1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.	1 L’ange de Yahvé monta de Guilgal vers Bokim: “Je vous ai fait monter d’Égypte, dit-il, et je vous ai conduits dans ce pays que j’ai promis par serment à vos pères. J’avais dit: Je ne romprai jamais mon Alliance avec vous,
2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?	2 et de votre côté vous ne ferez pas d’alliance avec les habitants de ce pays: vous renverserez leurs autels. Mais vous ne m’avez pas écouté. Qu’avez-vous fait là?
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.	3 Voici donc ce que j’ai décidé: Je ne les chasserai pas de devant vous! Ils seront sans cesse à vos côtés et leurs dieux deviendront un piège pour vous.”
4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.	4 Lorsque l’ange de Yahvé parla ainsi à tout Israël, le peuple poussa des cris et se mit à pleurer.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.	5 C’est pourquoi ils appelèrent cet endroit Bokim et ils y offrirent des sacrifices à Yahvé.
6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.	6 Quand Josué avait congédié le peuple, les Israélites étaient retournés chacun à sa part d’héritage, cherchant à occuper le pays.
7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.	7 Le peuple servit Yahvé durant toute la vie de Josué et durant toute la vie des anciens qui lui succédèrent. Ils avaient vu en effet les prodiges accomplis par Yahvé en faveur d’Israël.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.	8 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de Yahvé, mourut alors: il avait 110 ans.
9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.	9 On l’enterra dans le territoire qu’il avait reçu en héritage à Timnat-Héres, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.
10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.	10 Lorsque cette génération fut à son tour réunie à ses pères, une autre génération lui succéda qui ne connaissait ni Yahvé, ni ce qu’il avait fait pour Israël.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:	11 Les Israélites firent donc ce qui est mal au regard de Yahvé, ils servirent les Baals.
12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.	12 Ils abandonnèrent Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères qui les avait fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, et ils suivirent d’autres dieux. Ils se prosternèrent devant les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient, et ils attirèrent sur eux la colère de Yahvé.
13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.	13 Dès qu’ils abandonnèrent Yahvé pour servir le Baal et les Astartés,
14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.	14 la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra aux mains de pillards qui les dépouillèrent, il les vendit à leurs ennemis tout à l’entour: maintenant ils ne résistaient plus à leurs ennemis.
15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.	15 Chaque fois qu’ils partaient en guerre, la Main de Yahvé se dressait contre eux pour leur malheur comme Yahvé le leur avait dit, comme Yahvé le leur avait juré: ils étaient dans une très grande détresse.
16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.	16 Alors Yahvé leur donna des juges qui les sauvèrent de la main de ceux qui les dépouillaient.
17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.	17 Mais ils n’écoutèrent pas davantage leurs juges et ils se prostituèrent à la suite d’autres dieux; ils se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se détournèrent bien vite de la voie sur laquelle leurs pères avaient marché quand ils écoutaient les commandements de Yahvé. Eux faisaient tout le contraire.
18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.	18 Lorsque Yahvé leur envoyait des juges, Yahvé était avec le juge et, durant toute la vie du juge, il les délivrait de la main de leurs ennemis. En effet, Yahvé avait pitié d’eux quand il entendait leurs cris sous l’oppression et la persécution.
19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.	19 Mais dès que le juge était mort, ils recommençaient à faire le mal, pire que leurs pères. Ils se mettaient à la traîne d’autres dieux, ils les servaient et se prosternaient devant eux. Ils ne voulaient pas renoncer à leurs mauvaises actions; ils s’entêtaient dans cette voie.
20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;	20 La colère de Yahvé s’enflamma donc contre Israël; il déclara: “Puisque cette nation a violé mon Alliance que j’avais donnée à leurs pères et qu’ils ne m’écoutent pas,
21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:	21 moi non plus, je ne chasserai plus devant eux la moindre des peuplades que Josué a laissées à sa mort.
22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.	22 Elles me serviront pour mettre Israël à l’épreuve: peut-être voudront-ils suivre les chemins de Yahvé comme leurs pères ont fait.”
23 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.	23 Yahvé laissa donc tranquilles ces nations qu’il n’avait pas livrées aux mains de Josué et il ne se pressa pas de les chasser.
