1 Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;	1 Gorgia, presi seco cinquemila fanti e mille cavalieri scelti, si mosse di notte,
2 To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.	2 per avvicinarsi al campo dei Giudei, assalirli all'improvviso, mentre quelli della fortezza facevano loro da guida.
3 Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king's army which was at Emmaus,	3 Ma Giuda, appena lo seppe, si mosse coi più valorosi, per assalire il grosso dell'esercito del re, che era in Einmaus,
4 While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.	4 giacché tal esercito era ancora sparpagliato fuori degli alloggiamenti.
5 In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us	5 Gorgia, giunto di notte agli accampamenti di Giuda o non trovandoci nessuno, li andò a cercare per i monti, dicendo: « Ci fuggono ».
6 But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.	6 Ma, fattosi giorno, Giuda comparve nella pianura con tre mila fanti, soli e privi di scudo e di spada.
7 And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.	7 Essi stavano a guardare il formidabile accampamento delle genti, circondato di corazzieri e di cavalieri addestrati alla battaglia;
8 Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.	8 ma Giuda disse ai suoi: « non vi spaventi il loro numero, non abbiate paura del loro attacco.
9 Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.	9 Ricordate come i nostri padri furon salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando Faraone l'inseguiva con grande esercito.
10 Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:	10 Or dunque alziamo la voce al cielo, e il Signore avrà pietà di noi, e, ricordandosi dell'alleanza fatta coi padri nostri, oggi distruggerà dinanzi a noi quest'esercito,
11 That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.	11 e tutte le genti conosceranno che vi è un Salvatore che libera Israele ».
12 Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.	12 Gli stranieri, alzati gli occhi, e veduti i Giudei che andavano verso di loro,
13 Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.	13 usciron fuori dagli accampamenti, per combattere, mentre quelli che eran con Giuda davan fiato alle trombe.
14 So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.	14 Appiccatasi la battaglia, le genti furon messe in rotta e fuggirono per le campagne;
15 Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.	15 però gli ultimi restarono sotto la spada, essendo inseguiti fino a Gezeron, fino alle campagne d'Idumea, d'Azoto e di Iamnia: ne morirono circa tre mila.
16 This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,	16 Ma Giuda tornò indietro coll'esercito cho lo seguiva,
17 And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,	17 e disse alla sua gente: « Non vi fermate per la preda, perchè la guerra non è finita,
18 And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.	18 e Gorgia col suo esercito è nella montagna vicino a noi: orsù a combattere contro i nostri nemici, a vincerli, o dopo tranquillamente alla preda ».
19 As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:	19 Giuda parlava ancora, quand'ecco apparire una divisione che scendeva del monte.
20 Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:	20 Allora Gorgia s'accorse che i suoi erano stati messi in fuga e che n'erano stati incendiati gli accampamenti, perchè il fumo che si vedeva manifestava quanto era accaduto.
21 When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,	21 A tal vista i suoi furono presi dallo spavento; mirando poi come Giuda stesse nella pianura col suo esercito pronto alla battaglia,
22 They fled every one into the land of strangers.	22 fuggiron tutti nel paese degli stranieri.
23 Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.	23 Allora Giuda tornò a saccheggiare gli accampamenti, dove presero molto oro, argento, giacinto, porpora di mare e grandi ricchezze.
24 After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.	24 Ritornando cantavano l'inno, benedicendo ad alta voce Dio, « perchè è buono, perchè la sua misericordia è eterna ».
25 Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.	25 In quel giorno Israele ebbe una grande vittoria liberatrice.
26 Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:	26 Or tutti gli stranieri scampati andarono a raccontare a Lisia quanto era accaduto.
27 Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.	27 A queste notizie egli restò coster­nato e abbattuto, perchè non era avvenuto a Israele secondo i suoi desideri e gli ordini del re.
28 The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.	28 L'anno seguente, Lisia mise insieme un esercito di sessanta mila uomini scelti e di cinque mila cavalieri per debellare i Giudei.
29 So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.	29 Entrati in Giudea, s'accamparono vicino a Botoron. Giuda andò loro incontro con dieci mila uomini.
30 And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;	30 Alla vista di esercito sì formidavile pregò e disse: «Tu sei benedetto, o Salvatore d'Israele, che abbattesti la forza d'un gigante per mezzo di David tuo servo, e desti in potere di Gionata, figlio di Saul, e del suo scudiere gli accampamenti degli stranieri;
31 Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:	31 or dà quest'esercito in potere del tuo popolo d'Israele, e il numero delle loro schiere o dei cavalieri ridondi a loro confusione.
32 Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:	32 Fa piombare su di loro lo spavento, togli loro l'ardire e la forza, e siano travolti nella loro rovina.
33 Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.	33 Atterrali colla spada di coloro che ti amano, in modo che ti cantino inni di lode tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome.
34 So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.	34 Attaccata la battaglia, dell'esercito di Lisia perirono cinque mila uomini.
35 Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas' soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.	35 Lisia, veduta la fuga dei suoi e l'ardire dei Giudei, e come eran disposti a vivere e a morire da forti, se ne tornò ad Antiochia, a radunar soldati, per tornare di nuovo nella Giudea con forze maggiori.
36 Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.	36 Allora Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: « Or che i nostri nemici sono sbaragliati, andiamo a parificare o a riconsacrare il tempio.
37 Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.	37 Radunato tutto l'esercito, salirono al monto di Sion.
38 And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down;	38 Vedendo il santuario deserto, l'altare profanato, le porte bruciate, i virgulti cresciuti nei cortili come in un bosco e per i monti, o gli appartamenti rovinati,
39 They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,	39 si stracciarono le vesti, fecero gran lutto, si gettarono la cenere sopra la testa,
40 And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.	40 si prostrarono bocconi per terra, diedero fiato alle trombe dei segnali, e alzarono la voce al cielo.
41 Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.	41 Giuda ordinò a una porte delle truppe di combatterò contro quelli che erano nella fortezza, finché non fosse purificato il santuario;
42 So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:	42 poi elesse dei sacerdoti senza macchia, attaccati alla legge di Dio.
43 Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.	43 Questi purificarono il santuario e portarono in luogo profano le pietre contaminate.
44 And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;	44 Tenuto consiglio sul da farsi riguardo all'altare degli olocausti che era stato profanato,
45 They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,	45 ebbero la felice idea di distruggerlo, affinchè loro non fosse d'obbrobrio, avendolo le genti contaminato; e lo demolirono.
46 And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.	46 Ammassatene le pietre sul monte del tempio, in luogo conveniente, finché non fosse venuto un profeta a decidere il da farsi,
47 Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;	47 presero delle pietre gregge, secondo la legge, ed eressero un nuovo altare simile a quello di prima.
48 And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.	48 Restaurato il santuario e quello che era nell'interno della casa, santificarono la casa e l'atrio,
49 They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.	49 fecero din nuovi vasi sacri, portarono nel tempio il candelabro, l'altare degli incensi e la mensa.
50 And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.	50 Fecero fumar l'incenso sopra l'altare, accesero le lucerne del candelabro, e illuminarono il tempio.
51 Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.	51 Posero i pani sopra la mensa, attaccarono i veli. Compite tutte le cose che avevan prese a fare,
52 Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,	52 levatisi di gran mattino, ai venticinque del nono mese (cioè del mese di Casleu) dell'anno centoquarantotto,
53 And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.	53 offersero il sacrifizio, secondo la legge, sopra l'altare degli olocausti da essi di nuovo eretto.
54 Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.	54 Questo fu dedicato al suono dei cantici, delle cetre, delle lire, dei cembali, nello stesso mese e giorno in cui era stato profanato dalle nazioni.
55 Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.	55 Tutto il popolo si prostrò bocconi per terra, e adorarono e benedissero fino al cielo colui che aveva loro data tale felicità.
56 And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.	56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, offrendo olocausti con gioia e sacrifizi di ringraziamento e di lode.
57 They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.	57 Adornarono la facciata del tempio di corone d'oro e di scudi, e dedicarono le porte e gli appartamenti ai quali misero le porte.
58 Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.	58 Il popolo fu in grandissima gioia, e scosse l'obbrobrio delle nazioni.
59 Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.	59 Giuda coi suoi fratelli e con tutta l'assemblea di Israele ordinò che si celebrasse il giorno della dedicazione dell'altare nel tempo stabilito, d'anno in anno, per otto giorni, da cominciarsi il venticinque di Casleu, con festa e gioia.
60 At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.	60 In quel tempo fortificarono il monte Sion, cingendolo all'intorno di alte muraglie e di forti torri, affinchè le genti non potessero venire a conculcarlo, come avevan fatto per l'addietro.
61 And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.	61 (Giuda) vi pose un corpo di guardia, e lo fortificò per sicurezza di Betsura, affinchè il popolo avesse questa fortezza in faccia all'Idumea.
