KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.1 At that time some people who were present there told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices.
And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?2 He said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans?
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.3 By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!
Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?4 Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them --do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem?
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.5 By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!"
He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.6 And he told them this parable: "There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none,
Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?7 he said to the gardener, 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (So) cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?'
And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:8 He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.9 it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.'"
And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.10 He was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.11 And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.12 When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are set free of your infirmity."
And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.13 He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, "There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day."
The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?15 The Lord said to him in reply, "Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering?
And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?16 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?"
And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.17 When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.
Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?18 Then he said, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.19 It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and 'the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.'"
And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?20 Again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed (in) with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened."
And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.22 He passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem.
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,23 Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them,
Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.
When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:25 After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from.'
Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.26 And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.'
But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.27 Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where (you) are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!'
There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.28 And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out.
And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.29 And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.
And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.30 For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.31 At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, "Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you."
And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.32 He replied, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose.
Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.33 Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.'
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!34 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling!
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.35 Behold, your house will be abandoned. (But) I tell you, you will not see me until (the time comes when) you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
