1 In the hundred forty and ninth year it was told Judas, that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea,	1 El año ciento cuarenta y nueve, los hombres de Judas se enteraron de que Antíoco Eupátor avanzaba contra Judea con un ejército numeroso,
2 And with him Lysias his protector, and ruler of his affairs, having either of them a Grecian power of footmen, an hundred and ten thousand, and horsemen five thousand and three hundred, and elephants two and twenty, and three hundred chariots armed with hooks.	2 y que con él venía Lisias, su tutor y encargado de los asuntos de Estado. Ambos conducían un ejército griego de ciento diez mil soldados, cinco mil trescientos jinetes, veintidós elefantes y trescientos carros armados de cuchillas.
3 Menelans also joined himself with them, and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus, not for the safeguard of the country, but because he thought to have been made governor.	3 También se unió a ellos Menelao, el cual, con toda mala intención, trataba de ganarse a Antíoco, no para salvar a su patria, sino para ser restablecido en su cargo.
4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus' mind against this wicked wretch, and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief, so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea, and to put him to death, as the manner is in that place.	4 Pero el Rey de los reyes provocó la indignación de Antíoco contra aquel criminal, porque Lisias le hizo ver que aquel hombre era el causante de todos los males. Entonces Antíoco ordenó que lo llevaran a Berea para que lo mataran según las costumbres del lugar.
5 Now there was in that place a tower of fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes.	5 Allí hay una torre de veinticinco metros, llena de ceniza, provista de una máquina giratoria inclinada por todas partes hacia la ceniza.
6 And whosoever was condemned of sacrilege, or had committed any other grievous crime, there did all men thrust him unto death.	6 Es costumbre arrojar en ese lugar a los reos de robo sacrílego o de algún otro crimen enorme, a fin de hacerlos morir.
7 Such a death it happened that wicked man to die, not having so much as burial in the earth; and that most justly:	7 Con este suplicio murió el impío Menelao, sin ser ni siquiera sepultado en la tierra.
8 For inasmuch as he had committed many sins about the altar, whose fire and ashes were holy, he received his death in ashes.	8 Esto le sucedió con toda justicia; en efecto, aquel que había perpetrado tantos crímenes contra el altar, cuyo fuego y ceniza son sagrados, encontró él mismo la muerte en la ceniza.
9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty mind to do far worse to the Jews, than had been done in his father's time.	9 El rey avanzaba, animado de brutales sentimientos, dispuesto a tratar a los judíos con más crueldad que su mismo padre.
10 Which things when Judas perceived, he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day, that if ever at any other time, he would now also help them, being at the point to be put from their law, from their country, and from the holy temple:	10 Al enterarse de esto, Judas ordenó a sus tropas que invocaran al Señor día y noche, para que también esa vez, como en otras ocasiones, acudiera en auxilio de los que estaban en peligro de ser despojados de la Ley, de la patria y del Santuario,
11 And that he would not suffer the people, that had even now been but a little refreshed, to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations.	11 y no permitiera que el pueblo, que apenas comenzaba a reanimarse, cayera en manos de paganos blasfemos.
12 So when they had all done this together, and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting, and lying flat upon the ground three days long, Judas, having exhorted them, commanded they should be in a readiness.	12 Todos unánimemente cumplieron la orden y suplicaron al Señor misericordioso con lamentaciones, ayunos y postraciones, durante tres días seguidos. Entonces Judas los arengó, animándolos a estar preparados.
13 And Judas, being apart with the elders, determined, before the king's host should enter into Judea, and get the city, to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord.	13 Después de reunirse en particular con los Ancianos, resolvió no esperar que el ejército del rey invadiera Judea y se adueñara de la ciudad, sino ponerse en marcha para decidir la situación con la ayuda de Dios.
14 So when he had committed all to the Creator of the world, and exhorted his soldiers to fight manfully, even unto death, for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the commonwealth, he camped by Modin:	14 Judas, dejándolo todo en manos del Creador del universo, exhortó a sus compañeros a luchar valerosamente hasta la muerte por las leyes, el Santuario, la ciudad, la patria y las instituciones. Luego acampó en las inmediaciones de Modín.
15 And having given the watchword to them that were about him, Victory is of God; with the most valiant and choice young men he went in into the king's tent by night, and slew in the camp about four thousand men, and the chiefest of the elephants, with all that were upon him.	15 Y dando a sus hombres este santo y seña: «Victoria de Dios», atacó durante la noche con los jóvenes más aguerridos el campamento del rey. Así dio muerte a unos dos mil hombres del ejército y al más grande de los elefantes con su conductor.
16 And at last they filled the camp with fear and tumult, and departed with good success.	16 Finalmente, sembrando el pánico y la confusión en el ejército, se retiraron victoriosos.
17 This was done in the break of the day, because the protection of the Lord did help him.	17 Al amanecer, ya todo había terminado, gracias a la protección que el Señor había brindado a Judas.
18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews, he went about to take the holds by policy,	18 El rey, que había sufrido en carne propia la audacia de los judíos, intentó apoderarse de sus fortalezas de manera sistemática.
19 And marched toward Bethsura, which was a strong hold of the Jews: but he was put to flight, failed, and lost of his men:	19 Se acercó a Betsur, plaza fuerte de los judíos, pero fue rechazado, puesto en fuga y vencido,
20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary.	20 Judas envió a los sitiados todo lo que necesitaban,
21 But Rhodocus, who was in the Jews' host, disclosed the secrets to the enemies; therefore he was sought out, and when they had gotten him, they put him in prison.	21 pero Rodoco, un hombre del ejército judío, revelaba los secretos al enemigo. Por eso fue buscado, detenido y ejecutado.
22 The king treated with them in Bethsum the second time, gave his hand, took their's, departed, fought with Judas, was overcome;	22 El rey volvió a tratar con los habitantes de Betsur, hizo las paces con ellos y se retiró. Luego atacó a las tropas de Judas, pero fue derrotado.
23 Heard that Philip, who was left over the affairs in Antioch, was desperately bent, confounded, intreated the Jews, submitted himself, and sware to all equal conditions, agreed with them, and offered sacrifice, honoured the temple, and dealt kindly with the place,	23 En ese momento supo que Filipo, a quien había dejado en Antioquía al frente del gobierno, se había sublevado. Muy consternado, mandó llamar a los judíos y juró someterse a sus legítimas demandas. Después de esta reconciliación, ofreció un sacrificio, honró al Santuario y se mostró generoso con el Lugar santo.
24 And accepted well of Maccabeus, made him principal governor from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians;	24 El rey prestó una buena acogida al Macabeo y dejó a Hegemónidas como gobernador desde Tolemaida hasta la región de los guerraínos.
25 Came to Ptolemais: the people there were grieved for the covenants; for they stormed, because they would make their covenants void:	25 Luego se trasladó a Tolemaida, pero sus habitantes descontentos por ese tratado, se indignaron y querían anular lo convenido.
26 Lysias went up to the judgment seat, said as much as could be in defence of the cause, persuaded, pacified, made them well affected, returned to Antioch. Thus it went touching the king's coming and departing.	26 Entonces Lisias subió a la tribuna y defendió el asunto lo mejor que pudo. Así los persuadió, logró calmarlos y los dispuso favorablemente. Después partió para Antioquía. Esto es lo que sucedió con la expedición y la retirada del rey.
