1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,	1 Lettre de Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus par décision de Dieu, pour annoncer la vie qui se trouve dans le Christ Jésus:
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.	2 Timothée, mon cher enfant, reçois de Dieu le Père et du Christ Jésus, notre Seigneur, la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix!
3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;	3 Tu es toujours présent, jour et nuit, dans mes prières, et pour toi je rends grâces à Dieu que je sers en toute sincérité comme l’ont fait mes pères.
4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;	4 Quand je me rappelle tes larmes j’ai hâte de te voir, car cela me remplirait de joie.
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.	5 Je me rappelle ta foi sincère, qu’on trouvait déjà chez ta grand-mère Loïs et ta mère Eunice, et que tu as toi aussi, j’en suis sûr.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.	6 Et c’est la raison pour laquelle je veux réveiller et raviver le don de Dieu que tu as reçu quand je t’ai imposé les mains.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.	7 L’esprit que Dieu nous a donné n’est pas timidité, mais force, amour et maîtrise de soi.
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;	8 Donc ne rougis pas du martyre de notre Seigneur ni de moi quand je suis en prison pour lui. Sois capable de souffrir pour l’Évangile avec la force de Dieu.
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,	9 Ils nous a sauvés, nous appelant pour une sainte vocation, non pas à cause de nos mérites, mais gratuitement et par décision personnelle. Cette décision, prise en Jésus Christ de toute éternité,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:	10 vient de se manifester avec l’apparition de Jésus Christ, notre Sauveur, qui a détruit la mort et fait resplendir la vie dans l’immortalité grâce à l’Évangile.
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.	11 C’est de cela que je suis le prédicateur, l’apôtre et le maître.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.	12 C’est pour cela aussi que je souffre à présent, mais je n’en ai pas honte, car je sais à qui j’ai fait confiance, et je le sais capable de me garder mon dépôt jusqu’au grand jour.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.	13 Prends comme règle les saines paroles que tu m’as entendu dire sur la foi et l’amour selon Jésus Christ,
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.	14 et garde ce précieux dépôt grâce à l’Esprit Saint qui habite en nous.
15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.	15 Tu dois savoir que tous ceux d’Asie m’ont tourné le dos, et parmi eux Phygèle et Hermogène.
16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:	16 Que le Seigneur prenne en pitié la famille d’Onésiphore, car il m’a souvent réconforté et il n’a pas eu honte quand il m’a vu en prison.
17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.	17 Au contraire, il a fait preuve de courage, il m’a réclamé et il m’a obtenu.
18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.	18 Que le Seigneur lui donne de trouver grâce devant lui quand viendra le jour; tu sais mieux que moi tout le service qu’il avait accompli à Éphèse.
