KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA RICCIOTTI
About that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countries heard say, that Elymais in the country of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches, silver, and gold;1 - Ora il re Antioco, percorrendo le regioni superiori, seppe esservi in Persia una città nobilissima, Elimalde, ricca d'argento e d'oro;
And that there was in it a very rich temple, wherein were coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields, which Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian king, who reigned first among the Grecians, had left there.2 ed in quella un tempio ricchissimo con arnesi d'oro, corazze e scudi lasciativi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, re macedone, che regnò pel primo in Grecia.
Wherefore he came and sought to take the city, and to spoil it; but he was not able, because they of the city, having had warning thereof,3 Venne dunque e cercava di prendere la città e depredarla ; ma non potè, perchè la cosa fu risaputa da quelli che erano nella città
Rose up against him in battle: so he fled, and departed thence with great heaviness, and returned to Babylon.4 ed Insorsero e combatterono; ed il re fuggi di lì, e con gran tristezza se n'andò, per tornare In Babilonia.
Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia, that the armies, which went against the land of Judea, were put to flight:5 Ed ecco venirgli in Persia l'annunzio che era stato messo in fuga il suo esercito nella terra di Giuda ;
And that Lysias, who went forth first with a great power was driven away of the Jews; and that they were made strong by the armour, and power, and store of spoils, which they had gotten of the armies, whom they had destroyed:6 che primieramente Lisia s'era avanzato con grandi forze, ma era stato ributtato da'Giudei; che questi s'erano ingranditi con le armi e gli uomini e le spoglie copiose prese nel campo degli sconfitti;
Also that they had pulled down the abomination, which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem, and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls, as before, and his city Bethsura.7 che avevano rovesciata l'abominazione da lui collocata sull'altare di Gerusalemme, e circondato di alte mura come prima il luogo santo, e perfino anche la sua città Betsura.
Now when the king heard these words, he was astonished and sore moved: whereupon he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for.8 Quando dunque il re seppe queste cose, si turbò, ne fu grandemente scosso, ai mise a letto, e cadde in languore per la tristezza che le cose non erano accadute come egli aveva pensato.
And there he continued many days: for his grief was ever more and more, and he made account that he should die.9 E vi stette molto tempo, crechè la sua malinconia andava crescendo, e credè di morire.
Wherefore he called for all his friends, and said unto them, The sleep is gone from mine eyes, and my heart faileth for very care.10 Chiamò dunque tutti i suoi amici, e disse loro: « Il sonno se n'è andato dagli occhi miei, sono abbattuto d'animo e sgomento per l'amarezza,
And I thought with myself, Into what tribulation am I come, and how great a flood of misery is it, wherein now I am! for I was bountiful and beloved in my power.11 e dico a me stesso: - In quanta tribolazione son venuto, ed in quali onde di tristezza ora mi trovo, io che ero così lieto e riverito nella mia potenza ;
But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem, and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein, and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause.12 ora ripenso ai mali da me fatti in Gerusalemme, da dove portai via tutte le ricchezze d'oro e d'argento che v'erano e feci senza motivo disperdere gli abitanti della Giudea.
I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me, and, behold, I perish through great grief in a strange land.13 Riconosco dunque che a causa di ciò mi sono sopraggiunti questi mali, ed ora muoio di tristezza grande In terra straniera - ».
Then called he for Philip, one of his friends, who he made ruler over all his realm,14 E chiamò Filippo, uno de' suoi amici, e lo pose a capo di tutto il suo regno,
And gave him the crown, and his robe, and his signet, to the end he should bring up his son Antiochus, and nourish him up for the kingdom.15 consegnandogli il diadema, il manto e l'anello, acciò prendesse con sè il figlio suo Antioco, e lo educasse per poi farlo re.
So king Antiochus died there in the hundred forty and ninth year.16 Ed ivi Antioco morì, l'anno centoquarantanove.
Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead, he set up Antiochus his son, whom he had brought up being young, to reign in his stead, and his name he called Eupator.17 Quando Lisia seppe che il re era morto, volle che regnasse il figlio di lui, Antioco, giovinetto, che egli aveva educato e gli mise nome Eupatore.
About this time they that were in the tower shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary, and sought always their hurt, and the strengthening of the heathen.18 Or quelli che erano nella rocca [di Gerusalemme] vessavano gli Israeliti nei pressi del tempio, cercando sempre di nuocere a loro, e di avvantaggiare i Gentili.
Wherefore Judas, purposing to destroy them, called all the people together to besiege them.19 Per questo, Giuda voleva disperderli, e radunò tutte le sue forze per espugnarli.
So they came together, and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year, and he made mounts for shot against them, and other engines.20 Si riunirono dunque, e vi misero l'assedio, l'anno centocinquanta, e fecero baliste e macchine.
Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth, unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joined themselves:21 Ma alcuni degli assediati, a' quali soggiunsero alcuni empii d'Israele, uscirono,
And they went unto the king, and said, How long will it be ere thou execute judgment, and avenge our brethren?22 andarono al re, e gli dissero: < Inaino a quando lasceral di far giustizia, e di vendicare i nostri fratelli?
We have been willing to serve thy father, and to do as he would have us, and to obey his commandments;23 Noi abbiamo voluto servire il padre tuo, fare secondo i suoi ordini, ed obbedire a' suoi editti ;
For which cause they of our nation besiege the tower, and are alienated from us: moreover as many of us as they could light on they slew, and spoiled our inheritance.24 per questo, i nostri concittadini s'alienarono da noi; quanti di noi ne trovavano, tanti n'uccidevano, e confiscavano i nostri beni.
Neither have they stretched out their hand against us only, but also against their borders.25 Nè su noi soli ha messo le mani, ma anche in tutto il nostro territorio;
And, behold, this day are they besieging the tower at Jerusalem, to take it: the sanctuary also and Bethsura have they fortified.26 ora hanno circondato la rocca di Gerusalemme per impadronirsene, hanno fortificato la fortezza di Betsura,
Wherefore if thou dost not prevent them quickly, they will do the greater things than these, neither shalt thou be able to rule them.27 e se non li preverrai senza indugio, faranno cose anche più grandi, e non potrai più trattenerli ».
Now when the king heard this, he was angry, and gathered together all his friends, and the captains of his army, and those that had charge of the horse.28 Ciò udito, il re s’adirò, e convocò tutti i suoi amici, i capi del suo esercito, ed i preposti alla cavalleria ;
There came also unto him from other kingdoms, and from isles of the sea, bands of hired soldiers.29 ed anche da altri regni e dalle isole marittime gli vennero milizie assoldate.
So that the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and two and thirty elephants exercised in battle.30 L’esercito suo era di centomila pedoni, ventimila cavalieri, e trentadue elefanti ammaestrati alla guerra.
These went through Idumea, and pitched against Bethsura, which they assaulted many days, making engines of war; but they of Bethsura came out, and burned them with fire, and fought valiantly.31 Vennero dunque per l’Idumea, ed assediarono Betsura, combattendo per molti giorni, fecero anche delle macchine, ma quei di dentro uscirono, e le incendiarono, e si difesero valorosamente.
Upon this Judas removed from the tower, and pitched in Bathzacharias, over against the king's camp.32 Allora Giuda lasciò da parte la rocca, e mosse il campo per Betzacara, contro il campo del re.
Then the king rising very early marched fiercely with his host toward Bathzacharias, where his armies made them ready to battle, and sounded the trumpets.33 Ed il re si mosse avanti giorno, spinse con impeto le sue schiere per la via di Betzacara, e queste si apparecchiarono alla battaglia, e sonaron le trombe.
And to the end they might provoke the elephants to fight, they shewed them the blood of grapes and mulberries.34 Fecero bere agli elefanti del succo d’uva e di more per eccitarli a battaglia,
Moreover they divided the beasts among the armies, and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men, armed with coats of mail, and with helmets of brass on their heads; and beside this, for every beast were ordained five hundred horsemen of the best.35 e li spartirono fra le legioni; stavano intorno a ciascun elefante mille uomini con corazze di maglia e con elmi di bronzo in capo; cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano inoltre distribuiti attorno ad ogni animale,
These were ready at every occasion: wheresoever the beast was, and whithersoever the beast went, they went also, neither departed they from him.36 già da tempo avvezzati a stare dovunque era l'elefante, andare dovunque esso andava, e non lasciarlo mai.
And upon the beasts were there strong towers of wood, which covered every one of them, and were girt fast unto them with devices: there were also upon every one two and thirty strong men, that fought upon them, beside the Indian that ruled him.37 Portavano poi, gli elefanti, sul dorso, delle forti torri di legno, a difesa, e sulle torri, macchine di guerra; ed in ciascuna torre trentadue uomini di valore, che di lì combattevano, ed un indiano per guidare la bestia.
As for the remnant of the horsemen, they set them on this side and that side at the two parts of the host giving them signs what to do, and being harnessed all over amidst the ranks.38 Il resto della cavalleria fu posto di qua e di là, in due ali, per eccitare con le trombe l'esercito e mantenere serrate le file dei fanti.
Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glistered therewith, and shined like lamps of fire.39 Ora quando il sole rifulse sugli elmi d’oro e di bronzo, i monti ne risplenderono, come illuminati da lampade accese.
So part of the king's army being spread upon the high mountains, and part on the valleys below, they marched on safely and in order.40 Una parte dell’esercito regio s’avviò per le alture de' monti, un'altra per la pianura, procedendo cauti ed ordinati.
Wherefore all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the rattling of the harness, were moved: for the army was very great and mighty.41 Gli abitanti di que’ luoghi restavano attoniti allo strepito della moltitudine, al passo di tanta gente, al cozzo delle armi; era infatti un esercito di gran numero e forza.
Then Judas and his host drew near, and entered into battle, and there were slain of the king's army six hundred men.42 Giuda dunque ed i suol vennero avanti in battaglia, e dell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.
Eleazar also, surnamed Savaran, perceiving that one of the beasts, armed with royal harness, was higher than all the rest, and supposing that the king was upon him,43 Eleazaro figlio di Saura vide un elefante armato di regia armatura che sopravanzava tutti gli altri, e giudicò che il re vi fosse sopra;
Put himself in jeopardy, to the end he might deliver his people, and get him a perpetual name:44 allora volle sacrificarsi per liberare il suo popolo ed acquistarsi un nome immortale.
Wherefore he ran upon him courageously through the midst of the battle, slaying on the right hand and on the left, so that they were divided from him on both sides.45 Corse audacemente verso di quello, passando in mezzo alla legione, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra; cadevano quelli di qua e di là,
Which done, he crept under the elephant, and thrust him under, and slew him: whereupon the elephant fell down upon him, and there he died.46 ed egli arrivò tra i piedi dell'elefante, e gli si mise sotto, e l'uccise, e questo cadendogli addosso ve lo schiacciò.
Howbeit the rest of the Jews seeing the strength of the king, and the violence of his forces, turned away from them.47 Ma vedendo [i Giudei] le forze del re, e l'impeto del suo esercito, si ritirarono.
Then the king's army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king pitched his tents against Judea, and against mount Sion.48 Le schiere del re salirono verso Gerusalemme e posero il campo in Giudea e contro il monte Sion.
But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace: for they came out of the city, because they had no victuals there to endure the siege, it being a year of rest to the land.49 Concluse la pace con quelli che erano in Betsura, ed essi uscirono dalla città, perchè dentro non vi eran più viveri, essendo quello per la terra un anno sabatico.
So the king took Bethsura, and set a garrison there to keep it.50 Il re dunque s'impadronì di Betsura, e vi pose a guardia un presidio.
As for the sanctuary, he besieged it many days: and set there artillery with engines and instruments to cast fire and stones, and pieces to cast darts and slings.51 Poi andò ad accamparsi di contro al luogo santo, per molti giorni, piantandovi baliste, macchine, attrezzi per lanciar fuoco, arnesi per scagliar pietre e dardi, scorpioni per lanciar frecce, e fionde.
Whereupon they also made engines against their engines, and held them battle a long season.52 Ma anche i Giudei opposero macchine a macchine, e si difesero a lungo.
Yet at the last, their vessels being without victuals, (for that it was the seventh year, and they in Judea that were delivered from the Gentiles, had eaten up the residue of the store;)53 Non v’erano però viveri nella città, perchè era Panno sabatico, ed i Gentili rimasti in Giudea avevano consumato gli avanzi messi da parte;
There were but a few left in the sanctuary, because the famine did so prevail against them, that they were fain to disperse themselves, every man to his own place.54 perciò non rimasero nel luogo santo che pochi uomini, la fame avendoli colpiti, ed essendosi dispersi ciascuno pel proprio paese.
At that time Lysias heard say, that Philip, whom Antiochus the king, whiles he lived, had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus, that he might be king,55 E Lisia seppe che Filippo, scelto dal re Antioco, prima di morire, a tutore del figlio suo Antioco sinché questi regnasse,
Was returned out of Persia and Media, and the king's host also that went with him, and that he sought to take unto him the ruling of the affairs.56 era tornato dallo Persia e dalla Media conducendo seco un esercito, ed aspirava a prender egli il governo del regno.
Wherefore he went in all haste, and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company, We decay daily, and our victuals are but small, and the place we lay siege unto is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us:57 S'affrettò allora ad andar a dire al re ed ai capi delPesercito: « Ogni giorno scemiamo di numero, abbiam pochi viveri, il luogo che assediamo è ben difeso, e dobbiamo provvedere al buon ordine del regno.
Now therefore let us be friends with these men, and make peace with them, and with all their nation;58 Ora dunque diamo la mano a questa gente, e facciamo pace con loro e con tutta la loro nazione;
And covenant with them, that they shall live after their laws, as they did before: for they are therefore displeased, and have done all these things, because we abolished their laws.59 stabiliamo con loro che si regolino secondo le loro leggi, come prima ; giacché essi si son adirati con noi, ed han fatto tutte queste cose, per amore delle loro leggi che noi avevamo disprezzate ».
So the king and the princes were content: wherefore he sent unto them to make peace; and they accepted thereof.60 Piacque la proposta al re ed ai principi, e mandarono ai Giudei per far pace, ed essi l'accettarono;
Also the king and the princes made an oath unto them: whereupon they went out of the strong hold.61 il re ed i principi la giurarono, e quelli uscirono dalla cittadella.
Then the king entered into mount Sion; but when he saw the strength of the place, he broke his oath that he had made, and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about.62 Ed il re entrò sul monte Sion, e vide le sue fortificazioni, e subito ruppe il giuramento da lui dato, e fece atterrare il muro che lo contornava.
Afterward departed he in all haste, and returned unto Antiochia, where he found Philip to be master of the city: so he fought against him, and took the city by force.63 Dipoi si partì frettolosamente, tornò in Antiochia, e trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città; combattè contro di lui, ed occupò egli la città.
