1 About that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countries heard say, that Elymais in the country of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches, silver, and gold;	1 Il re Antioco, mentre percorreva le regioni settentrionali, sentì dire che in Persia vi era Elimaide, città famosa per ricchezza, argento e oro,
2 And that there was in it a very rich temple, wherein were coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields, which Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian king, who reigned first among the Grecians, had left there.	2 e che il suo tempio era molto ricco e che vi si trovavano drappi d'oro, corazze e armi, lasciatevi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, il re macedone che per primo regnò sui Greci.
3 Wherefore he came and sought to take the city, and to spoil it; but he was not able, because they of the city, having had warning thereof,	3 Vi andò, allora, e cercò di occupare la città e di depredarla; ma non vi riuscì perché gli abitanti della città, conosciuto il suo disegno,
4 Rose up against him in battle: so he fled, and departed thence with great heaviness, and returned to Babylon.	4 insorsero contro di lui a mano armata ed egli fuggì, allontanandosi di lì con grande dispiacere per far ritorno in Babilonia.
5 Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia, that the armies, which went against the land of Judea, were put to flight:	5 Mentre era ancora in Persia, giunse poi un tale, il quale gli annunciò che le truppe partite per la terra di Giuda erano state travolte.
6 And that Lysias, who went forth first with a great power was driven away of the Jews; and that they were made strong by the armour, and power, and store of spoils, which they had gotten of the armies, whom they had destroyed:	6 Lisia, in particolare, partito con un forte esercito, vi era stato respinto dagli Israeliti, i quali si erano rinforzati con le armi, i mezzi di guerra e le numerose spoglie tolte alle truppe sopraffatte.
7 Also that they had pulled down the abomination, which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem, and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls, as before, and his city Bethsura.	7 Essi, inoltre, avevano abbattuto l'abominazione che egli aveva eretto sull'altare in Gerusalemme e avevano cinto d'alte mura, come per l'innanzi, il santuario e Bet-Zur, che era una sua città.
8 Now when the king heard these words, he was astonished and sore moved: whereupon he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for.	8 All'udire queste notizie, il re restò spaventato e fortemente agitato; si gettò sul letto e cadde ammalato, per il dispiacere che non si era realizzato ciò che egli desiderava.
9 And there he continued many days: for his grief was ever more and more, and he made account that he should die.	9 Rimase così per molti giorni, mentre una profonda tristezza si rinnovava continuamente in lui. Pensò che stava per morire.
10 Wherefore he called for all his friends, and said unto them, The sleep is gone from mine eyes, and my heart faileth for very care.	10 Perciò chiamò tutti i suoi amici e disse loro: "Il sonno s'è ritirato dai miei occhi e il mio cuore è abbattuto per l'inquietudine.
11 And I thought with myself, Into what tribulation am I come, and how great a flood of misery is it, wherein now I am! for I was bountiful and beloved in my power.	11 Mi sono detto: A quale afflizione sono giunto e in quale grande tempesta mi dibatto! Ero, infatti, felice e amato nella mia potenza.
12 But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem, and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein, and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause.	12 Ora, invece, mi assale il ricordo dei mali che ho fatto a Gerusalemme, quando presi tutti i suoi oggetti d'argento e d'oro e quando inviai a sterminare gli abitanti di Giuda senza motivo.
13 I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me, and, behold, I perish through great grief in a strange land.	13 Riconosco che è a causa di tali cose che questi mali mi hanno raggiunto; ed ecco con profonda tristezza perisco in terra straniera!".
14 Then called he for Philip, one of his friends, who he made ruler over all his realm,	14 Chiamò Filippo, uno dei suoi amici, e lo costituì capo di tutto il suo regno.
15 And gave him the crown, and his robe, and his signet, to the end he should bring up his son Antiochus, and nourish him up for the kingdom.	15 Gli consegnò il diadema, il suo manto e l'anello, l'incaricò di dirigere suo figlio Antioco e di prepararlo al trono.
16 So king Antiochus died there in the hundred forty and ninth year.	16 Poi morì lì, il re Antioco, l'anno 149.
17 Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead, he set up Antiochus his son, whom he had brought up being young, to reign in his stead, and his name he called Eupator.	17 Ma Lisia, appena seppe che il re era morto, proclamò re suo figlio Antioco, ch'egli aveva educato da piccolo, e gli impose il nome di Eupatore.
18 About this time they that were in the tower shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary, and sought always their hurt, and the strengthening of the heathen.	18 Ora quelli dell'Acra bloccavano Israele intorno al santuario, cercando sempre di fargli del male e di sostenere invece i gentili.
19 Wherefore Judas, purposing to destroy them, called all the people together to besiege them.	19 Giuda perciò, avendo deciso di sterminarli, fece convocare tutto il popolo per assediarli.
20 So they came together, and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year, and he made mounts for shot against them, and other engines.	20 Si radunarono, infatti, e l'anno 15 0 posero l'assedio all'Acra, costruendo piattaforme e macchine.
21 Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth, unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joined themselves:	21 Alcuni degli assediati, tuttavia, riuscirono a rompere l'accerchiamento e, unitisi a loro alcuni Israeliti rinnegati,
22 And they went unto the king, and said, How long will it be ere thou execute judgment, and avenge our brethren?	22 andarono dal re e gli dissero: "Fino a quando tarderai a far giustizia e a vendicare i nostri fratelli?
23 We have been willing to serve thy father, and to do as he would have us, and to obey his commandments;	23 Noi accettammo volentieri di servire a tuo padre, di seguire le sue parole e di osservare i suoi decreti.
24 For which cause they of our nation besiege the tower, and are alienated from us: moreover as many of us as they could light on they slew, and spoiled our inheritance.	24 Per questa ragione i figli del nostro popolo si sono alienati da noi. Anzi, quanti di noi vengono scovati sono messi a morte e i nostri campi sono devastati.
25 Neither have they stretched out their hand against us only, but also against their borders.	25 E non è contro di noi soltanto che hanno steso la mano, ma anche contro i loro confinanti.
26 And, behold, this day are they besieging the tower at Jerusalem, to take it: the sanctuary also and Bethsura have they fortified.	26 Ecco, ora stanno accampati intorno all'Acra, in Gerusalemme, per espugnarla, e hanno fortificato il santuario e Bet-Zur.
27 Wherefore if thou dost not prevent them quickly, they will do the greater things than these, neither shalt thou be able to rule them.	27 Se non ti affretti a prevenirli, faranno cose più gravi di queste e tu non potrai più arrestarli".
28 Now when the king heard this, he was angry, and gathered together all his friends, and the captains of his army, and those that had charge of the horse.	28 All'udire ciò, il re si adirò e fece radunare tutti i suoi amici, comandanti dell'esercito e preposti alla cavalleria.
29 There came also unto him from other kingdoms, and from isles of the sea, bands of hired soldiers.	29 Accorsero da lui truppe mercenarie anche da altri regni e dalle isole del mare.
30 So that the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and two and thirty elephants exercised in battle.	30 Il numero delle sue truppe era di centomila fanti, ventimila cavalieri e trentadue elefanti addestrati alla guerra.
31 These went through Idumea, and pitched against Bethsura, which they assaulted many days, making engines of war; but they of Bethsura came out, and burned them with fire, and fought valiantly.	31 Passarono per l'Idumea e posero l'accampamento contro Bet-Zur. Combatterono per molti giorni e si fecero delle macchine. Gli assediati, però, fecero una sortita e le incendiarono, combattendo valorosamente.
32 Upon this Judas removed from the tower, and pitched in Bathzacharias, over against the king's camp.	32 Giuda, allora, partì anch'egli dall'Acra e si accampò presso Bet-Zaccaria, di fronte al campo del re.
33 Then the king rising very early marched fiercely with his host toward Bathzacharias, where his armies made them ready to battle, and sounded the trumpets.	33 Il re, però, si levò di buon mattino e trasferì l'armata, piena d'ardore, sulla strada di Bet-Zaccaria, dove le truppe si disposero al combattimento e suonarono le trombe.
34 And to the end they might provoke the elephants to fight, they shewed them the blood of grapes and mulberries.	34 Per aizzarli al combattimento, misero davanti agli elefanti succo di uva e di more.
35 Moreover they divided the beasts among the armies, and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men, armed with coats of mail, and with helmets of brass on their heads; and beside this, for every beast were ordained five hundred horsemen of the best.	35 Ripartirono poi queste bestie tra le varie falangi e intorno a ciascun elefante disposero mille uomini con corazze a maglia e, sulla testa, elmi di bronzo, mentre cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano disposti intorno a ciascuna bestia.
36 These were ready at every occasion: wheresoever the beast was, and whithersoever the beast went, they went also, neither departed they from him.	36 Costoro in ogni caso stavano là, ovunque era la bestia; l'accompagnavano ovunque andava e mai si allontanavano da essa.
37 And upon the beasts were there strong towers of wood, which covered every one of them, and were girt fast unto them with devices: there were also upon every one two and thirty strong men, that fought upon them, beside the Indian that ruled him.	37 Delle torri di legno, fortemente protette, erano assicurate su ciascuna bestia mediante congegni e in ciascuna torre vi erano quattro uomini armati che combattevano da sopra ad essa, e in più l'indiano.
38 As for the remnant of the horsemen, they set them on this side and that side at the two parts of the host giving them signs what to do, and being harnessed all over amidst the ranks.	38 Quanto al resto della cavalleria, il re la ripartì di qua e di là, ai due lati dell'armata per sconvolgere il nemico e per proteggere le falangi.
39 Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glistered therewith, and shined like lamps of fire.	39 Quando poi il sole rifulse sugli scudi d'oro e di bronzo, le montagne ne furono illuminate e brillarono come lampade di fuoco.
40 So part of the king's army being spread upon the high mountains, and part on the valleys below, they marched on safely and in order.	40 Una parte dell'armata del re si schierò sulle alture della montagna, gli altri invece nella pianura e incominciarono ad avanzare cautamente e ordinatamente.
41 Wherefore all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the rattling of the harness, were moved: for the army was very great and mighty.	41 Restavano tutti scossi quelli che udivano il clamore della loro moltitudine, il calpestio di tanta gente e l'urto delle armi. Era, infatti, un esercito straordinariamente grande e potente.
42 Then Judas and his host drew near, and entered into battle, and there were slain of the king's army six hundred men.	42 Giuda avanzò col suo esercito all'attacco e nell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.
43 Eleazar also, surnamed Savaran, perceiving that one of the beasts, armed with royal harness, was higher than all the rest, and supposing that the king was upon him,	43 Eleàzaro, detto Auaran, vedendo uno degli elefanti bardato con armature regali, e più alto di tutti gli altri, credendo che sopra di esso vi fosse il re,
44 Put himself in jeopardy, to the end he might deliver his people, and get him a perpetual name:	44 diede se stesso per salvare il suo popolo e per acquistarsi un nome eterno.
45 Wherefore he ran upon him courageously through the midst of the battle, slaying on the right hand and on the left, so that they were divided from him on both sides.	45 Corse arditamente verso di esso in mezzo alla falange, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra, sicché i nemici si scindevano davanti a lui da una parte e dall'altra.
46 Which done, he crept under the elephant, and thrust him under, and slew him: whereupon the elephant fell down upon him, and there he died.	46 Cacciatosi sotto l'elefante, lo colpì di sotto e l'uccise. La bestia però cadde a terra sopra di lui ed ivi egli morì.
47 Howbeit the rest of the Jews seeing the strength of the king, and the violence of his forces, turned away from them.	47 I Giudei tuttavia, vedendo la forza del re e lo slancio delle sue truppe, ripiegarono davanti ad esse.
48 Then the king's army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king pitched his tents against Judea, and against mount Sion.	48 Gli uomini dell'armata del re, allora, salirono contro di essi alla volta di Gerusalemme e il re fece porre il campo contro la Giudea e contro il monte Sion,
49 But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace: for they came out of the city, because they had no victuals there to endure the siege, it being a year of rest to the land.	49 mentre egli trattò la pace con quelli che erano a Bet-Zur, i quali uscirono dalla città perché non avevano più viveri per sostenervi un assedio, essendo la terra in riposo.
50 So the king took Bethsura, and set a garrison there to keep it.	50 Così il re, presa Bet-Zur e postovi un presidio per custodirla,
51 As for the sanctuary, he besieged it many days: and set there artillery with engines and instruments to cast fire and stones, and pieces to cast darts and slings.	51 tenne assediato per molti giorni il santuario, erigendovi piattaforme, macchine, lanciafiamme, baliste e scorpioni per scagliare frecce e proiettili.
52 Whereupon they also made engines against their engines, and held them battle a long season.	52 Anche i Giudei però costruirono macchine contro le loro macchine e combatterono per molti giorni.
53 Yet at the last, their vessels being without victuals, (for that it was the seventh year, and they in Judea that were delivered from the Gentiles, had eaten up the residue of the store;)	53 Non essendovi, tuttavia, più viveri nei depositi, perché quello era l'anno sabbatico e perché coloro che da mezzo ai gentili avevano trovato scampo in Giudea avevano consumato il resto delle provviste,
54 There were but a few left in the sanctuary, because the famine did so prevail against them, that they were fain to disperse themselves, every man to his own place.	54 furono lasciati nel santuario soltanto pochi uomini, e gli altri, presi dalla fame, si dispersero ciascuno al suo paese.
55 At that time Lysias heard say, that Philip, whom Antiochus the king, whiles he lived, had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus, that he might be king,	55 Frattanto Lisia venne a sapere che Filippo, incaricato dal re Antioco, ancora vivente, di educare suo figlio Antioco per prepararlo al trono,
56 Was returned out of Persia and Media, and the king's host also that went with him, and that he sought to take unto him the ruling of the affairs.	56 era ritornato dalla Persia e dalla Media con le truppe che avevano accompagnato il re e cercava di impadronirsi del potere.
57 Wherefore he went in all haste, and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company, We decay daily, and our victuals are but small, and the place we lay siege unto is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us:	57 Allora si affrettò a far cenno di voler partire, dicendo al re, ai comandanti dell'esercito e agli uomini: "Noi diminuiamo di giorno in giorno, il cibo è poco e il luogo che teniamo assediato è fortificato, mentre le cure del regno incombono sopra di noi.
58 Now therefore let us be friends with these men, and make peace with them, and with all their nation;	58 Ora, perciò, offriamo la destra a questi uomini e facciamo la pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.
59 And covenant with them, that they shall live after their laws, as they did before: for they are therefore displeased, and have done all these things, because we abolished their laws.	59 Concediamo loro di poter vivere secondo le loro leggi come per l'innanzi, perché è a causa delle loro leggi che noi abbiamo abolito che essi si sono irritati e hanno fatto tutte queste cose".
60 So the king and the princes were content: wherefore he sent unto them to make peace; and they accepted thereof.	60 Il suo discorso piacque al re e ai prìncipi. Si mandò perciò a trattare la pace con i Giudei e questi accettarono.
61 Also the king and the princes made an oath unto them: whereupon they went out of the strong hold.	61 Il re e i prìncipi giurarono davanti a loro ed essi, a tali patti, uscirono dalla fortezza.
62 Then the king entered into mount Sion; but when he saw the strength of the place, he broke his oath that he had made, and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about.	62 Però il re, entrato nel monte Sion e visto il luogo fortificato, ruppe il giuramento che aveva fatto e comandò di abbattere il muro all'intorno.
63 Afterward departed he in all haste, and returned unto Antiochia, where he found Philip to be master of the city: so he fought against him, and took the city by force.	63 Quindi partì in fretta e fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città. Combatté contro di lui e con la forza occupò la città.
