1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.	1 Considerai que amor nos mostrou o Pai (em querer) que sejamos chamados filhos de Deus! E nós o somos. O mundo não nos conhece, porque não o conhece a ele.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.	2 Caríssimos, agora somos filhos de Deus, mas não se manifestou ainda o que seremos (um dia). Sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele (na glória), porque o veremos como ele é.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.	3 Todo o que tem esta esperança nele, torna-se puro, assim como também ele é puro.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.	4 Todo o que comete pecado transgride a lei, porque o pecado é uma transgressão da lei.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.	5 Sabeis que ele apareceu para tirar os pecados e que nele não há pecado.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.	6 Todo o que permanece nele, não peca; todo o que peca, não o viu, nem o conheceu (com amor).
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.	7 Filhinhos, ninguém vos seduza. Aquele que pratica a justiça, é justo, como também ele é justo.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.	8 Aquele que comete o pecado, é do demônio, porque o demônio peca desde o principio. Para destruir as obras do demônio é que o Filho de Deus se manifestou.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.	9 Todo o que nasceu de Deus, não comete o pecado, porque a semente de Deus (que é a graça santificante) permanece nele: não pode pecar porque nasceu de Deus.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.	10 Nisto se distinguem os filhos de Deus dos filhos do demônio: todo o que não pratica a justiça, não é de Deus, e também não o é, o que não ama seu irmão,
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.	11 visto que a mensagem que ouvistes, desde o princípio, é esta: Amemo-nos uns aos outros.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.	12 Não como Caim, que era do (espírito) maligno e matou seu irmão. E por que o matou? Porque as suas obras eram más, e as de seu irmão justas.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.	13 Não vos admireis, irmãos, de que o mundo vos tenha ódio.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.	14 Sabemos que fomos trasladados da morte (do pecado) para a vida (da graça), porque amamos os nossos irmãos. Aquele que não ama, permanece na morte.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.	15 Todo o que tem ódio a seu irmão é um homicida, e vós sabeis que a vida eterna não tem morada em nenhum homicida.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.	16 Nisto conhecemos o amor (de Deus): em ter dado a sua vida por nós. Igualmente nós devemos também (estar prontos a) dar a vida pelos nossos irmãos.
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?	17 Se alguém que possua bens deste mundo, vir o seu irmão em necessidade e lhe fechar o seu coração, como está nele a caridade de Deus?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.	18 Meus filhinhos, não amemos (somente) de palavra e com a língua, mas por obra e em verdade.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.	19 Por isto conhecemos que somos da verdade e tranquilizaremos os nossos corações diante de Deus,
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.	20 seja qual for a censura que o nosso coração nos dirija, porque Deus é maior do que o nosso coração e conhece todas as coisas.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.	21 Caríssimos, se o nosso coração nos não condenar, tenhamos confiança diante de Deus;
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.	22 tudo o que lhe pedirmos, receberemos dele, porque guardamos os seus mandamentos e fazemos o que é agradável a seus olhos.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.	23 E (em resumo) este é o seu mandamento: que creiamos no nome de seu Filho Jesus Cristo e nos amemos uns aos outros, como ele nos mandou.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.	24 O que observa os seus mandamentos, está em Deus, e Deus nele; pelo Espírito que nos deu, sabemos que ele permanece em nós.
