1 Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;	1 Ma Gorgia prese seco cinque mila fonti e mille cavalli scelti, e si mosse di notte tempo,
2 To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.	2 Per avvicinarsi al campo de' Giudei, e assalirgli all'improvviso: e quelli della fortezza gli facevano da guide.
3 Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king's army which was at Emmaus,	3 Ma Giuda n' ebbe vento, e si mosse egli coi più valorosi per assalire il grosso dell'esercito del re, che era in Emmaum.
4 While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.	4 Perocchè quell' esercito era tuttavia sparpagliato fuori degli alloggiamenti.
5 In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us	5 E Gorgia giunse di notte agli alloggiamenti di Giuda, e non vi trovò anima, egli andava cercando per la montagna, dicendo. Costoro ci fuggono.
6 But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.	6 Ma fattosi giorno comparve Giuda nella pianura con soli tre mila fanti, che non aveano scudo, ne spada:
7 And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.	7 E videro il forte campo delle genti, e attorno ad esso il corazzieri e soldati a cavallo ben esercitati nel mestiero dell'armi.
8 Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.	8 E Giuda disse a quelli, che eran con lui: Non abbiate paura del loro numero, e non ne temete l'incontro.
9 Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.	9 Ricordatevi in qual modo furon salvati i padri nostri al mar rosso, mentre il faraone gl'inseguiva con grande esercito.
10 Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:	10 E ora alziamo le voci al cielo, e il Signore avrà pietà di noi, e si ricorderà dell'alleanza fatta co' padri nostri, e distruggerà oggi dinanzi a noi quest'esercito:
11 That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.	11 E le genti tutte conosceranno, come havvi un Salvatore e un liberatore per Israele.
12 Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.	12 Ma gli stranieri alzarono gli occhi, e videro i Giudei, che andavano verso di loro:
13 Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.	13 E usciron fuori del campo per combattere; ma quelli che eran con Giuda diedero fiato alla tromba,
14 So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.	14 E vennero alle mani, e le genti furono messe in rotta e fuggiron per la campagna.
15 Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.	15 Ma gli ultimi periron tutti di spada, e (i vincitori) gl'inseguirono fino a Gezeron, e sino alle campagne dell'Idumea e di Azoto e di Jamnia e ne restarono morti sino a tre mila uomini.
16 This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,	16 E Giuda tornò indietro coll'esercito, che lo seguiva;
17 And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,	17 E disse alla gente: Non vi venga voglia di bottinare, perocche' la guerra non è finita,
18 And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.	18 E Gorgia e il suo esercito sono nella montagna vicino a noi; ora adunque state su contro i nostri nemici, e vinceteli, e poi raccorrete quietamente le spoglie.
19 As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:	19 Mentre queste cose diceva Giuda, eccoli apparire una parte delle schiere, che riguardavan dal monte.
20 Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:	20 E Gorgia riconobbe, come i suoi erano stati messi in fuga, ed era stato messo il fuoco agli alloggiamenti; perocché il fumo, che si vedeva, manifestava quello che era avvenuto.
21 When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,	21 Le quali cose veggendn quelli si intimidirono, mirando insieme anche Giuda coll'esercito nella pianura in ordine per la battaglia.
22 They fled every one into the land of strangers.	22 E tutti fuggirono alle campagne degli stranieri:
23 Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.	23 E Giuda tornò a spogliare il campo, dove messero insieme molto oro e argento e giacinto e porpora di mare e grandi ricchezze.
24 After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.	24 E dando volta indietro cantavano un inno benedicendo ad alla voce Iddio, perché egli è buono, perché la misericordia di lui e' eterna.
25 Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.	25 E grande fu la vittoria, che salvò Israele in quel giorno.
26 Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:	26 Or tutti quegli stranieri, che ebbero scampo andarono a dare le nuove a Lisia di quel che era accaduto.
27 Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.	27 Lo che udendo quegli, sbigottito era fuori di se, perché non era stato d'Israele quello che egli bramava, e quello che il re avea comandato.
28 The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.	28 E l'anno seguente Lisia raunò sessanta mila uomini scelti, e cinque mila cavalli per debellare i Giudei.
29 So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.	29 Ed entrarono nella Giudea, e posero il campo vicino a Bethoron e Giuda andò loro incontro con dieci mila uomini.
30 And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;	30 E videro un forte esercito, e (Giuda) orò, e disse: Benedetto se' tu, o Salvatore d'Israele che abbattesti la forza di un gigante per mano di Davidde tuo servo, e desti il campo degli stranieri in potere di Gionata figliuolo di Saul e del suo scudiere.
31 Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:	31 Rinserra questo esercito sotto il potere del popol tuo d'Israele, e sia la lor confusione il numero delle loro schiere e la loro cavalleria.
32 Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:	32 Infondi in loro la paura, e struggi in essi l'ardire e il valore; e colle proprie loro forze si distruggono.
33 Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.	33 Atterrali tu sotto la spada di color, che ti amano, e laude e inni cantino a te tutti quelli che conoscono il nome tuo.
34 So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.	34 E attaccata la zuffa perirono dell'esercito di Lisia cinque mila uomini.
35 Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas' soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.	35 Ma Lisia veduta la fuga de'suoi e l'ardir de' Giudei, e come erano disposti a vivere e morire da forti, se n'andò ad Antiochia, e fece leva di soldati scelti per tornar di nuovo nella Giudea con maggiori forze.
36 Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.	36 Ma Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: Or che i nostri nemici sono per terra andiamo a purificare e ristorare il santuario.
37 Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.	37 E raunata tutto l'esercito, salirono al monte di Sion.
38 And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down;	38 E videro deserto il luogo santo, profanato l'altare, e bruciate le porte, e nei cortili spuntare i virgulti come in un bosco, o sopra un monte, e rovinati gli appartamenti.
39 They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,	39 E si stracciarono le vesti, e fecero gran lutto, e si gettaron la cenere sopra la testa.
40 And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.	40 E si prostraron boccone per terra, e dieder fiato alle trombe, colle quali davansi i segnali, e alzaron le strida al cielo.
41 Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.	41 Allora Giuda messe in ordine un numero di soldati, che combattessero contro quelli che eran nella fortezza, nel tempo che si andava purificando il santuario.
42 So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:	42 Ed elesse de' sacerdoti senza macchia amanti della legge di Dio.
43 Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.	43 E questi purificarono il santuario, e portaron le pietre contaminate in luogo profano.
44 And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;	44 E (Giuda) tenne consulta sopra quel che avesse da farsi dell'altare degli olocausti, che era stato profanato.
45 They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,	45 E presero il partito migliore di distruggerlo, perché non fosse per essi di scorno, avendolo contaminato le genti; e lo demolirono.
46 And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.	46 E ne riposero le pietre sul monte del tempio in luogo conveniente, per sino a tante che venisse un profeta, e decidesse quel che se n' avesse da fare.
47 Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;	47 E presero delle pietre intiere secondo la legge, ed eressero un altare nuovo simile a quel di prima:
48 And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.	48 E riedificarono il Santuario, e quel che era nell'interior della casa, e santificarono la casa e l'atrio.
49 They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.	49 E fecer nuovi i vasi santi, e portarono nel tempio il candelabro e l'altare degli incensi e la mensa.
50 And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.	50 E gettaron l'incenso sopra l'altare, e accesero le lucerne, che erano attorno al candelabro, le quali rischiaravano il tempio.
51 Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.	51 E posero i pani sopra la mensa, e attaccarono i veli, e ridussero a perfezione tutta l'opera incominciata.
52 Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,	52 E prima del far del giorno si alzarono ai venticinque del nono mese (vale a dire del mese Casleu) dell'anno cento quarant'otto:
53 And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.	53 E offersero il sacrifizio secondo la legge sopra l'altare degli olocausti fatto da essi di nuovo.
54 Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.	54 Egli fu dedicato di bel nuovo al suono dei cantici e delle cetere e delle lire e dei cimbali nel tempo stesso, e nello stesso giorno, in cui era stato profanato dalle nazioni.
55 Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.	55 E tutto il popolo si prostrò boccone per terra, e adorarono, e benedissero sino al cielo colui, che avea dato loro quella felicità.
56 And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.	56 E celebraron la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, e offerirono olocausti con gaudio, e il sacrifizio di rendimento di grazie e di lode.
57 They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.	57 E adornarono la facciata del tempio di corone d'oro e di scudi, e dedicarono le porte e gli appartamenti, e ci messero le porte.
58 Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.	58 E stragrande fu l'allegrezza del popolo, e scossero da se l'obbrobrio delle nazioni.
59 Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.	59 E Giuda e i suoi fratelli e tutta la Chiesa d'Israele ordinò, che si celebrasse il giorno della consacrazione dell'altare nel tempo fisso, di anno in anno per otto giorni (che principiano dal di venticinque del mese di Casleu) con festa e gaudio.
60 At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.	60 In quel tempo ancora fortificarono il monte di sion, e fecer all'intorno muraglia alte, e forti torri, affinché non venissero le genti a conculcarlo, come avean fatto prima.
61 And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.	61 E vi pose un corpo di soldati di guardia, e le fortificò per sicurezza di Bethsura, affinché il popolo avesse questo luogo forte in faccia all'Idumea.
