1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.	1 Chacun dans cette vie doit obéir aux représentants de l’autorité. Car il n’y a d’autorité que celle qui vient de Dieu, et les charges publiques ont été voulues par Dieu.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.	2 Donc celui qui résiste à l’autorité s’insurge contre un décret de Dieu, et ceux qui s’insurgent préparent leur propre condamnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:	3 On n’a pas à craindre les chefs quand on fait le bien, mais quand on fait le mal. Veux-tu vivre sans avoir à craindre les autorités? Fais le bien et tu recevras des éloges.
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.	4 Ce sont des agents de Dieu qui t’aident à faire le bien, et si tu agis mal, fais bien attention: ce n’est pas pour rien qu’ils sont armés. Ils sont encore les agents de Dieu quand ils punissent les malfaiteurs.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.	5 Donc il faut obéir, et pas seulement par peur du châtiment mais en conscience.
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.	6 C’est ainsi que vous devez payer les impôts. C’est encore comme fonctionnaires de Dieu qu’ils en exigent le paiement.
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.	7 Donc payez à chacun ce que vous lui devez: l’impôt s’il a droit à l’impôt, la taxe s’il a droit à la taxe, l’obéissance si c’est l’obéissance, le respect si c’est le respect.
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.	8 Tâchez de ne rien devoir à personne, si ce n’est l’amour que vous vous devez entre vous. Et quand on aime le prochain, on est en règle avec la Loi:
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.	9 Tu aimeras le prochain comme toi-même. Cette seule parole résume les commandements: Tu ne commettras pas l’adultère, tu ne tueras pas, tu ne voleras pas, tu ne désireras pas, et tous les autres encore.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.	10 L’amour ne fait pas de mal au prochain; l’amour est donc la parfaite réponse à la Loi.
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.	11 Comprenez le temps où nous sommes: c’est l’heure de nous réveiller, car notre salut est déjà plus proche que lorsque nous sommes venus à la foi.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.	12 La nuit est bien avancée et le jour est proche. Laissons donc là les œuvres des ténèbres, et revêtons une armure de lumière.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.	13 Agissons noblement, comme en plein jour: pas d’excès de table et d’alcool, pas de coucheries ni de débauche, pas de querelles ni de jalousie.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.	14 Revêtez-vous du Seigneur Jésus, le Christ, et ne faites pas ce que la chair vous suggère; ne vous mettez pas au service de ses convoitises.
