KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.1 When he returned to Capernaum, some time later word went round that he was in the house;
And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.2 and so many people collected that there was no room left, even in front of the door. He was preachingthe word to them
And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.3 when some people came bringing him a paralytic carried by four men,
And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.4 but as they could not get the man to him through the crowd, they stripped the roof over the place whereJesus was; and when they had made an opening, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic lay.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, 'My child, your sins are forgiven.'
But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,6 Now some scribes were sitting there, and they thought to themselves,
Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?7 'How can this man talk like that? He is being blasphemous. Who but God can forgive sins?'
And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?8 And at once, Jesus, inwardly aware that this is what they were thinking, said to them, 'Why do you havethese thoughts in your hearts?
Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?9 Which of these is easier: to say to the paralytic, "Your sins are forgiven" or to say, "Get up, pick up your stretcher and walk"?
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)10 But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority to forgive sins on earth' --
I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.11 he said to the paralytic-'I order you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go off home.'
And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.12 And the man got up, and at once picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of everyone, so thatthey were al astonished and praised God saying, 'We have never seen anything like this.'
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.13 He went out again to the shore of the lake; and al the people came to him, and he taught them.
And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.14 As he was walking along he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him,'Fol ow me.' And he got up and fol owed him.
And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.15 When Jesus was at dinner in his house, a number of tax collectors and sinners were also sitting attable with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of them among his fol owers.
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?16 When the scribes of the Pharisee party saw him eating with sinners and tax col ectors, they said to hisdisciples, 'Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?'
When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.17 When Jesus heard this he said to them, 'It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I cameto cal not the upright, but sinners.'
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?18 John's disciples and the Pharisees were keeping a fast, when some people came to him and said tohim, 'Why is it that John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?'
And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.19 Jesus replied, 'Surely the bridegroom's attendants cannot fast while the bridegroom is still with them?As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.20 But the time wil come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then, on that day, they wilfast.
No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.21 No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pul s away from it, thenew from the old, and the tear gets worse.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.22 And nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine wil burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins too. No! New wine into fresh skins!'
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.23 It happened that one Sabbath day he was taking a walk through the cornfields, and his disciplesbegan to make a path by plucking ears of corn.
And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?24 And the Pharisees said to him, 'Look, why are they doing something on the Sabbath day that isforbidden?'
And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?25 And he replied, 'Have you never read what David did in his time of need when he and his fol owerswere hungry-
How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?26 how he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the loaves of the offeringwhich only the priests are al owed to eat, and how he also gave some to the men with him?'
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:27 And he said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath;
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.28 so the Son of man is master even of the Sabbath.'
