1 And in the eighteenth year, the two and twentieth day of the first month, there was talk in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should, as he said, avenge himself on all the earth.	1 Nell'anno decimottavo, il giorno ventidue del primo mese, nel palazzo di Nabucodònosor re degli Assiri, fu discusso un piano di vendetta contro tutta la terra, come aveva annunziato.
2 So he called unto him all his officers, and all his nobles, and communicated with them his secret counsel, and concluded the afflicting of the whole earth out of his own mouth.	2 Radunò tutti i suoi ministri e i suoi dignitari, tenne con loro consiglio segreto ed espose compiutamente con la sua parola tutta la perfidia di quelle regioni.
3 Then they decreed to destroy all flesh, that did not obey the commandment of his mouth.	3 Essi decisero che si dovesse punire con la distruzione chiunque non si era allineato con l'ordine da lui emanato.
4 And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him.	4 Quando ebbe finito la consultazione, Nabucodònosor re degli Assiri chiamò Oloferne, generale supremo del suo esercito, che teneva il secondo posto dopo di lui, e gli disse:
5 Thus saith the great king, the lord of the whole earth, Behold, thou shalt go forth from my presence, and take with thee men that trust in their own strength, of footmen an hundred and twenty thousand; and the number of horses with their riders twelve thousand.	5 "Questo dice il gran re, il signore di tutta la terra: Ecco tu uscirai come mio luogotenente e prenderai con te uomini valorosi: centoventimila fanti e un contingente di dodicimila cavalli con i loro cavalieri;
6 And thou shalt go against all the west country, because they disobeyed my commandment.	6 quindi muoverai contro tutti i paesi di occidente, perché quelle regioni hanno disobbedito al mio comando.
7 And thou shalt declare unto that they prepare for me earth and water: for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine army, and I will give them for a spoil unto them:	7 A costoro ordinerai di preparare la terra e l'acqua, perché con collera piomberò su di loro e coprirò la terra con i piedi del mio esercito e li metterò in suo potere per il saccheggio.
8 So that their slain shall fill their valleys and brooks and the river shall be filled with their dead, till it overflow:	8 Quelli di loro che cadranno colpiti riempiranno le loro valli e ogni torrente e fiume sarà pieno dei loro cadaveri fino a straripare;
9 And I will lead them captives to the utmost parts of all the earth.	9 i loro prigionieri li spingerò fino agli estremi di tutta la terra.
10 Thou therefore shalt go forth. and take beforehand for me all their coasts: and if they will yield themselves unto thee, thou shalt reserve them for me till the day of their punishment.	10 Tu dunque va' e occupa per me tutto il loro paese e, quando si saranno arresi a te, li terrai a mia disposizione fino al giorno del loro castigo.
11 But concerning them that rebel, let not thine eye spare them; but put them to the slaughter, and spoil them wheresoever thou goest.	11 Quanto ai ribelli, non abbia il tuo occhio compassione di destinarli alla morte e alla devastazione in tutto il territorio.
12 For as I live, and by the power of my kingdom, whatsoever I have spoken, that will I do by mine hand.	12 Come è vero che vivo io e vive la potenza del mio regno, questo ho detto e questo farò di mia mano.
13 And take thou heed that thou transgress none of the commandments of thy lord, but accomplish them fully, as I have commanded thee, and defer not to do them.	13 Da parte tua bada di non trasgredire alcuna parola del tuo signore, ma eseguisci esattamente ciò che ti ho comandato e non indugiare a tradurre in atto i comandi".
14 Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord, and called ail the governors and captains, and the officers of the army of Assur;	14 Oloferne uscì dalla corte del suo signore e convocò i comandanti, gli strateghi e gli ufficiali dell'esercito assiro;
15 And he mustered the chosen men for the battle, as his lord had commanded him, unto an hundred and twenty thousand, and twelve thousand archers on horseback;	15 quindi scelse e contò gli uomini per le sue formazioni, come gli aveva comandato il suo signore, in numero di centoventimila, più dodicimila arcieri a cavallo,
16 And he ranged them, as a great army is ordered for the war.	16 e li ordinò come si usa inquadrare la truppa per la guerra.
17 And he took camels and asses for their carriages, a very great number; and sheep and oxen and goats without number for their provision:	17 Prese poi cammelli e asini e muli in dotazione alle truppe, in numero grandissimo, e ancora pecore e buoi e capre in quantità innumerevole per il loro vettovagliamento.
18 And plenty of victual for every man of the army, and very much gold and silver out of the king's house.	18 Provvide ancora razioni in abbondanza per ciascun uomo e gran rifornimento d'oro e d'argento dal tesoro del re.
19 Then he went forth and all his power to go before king Nabuchodonosor in the voyage, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their chariots, and horsemen, and their chosen footmen.	19 Partirono dunque lui e tutte le sue truppe per iniziare la spedizione e precedere il re Nabucodònosor e ricoprire la terra occidentale con i loro carri e i cavalieri e la fanteria scelta.
20 A great number also sundry countries came with them like locusts, and like the sand of the earth: for the multitude was without number.	20 Si unì anche a loro una moltitudine varia, numerosa come le cavallette e come la polvere del suolo, che non si poteva affatto contare per la grande quantità.
21 And they went forth of Nineve three days' journey toward the plain of Bectileth, and pitched from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the upper Cilicia.	21 Mossero da Ninive camminando tre giorni in direzione della pianura di Bectilet e si accamparono a distanza di Bectilet vicino al monte che sta sulla sinistra della Cilicia superiore.
22 Then he took all his army, his footmen, and horsemen and chariots, and went from thence into the hill country;	22 Di là, muovendo tutto il suo esercito, fanti e cavalli e carri, Oloferne si diresse verso la montagna.
23 And destroyed Phud and Lud, and spoiled all the children of Rasses, and the children of Israel, which were toward the wilderness at the south of the land of the Chellians.	23 Quindi devastò Fud e Lud e depredò i figli di Rassis e gli Ismaeliti, che abitavano lungo il deserto a mezzogiorno di Cheleon.
24 Then he went over Euphrates, and went through Mesopotamia, and destroyed all the high cities that were upon the river Arbonai, till ye come to the sea.	24 In seguito passò l'Eufrate, attraversò la Mesopotamia e demolì le città che s'innalzavano sul torrente Abrona e nel territorio fino al mare.
25 And he took the borders of Cilicia, and killed all that resisted him, and came to the borders of Japheth, which were toward the south, over against Arabia.	25 Poi invase i paesi della Cilicia, sterminò quanti gli si opponevano e venne nella regione di Iafet verso mezzogiorno alle frontiere dell'Arabia.
26 He compassed also all the children of Madian, and burned up their tabernacles, and spoiled their sheepcotes.	26 Accerchiò anche tutti i Madianiti e appiccò il fuoco ai loro attendamenti e depredò il loro bestiame.
27 Then he went down into the plain of Damascus in the time of wheat harvest, and burnt up all their fields, and destroyed their flocks and herds, also he spoiled their cities, and utterly wasted their countries, and smote all their young men with the edge of the sword.	27 Proseguendo, scese verso la pianura di Damasco nei giorni della mietitura del grano, diede fuoco a tutti i loro campi e votò allo sterminio i loro greggi e armenti, saccheggiò le loro città, devastò le loro campagne e passò a fil di spada tutti i giovani.
28 Therefore the fear and dread of him fell upon all the inhabitants of the sea coasts, which were in Sidon and Tyrus, and them that dwelt in Sur and Ocina, and all that dwelt in Jemnaan; and they that dwelt in Azotus and Ascalon feared him greatly.	28 Allora si sparse la paura e il terrore di lui fra tutte le popolazioni della costa, su quelle che si trovavano in Sidòne e in Tiro, fra gli abitanti di Sur e Okina, su tutte le genti di Iemnaan, e anche gli abitanti di Asdòd e Àscalon ne ebbero grande terrore.
