1 In the hundred forty and ninth year it was told Judas, that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea,	1 En l’an 149, Judas et ses hommes apprirent qu’Antiocus Eupator avançait sur la Judée avec une grande armée.
2 And with him Lysias his protector, and ruler of his affairs, having either of them a Grecian power of footmen, an hundred and ten thousand, and horsemen five thousand and three hundred, and elephants two and twenty, and three hundred chariots armed with hooks.	2 Il était accompagné de son tuteur Lysias, administrateur du royaume. Chacun avait une armée grecque de 110 000 fantassins, 5 300 cavaliers, 22 éléphants et 300 chars armés de faux.
3 Menelans also joined himself with them, and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus, not for the safeguard of the country, but because he thought to have been made governor.	3 Ménélas s’était joint à eux et, avec une grande astuce, il s’empressait auprès d’Antiocus, non pas pour le salut de la patrie, mais avec l’espoir de retrouver sa charge.
4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus' mind against this wicked wretch, and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief, so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea, and to put him to death, as the manner is in that place.	4 Or voici que Lysias le dénonça comme la cause de tous les maux, et le Roi des rois excita la colère d’Antiocus contre ce criminel. Antiocus aussitôt ordonna de le conduire à Bérée pour le mettre à mort selon la coutume de l’endroit.
5 Now there was in that place a tower of fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes.	5 Il y a en effet en ce lieu une tour de 50 coudées de haut, remplie de cendres et munie d’une machine tournante qui de tous côtés fait retomber dans la cendre.
6 And whosoever was condemned of sacrilege, or had committed any other grievous crime, there did all men thrust him unto death.	6 C’est là qu’on pousse, pour le mettre à mort, celui qui est coupable d’un vol sacrilège ou de tout autre crime odieux,
7 Such a death it happened that wicked man to die, not having so much as burial in the earth; and that most justly:	7 et c’est ainsi que devait mourir ce traître Ménélas: même la terre refusa de le recevoir.
8 For inasmuch as he had committed many sins about the altar, whose fire and ashes were holy, he received his death in ashes.	8 C’était justice, car il avait commis beaucoup de péchés contre l’autel dont le feu et la cendre sont sacrés: c’est dans la cendre qu’il trouva la mort.
9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty mind to do far worse to the Jews, than had been done in his father's time.	9 Le roi s’avançait donc avec des intentions barbares: il voulait faire voir aux Juifs des choses pires encore que ce qu’ils avaient connu sous le règne de son père.
10 Which things when Judas perceived, he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day, that if ever at any other time, he would now also help them, being at the point to be put from their law, from their country, and from the holy temple:	10 Lorsque Judas en fut informé, il ordonna au peuple d’invoquer le Seigneur jour et nuit pour qu’une fois de plus, comme il l’avait fait tant d’autres fois, il vienne en aide à ceux qu’on voulait priver de la Loi, de leur patrie et du Temple Saint.
11 And that he would not suffer the people, that had even now been but a little refreshed, to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations.	11 Il ne pouvait pas abandonner le peuple qui venait à peine de reprendre vie et le laisser tomber aux mains de païens infâmes.
12 So when they had all done this together, and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting, and lying flat upon the ground three days long, Judas, having exhorted them, commanded they should be in a readiness.	12 Lorsque tout le monde eut fini de prier le Seigneur plein de miséricorde avec des pleurs, des jeûnes et des prosternations continuelles durant trois jours, Judas leur adressa la parole et leur commanda de se tenir prêts.
13 And Judas, being apart with the elders, determined, before the king's host should enter into Judea, and get the city, to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord.	13 Il se retira ensuite avec les anciens et l’on décida de ne pas attendre que l’armée du roi envahisse la Judée et prenne la ville, mais de sortir immédiatement et d’obtenir une décision avec l’aide de Dieu.
14 So when he had committed all to the Creator of the world, and exhorted his soldiers to fight manfully, even unto death, for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the commonwealth, he camped by Modin:	14 Après avoir confié cette décision au Créateur du monde, il encouragea ses compagnons à combattre courageusement jusqu’à la mort, pour les lois, le Temple, la ville, la patrie et les institutions; puis il établit son camp dans les environs de Modine.
15 And having given the watchword to them that were about him, Victory is of God; with the most valiant and choice young men he went in into the king's tent by night, and slew in the camp about four thousand men, and the chiefest of the elephants, with all that were upon him.	15 Il donna comme mot d’ordre à ses hommes: “Victoire de Dieu!” Et de nuit il attaqua la tente du roi avec l’élite des jeunes. Il tua dans le camp environ 2 000 hommes et transperça l’éléphant de tête avec celui qui était dans sa tour.
16 And at last they filled the camp with fear and tumult, and departed with good success.	16 Enfin, il remplit le camp de terreur et de confusion, et tous se retirèrent après un total succès.
17 This was done in the break of the day, because the protection of the Lord did help him.	17 Le jour commençait à peine à se lever que déjà tout était terminé, grâce à la constante protection du Seigneur en faveur de Judas.
18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews, he went about to take the holds by policy,	18 Le roi avait pu mesurer le courage des Juifs. Il essaya donc de prendre les places en manœuvrant.
19 And marched toward Bethsura, which was a strong hold of the Jews: but he was put to flight, failed, and lost of his men:	19 Il marcha contre Beth-Sour qui était une place forte des Juifs, mais il fut repoussé, mis en échec et vaincu.
20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary.	20 Judas faisait passer aux assiégés ce dont ils avaient besoin.
21 But Rhodocus, who was in the Jews' host, disclosed the secrets to the enemies; therefore he was sought out, and when they had gotten him, they put him in prison.	21 Mais Rodocos, de l’armée juive, livrait les secrets aux ennemis; on le rechercha, on l’arrêta et on le fit disparaître.
22 The king treated with them in Bethsum the second time, gave his hand, took their's, departed, fought with Judas, was overcome;	22 Le roi reprit les pourparlers avec les gens de Beth-Sour, il leur tendit la main et accepta la leur, puis il se retira pour attaquer Judas et ses hommes, mais il fut battu.
23 Heard that Philip, who was left over the affairs in Antioch, was desperately bent, confounded, intreated the Jews, submitted himself, and sware to all equal conditions, agreed with them, and offered sacrifice, honoured the temple, and dealt kindly with the place,	23 Il apprit alors que Philippe, qu’il avait laissé à Antioche pour diriger les affaires du royaume, s’était révolté. Il en fut bouleversé. Il fit appeler les Juifs et se soumit: il accepta avec serment toutes leurs conditions. Il se réconcilia avec eux et offrit un sacrifice, il honora le Temple et traita le Lieu Saint avec générosité.
24 And accepted well of Maccabeus, made him principal governor from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians;	24 Il réserva un bon accueil à Maccabée et laissa Hégémonide comme général d’armée depuis Ptolémaïs jusqu’au pays des Géréniens.
25 Came to Ptolemais: the people there were grieved for the covenants; for they stormed, because they would make their covenants void:	25 Il se rendit ensuite à Ptolémaïs, mais les habitants de la ville voyaient ce traité d’un mauvais œil: ils en étaient scandalisés et voulaient en violer les accords.
26 Lysias went up to the judgment seat, said as much as could be in defence of the cause, persuaded, pacified, made them well affected, returned to Antioch. Thus it went touching the king's coming and departing.	26 Alors Lysias monta à la tribune et justifia de son mieux les accords. Il persuada les gens de Ptolémaïs, les calma et les amena à changer d’attitude, puis il partit pour Antioche. C’est ainsi que se déroulèrent l’offensive et la retraite du roi.
