν τοις ναβαταιοις και απηντησαν αυτοις ειρηνικως και διηγησαντο αυτοις παντα τα συμβαντα τοις αδελφοις αυτων εν τη γαλααδιτιδι25 There they met some Nabateans, who received them peacefully and told them all that had happened to the Jews in Gilead:
και οτι πολλοι εξ αυτων συνειλημμενοι εισιν εις βοσορρα και βοσορ εν αλεμοις χασφω μακεδ και καρναιν πασαι αι πολεις αυται οχυραι και μεγαλαι26 "Many of them have been imprisoned in Bozrah, in Bosor near Alema, in Chaspho, Maked, and Carnaim"--all of these are large, fortified cities--
και εν ταις λοιπαις πολεσιν της γαλααδιτιδος εισιν συνειλημμενοι εις αυριον τασσονται παρεμβαλειν επι τα οχυρωματα και καταλαβεσθαι και εξαραι παντας τουτους εν ημερα μια27 "and some have been imprisoned in other cities of Gilead. Tomorrow their enemies plan to attack the strongholds and to seize and destroy all these people in one day."
και απεστρεψεν ιουδας και η παρεμβολη αυτου οδον εις την ερημον βοσορρα αφνω και κατελαβετο την πολιν και απεκτεινε παν αρσενικον εν στοματι ρομφαιας και ελαβεν παντα τα σκυλα αυτων και ενεπρησεν αυτην πυρι28 Thereupon Judas suddenly changed direction with his army, marched across the desert to Bozrah, and captured the city. He slaughtered all the male population, took all their possessions, and set fire to the city.
και απηρεν εκειθεν νυκτος και επορευοντο εως επι το οχυρωμα29 He led his army from that place by night, and they marched toward the stronghold of Dathema.
και εγενετο εωθινη ηραν τους οφθαλμους αυτων και ιδου λαος πολυς ου ουκ ην αριθμος αιροντες κλιμακας και μηχανας καταλαβεσθαι το οχυρωμα και επολεμουν αυτους30 When morning came, they looked ahead and saw a countless multitude of people, with ladders and devices for capturing the stronghold, and beginning to attack the people within.
και ειδεν ιουδας οτι ηρκται ο πολεμος και η κραυγη της πολεως ανεβη εως ουρανου σαλπιγξιν και κραυγη μεγαλη31 When Judas perceived that the struggle had begun and that the noise of the battle was resounding to heaven with trumpet blasts and loud shouting,
και ειπεν τοις ανδρασιν της δυναμεως πολεμησατε σημερον υπερ των αδελφων ημων32 he said to the men of his army, "Fight for our kinsmen today."
και εξηλθεν εν τρισιν αρχαις εξοπισθεν αυτων και εσαλπισαν ταις σαλπιγξιν και εβοησαν εν προσευχη33 He came up behind them with three columns blowing their trumpets and shouting in prayer.
και επεγνω η παρεμβολη τιμοθεου οτι μακκαβαιος εστιν και εφυγον απο προσωπου αυτου και επαταξεν αυτους πληγην μεγαλην και επεσον εξ αυτων εν εκεινη τη ημερα εις οκτακισχιλιους ανδρας34 When the army of Timothy realized that it was Maccabeus, they fell back before him, and he inflicted on them a crushing defeat. About eight thousand of their men fell that day.
και απεκλινεν εις αλεμα και επολεμησεν αυτην και κατελαβετο αυτην και απεκτεινεν παν αρσενικον αυτης και ελαβεν τα σκυλα αυτης και ενεπρησεν αυτην εν πυρι35 Then he turned toward Alema and attacked and captured it; he killed all the male population, plundered the place, and burned it down.
εκειθεν απηρεν και προκατελαβετο την χασφω μακεδ και βοσορ και τας λοιπας πολεις της γαλααδιτιδος36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor, and the other cities of Gilead.
μετα δε τα ρηματα ταυτα συνηγαγεν τιμοθεος παρεμβολην αλλην και παρενεβαλεν κατα προσωπον ραφων εκ περαν του χειμαρρου37 After these events Timothy assembled another army and camped opposite Raphon, on the other side of the stream.
και απεστειλεν ιουδας κατασκοπευσαι την παρεμβολην και απηγγειλαν αυτω λεγοντες επισυνηγμενα εισιν προς αυτον παντα τα εθνη τα κυκλω ημων δυναμις πολλη σφοδρα38 Judas sent men to spy on the camp, and they reported to him: "All the Gentiles around us have rallied to him, making a very large force;
και αραβας μεμισθωνται εις βοηθειαν αυτοις και παρεμβαλλουσιν περαν του χειμαρρου ετοιμοι του ελθειν επι σε εις πολεμον και επορευθη ιουδας εις συναντησιν αυτων39 they have also hired Arabs to help them, and have camped beyond the stream, ready to attack you." So Judas went forward to attack them.
και ειπεν τιμοθεος τοις αρχουσιν της δυναμεως αυτου εν τω εγγιζειν ιουδαν και την παρεμβολην αυτου επι τον χειμαρρουν του υδατος εαν διαβη προς ημας προτερος ου δυνησομεθα υποστηναι αυτον οτι δυναμενος δυνησεται προς ημας40 As Judas and his army were approaching the running stream, Timothy said to the officers of his army: "If he crosses over to us first, we shall not be able to resist him; he will certainly defeat us.
εαν δε δειλανθη και παρεμβαλη περαν του ποταμου διαπερασομεν προς αυτον και δυνησομεθα προς αυτον41 But if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the river, we will cross over to him and defeat him."
ως δε ηγγισεν ιουδας επι τον χειμαρρουν του υδατος εστησεν τους γραμματεις του λαου επι του χειμαρρου και ενετειλατο αυτοις λεγων μη αφητε παντα ανθρωπον παρεμβαλειν αλλα ερχεσθωσαν παντες εις τον πολεμον42 But when Judas reached the running stream, he stationed the officers of the people beside the stream and gave them this order: "Do not allow any man to pitch a tent; all must go into battle."
και διεπερασεν επ' αυτους προτερος και πας ο λαος οπισθεν αυτου και συνετριβησαν προ προσωπου αυτων παντα τα εθνη και ερριψαν τα οπλα αυτων και εφυγον εις το τεμενος καρναιν43 He was the first to cross to the attack, with all the people behind him, and the Gentiles were crushed before them; they threw away their arms and fled to the temple enclosure at Carnaim.
και προκατελαβοντο την πολιν και το τεμενος ενεπυρισαν εν πυρι συν πασιν τοις εν αυτω και ετροπωθη καρναιν και ουκ ηδυναντο ετι υποστηναι κατα προσωπον ιουδου44 The Jews captured that city and burnt the enclosure with all who were in it. So Carnaim was subdued, and Judas met with no more resistance.
και συνηγαγεν ιουδας παντα ισραηλ τους εν τη γαλααδιτιδι απο μικρου εως μεγαλου και τας γυναικας αυτων και τα τεκνα αυτων και την αποσκευην παρεμβολην μεγαλην σφοδρα ελθειν εις γην ιουδα45 Then he assembled all the Israelites, great and small, who were in Gilead, with their wives and children and their goods, a great crowd of people, to go into the land of Judah.
και ηλθον εως εφρων και αυτη πολις μεγαλη επι της οδου οχυρα σφοδρα ουκ ην εκκλιναι απ' αυτης δεξιαν η αριστεραν αλλ' η δια μεσου αυτης πορευεσθαι46 When they reached Ephron, a large and strongly fortified city along the way, they found it impossible to encircle it on either the right or the left; they would have to march right through it.
και απεκλεισαν αυτους οι εκ της πολεως και ενεφραξαν τας πυλας λιθοις47 But the men in the city shut them out and blocked up the gates with stones.
και απεστειλεν προς αυτους ιουδας λογοις ειρηνικοις λεγων διελευσομεθα δια της γης σου του απελθειν εις την γην ημων και ουδεις κακοποιησει υμας πλην τοις ποσιν παρελευσομεθα και ουκ ηβουλοντο ανοιξαι αυτω48 Then Judas sent them this peaceful message: "We wish to cross your territory in order to reach our own; no one will harm you; we will only march through." But they would not open to him.
και επεταξεν ιουδας κηρυξαι εν τη παρεμβολη του παρεμβαλειν εκαστον εν ω εστιν τοπω49 So Judas ordered a proclamation to be made in the camp that everyone make an attack from the place where he was.
και παρενεβαλον οι ανδρες της δυναμεως και επολεμησεν την πολιν ολην την ημεραν εκεινην και ολην την νυκτα και παρεδοθη η πολις εν χειρι αυτου50 When the men of the army took up their positions, he assaulted the city all that day and night, and it was delivered to him.
και απωλεσεν παν αρσενικον εν στοματι ρομφαιας και εξερριζωσεν αυτην και ελαβεν τα σκυλα αυτης και διηλθεν δια της πολεως επανω των απεκταμμενων51 He slaughtered every male, razed and plundered the city, and passed through it over the slain.
και διεβησαν τον ιορδανην εις το πεδιον το μεγα κατα προσωπον βαιθσαν52 Then they crossed the Jordan to the great plain in front of Beth-shan;
και ην ιουδας επισυναγων τους εσχατιζοντας και παρακαλων τον λαον κατα πασαν την οδον εως ηλθεν εις γην ιουδα53 and Judas kept rounding up the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way, until he reached the land of Judah.
και ανεβησαν εις ορος σιων εν ευφροσυνη και χαρα και προσηγαγον ολοκαυτωματα οτι ουκ επεσεν εξ αυτων ουθεις εως του επιστρεψαι εν ειρηνη54 They ascended Mount Zion in joy and gladness and offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen; they had returned in safety.
και εν ταις ημεραις εν αις ην ιουδας και ιωναθαν εν γη γαλααδ και σιμων ο αδελφος αυτου εν τη γαλιλαια κατα προσωπον πτολεμαιδος55 During the time that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee opposite Ptolemais,
ηκουσεν ιωσηφ ο του ζαχαριου και αζαριας αρχοντες της δυναμεως των ανδραγαθιων και του πολεμου οια εποιησαν56 Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, the leaders of the army, heard about the brave deeds and the fighting that they were doing.
και ειπον ποιησωμεν και αυτοι εαυτοις ονομα και πορευθωμεν πολεμησαι προς τα εθνη τα κυκλω ημων57 They said, "Let us also make a name for ourselves by going out and fighting against the Gentiles around us."
και παρηγγειλεν τοις απο της δυναμεως της μετ' αυτων και επορευθησαν επι ιαμνειαν58 They gave orders to the men of their army who were with them, and marched toward Jamnia.
και εξηλθεν γοργιας εκ της πολεως και οι ανδρες αυτου εις συναντησιν αυτοις εις πολεμον59 But Gorgias and his men came out of the city to meet them in battle.
και ετροπωθη ιωσηπος και αζαριας και εδιωχθησαν εως των οριων της ιουδαιας και επεσον εν τη ημερα εκεινη εκ του λαου ισραηλ εις δισχιλιους ανδρας60 Joseph and Azariah were beaten, and were pursued to the frontiers of Judea, and about two thousand Israelites fell that day.
και εγενηθη τροπη μεγαλη εν τω λαω οτι ουκ ηκουσαν ιουδου και των αδελφων αυτου οιομενοι ανδραγαθησαι61 It was a bad defeat for the people, because they had not obeyed Judas and his brothers, thinking that they would do brave deeds.
αυτοι δε ουκ ησαν εκ του σπερματος των ανδρων εκεινων οις εδοθη σωτηρια ισραηλ δια χειρος αυτων62 But they did not belong to the family of those men to whom it was granted to achieve Israel's salvation.
και ο ανηρ ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου εδοξασθησαν σφοδρα εναντι παντος ισραηλ και των εθνων παντων ου ηκουετο το ονομα αυτων63 The valiant Judas and his brothers were greatly renowned in all Israel and among all the Gentiles, wherever their name was heard;
και επισυνηγοντο προς αυτους ευφημουντες64 and men gathered about them and praised them.
και εξηλθεν ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου και επολεμουν τους υιους ησαυ εν τη γη τη προς νοτον και επαταξεν την χεβρων και τας θυγατερας αυτης και καθειλεν τα οχυρωματα αυτης και τους πυργους αυτης ενεπυρισεν κυκλοθεν65 Then Judas and his brothers went out and attacked the sons of Esau in the country toward the south; he took Hebron and its villages, and he destroyed its strongholds and burned the towers around it.
και απηρεν του πορευθηναι εις γην αλλοφυλων και διεπορευετο την μαρισαν66 He then set out for the land of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.
εν τη ημερα εκεινη επεσον ιερεις εν πολεμω βουλομενοι ανδραγαθησαι εν τω αυτους εξελθειν εις πολεμον αβουλευτως67 At that time some priests fell in battle who had gone out rashly to fight in their desire to distinguish themselves.
και εξεκλινεν ιουδας εις αζωτον γην αλλοφυλων και καθειλεν τους βωμους αυτων και τα γλυπτα των θεων αυτων κατεκαυσεν πυρι και εσκυλευσεν τα σκυλα των πολεων και επεστρεψεν εις γην ιουδα68 Judas then turned toward Azotus in the land of the Philistines. He destroyed their altars and burned the statues of their gods; and after plundering their cities he returned to the land of Judah.
