KING JAMES BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Wisdom lifteth up the head of him that is of low degree, and maketh him to sit among great men.1 The wisdom of the humble shall exalt his head, and shall make him sit in the midst of great men.
Commend not a man for his beauty; neither abhor a man for his outward appearance.2 Praise not a man for his beauty, neither despise a man for his look.
The bee is little among such as fly; but her fruit is the chief of sweet things.3 The bee is small among flying things, but her fruit hath the chiefest sweetness.
Boast not of thy clothing and raiment, and exalt not thyself in the day of honour: for the works of the Lord are wonderful, and his works among men are hidden.4 Glory not in apparel at any time, and be not exalted in the day of thy honour: for the works of the Highest only are wonderful, and his works are glorious, and secret, end hidden.
Many kings have sat down upon the ground; and one that was never thought of hath worn the crown.5 Many tyrants have sat on the throne, and he whom no man would think on, hath worn the crown.
Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; and the honourable delivered into other men's hands.6 Many mighty men have been greatly brought down, and the glorious have been delivered into the hand of others.
Blame not before thou hast examined the truth: understand first, and then rebuke.7 Before thou inquire, blame no man: and when thou hast inquired, reprove justly.
Answer not before thou hast heard the cause: neither interrupt men in the midst of their talk.8 Before thou hear, answer not a word: and interrupt not others in the midst of their discourse.
Strive not in a matter that concerneth thee not; and sit not in judgment with sinners.9 Strive not in a matter which doth not concern thee, and sit not in judgment with sinners.
My son, meddle not with many matters: for if thou meddle much, thou shalt not be innocent; and if thou follow after, thou shalt not obtain, neither shalt thou escape by fleeing.10 My son, meddle not with many matters: and if thou be rich, thou shalt not be free from sin: for if thou pursue after thou shalt not overtake: and if thou run before thou shalt not escape.
There is one that laboureth, and taketh pains, and maketh haste, and is so much the more behind.11 There is an ungodly man that laboureth, and maketh haste, and is in sorrow, and is so much the more in want.
Again, there is another that is slow, and hath need of help, wanting ability, and full of poverty; yet the eye of the Lord looked upon him for good, and set him up from his low estate,12 Again, there is an inactive man that wanteth help, is very weak in ability, and full of poverty:
And lifted up his head from misery; so that many that saw from him is peace over all the13 Yet the eye of God hath looked upon him for good, and hath lifted him up from his low estate, and hath exalted his head: and many have wondered at him, and have glorified God.
Prosperity and adversity, life and death, poverty and riches, come of the Lord.14 Good things and evil, life and death, poverty and riches, are from God.
Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the law, are of the Lord: love, and the way of good works, are from him.15 Wisdom and discipline, and the knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him
Error and darkness had their beginning together with sinners: and evil shall wax old with them that glory therein.16 Error and darkness are created with sinners: and they that glory in evil things, grow old in evil.
The gift of the Lord remaineth with the ungodly, and his favour bringeth prosperity for ever.17 The gift of God abideth with the just, and his advancement shall have success for ever.
There is that waxeth rich by his wariness and pinching, and this his the portion of his reward:18 There is one that is enriched by living sparingly, and this is the portion of his reward.
Whereas he saith, I have found rest, and now will eat continually of my goods; and yet he knoweth not what time shall come upon him, and that he must leave those things to others, and die.19 In that he saith: I have found me rest, and now I will eat of my goods alone:
Be stedfast in thy covenant, and be conversant therein, and wax old in thy work.20 And he knoweth not what time shall pass, and that death approacheth, and that he must leave all to others, and shall die.
Marvel not at the works of sinners; but trust in the Lord, and abide in thy labour: for it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord on the sudden to make a poor man rich.21 Be steadfast in thy covenant, and be conversant therein, and grow old in the work of thy commandments.
The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly, and suddenly he maketh his blessing flourish.22 Abide not in the works of sinners. But trust in God, and stay in thy place.
Say not, What profit is there of my service? and what good things shall I have hereafter?23 For it is easy in the eyes of God on a sudden to make the poor man rich.
Again, say not, I have enough, and possess many things, and what evil shall I have hereafter?24 The blessing of God maketh haste to reward the just, and in a swift hour his blessing beareth fruit.
In the day of prosperity there is a forgetfulness of affliction: and in the day of affliction there is no more remembrance of prosperity.25 Say not: What need I, and what good shall I have by this?
For it is an easy thing unto the Lord in the day of death to reward a man according to his ways.26 Say not: I am sufficient for myself: and what shall I be made worse by this?
The affliction of an hour maketh a man forget pleasure: and in his end his deeds shall be discovered.27 In the day of good things be not unmindful of evils: and in the day of evils be not unmindful of good things:
Judge none blessed before his death: for a man shall be known in his children.28 For it is easy before God in the day of death to reward every one according to his ways.
Bring not every man into thine house: for the deceitful man hath many trains.29 The affliction of an hour maketh one forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the disclosing of his works.
Like as a partridge taken [and kept] in a cage, so is the heart of the proud; and like as a spy, watcheth he for thy fall:30 Praise not any man before death, for a man is known by his children.
For he lieth in wait, and turneth good into evil, and in things worthy praise will lay blame upon thee.31 Bring not every man into thy house: for many are the snares of the deceitful.
Of a spark of fire a heap of coals is kindled: and a sinful man layeth wait for blood.32 For as corrupted bowels send forth stinking breath, and as the partridge is brought into the cage, and as the roe into the snare: so also is the heart of the proud, and as a spy that looketh on the fall of his neighbour.
Take heed of a mischievous man, for he worketh wickedness; lest he bring upon thee a perpetual blot.33 For he lieth in wait and turneth good into evil, and on the elect he will lay a blot.
Receive a stranger into thine house, and he will disturb thee, and turn thee out of thine own.34 Of one spark cometh a great fire, and of one deceitful man much blood: and a sinful man lieth in wait for blood.
Take heed to thyself of a mischievous man, for he worketh evils: lest he bring upon thee reproach for ever.
Receive a stranger in, and he shall overthrow thee with a whirlwind, and shall turn thee out of thy own.
