1 And in the eighteenth year, the two and twentieth day of the first month, there was talk in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should, as he said, avenge himself on all the earth.	1 Le vingt-deuxième jour du premier mois, en la dix-huitième année de son règne, on parla dans le palais de Nabukodonozor, roi des Assyriens, de tirer vengeance de toute la terre, selon la promesse qu’il avait faite.
2 So he called unto him all his officers, and all his nobles, and communicated with them his secret counsel, and concluded the afflicting of the whole earth out of his own mouth.	2 Il rassembla donc tous ses généraux, tous les chefs, et leur exposa le projet qu’il avait décidé en lui-même. Il voulait en finir, d’une parole de sa bouche, avec ce mauvais vouloir de la terre entière.
3 Then they decreed to destroy all flesh, that did not obey the commandment of his mouth.	3 Et tous furent d’accord pour exterminer tous ceux qui n’avaient pas obéi à sa parole.
4 And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him.	4 À la fin du conseil, Nabukodonozor roi des Assyriens appela Holoferne, général en chef de son armée, son adjoint, et il lui dit:
5 Thus saith the great king, the lord of the whole earth, Behold, thou shalt go forth from my presence, and take with thee men that trust in their own strength, of footmen an hundred and twenty thousand; and the number of horses with their riders twelve thousand.	5 “Ainsi parle le grand roi, le seigneur de toute la terre: Dès que tu m’auras quitté, tu prendras avec toi des hommes sûrs de leur force, environ 120 000 fantassins, une grande quantité de chevaux avec 12 000 cavaliers,
6 And thou shalt go against all the west country, because they disobeyed my commandment.	6 et tu iras combattre tous les pays de l’Occident, car ils ont désobéi à mon ordre.
7 And thou shalt declare unto that they prepare for me earth and water: for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine army, and I will give them for a spoil unto them:	7 Tu leur ordonneras de se préparer à l’esclavage, car dans ma colère, je vais marcher contre eux. Les pas de mes soldats fouleront toute la terre et je la livrerai au pillage.
8 So that their slain shall fill their valleys and brooks and the river shall be filled with their dead, till it overflow:	8 Les blessés rempliront les ravins, tous les torrents et tous les fleuves seront remplis de cadavres jusqu’à déborder.
9 And I will lead them captives to the utmost parts of all the earth.	9 Je déporterai les prisonniers jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
10 Thou therefore shalt go forth. and take beforehand for me all their coasts: and if they will yield themselves unto thee, thou shalt reserve them for me till the day of their punishment.	10 Va donc et prépare-moi le terrain. S’ils se livrent à toi, tu me les garderas pour le jour du châtiment; s’ils ne t’écoutent pas,
11 But concerning them that rebel, let not thine eye spare them; but put them to the slaughter, and spoil them wheresoever thou goest.	11 tu seras sans pitié pour eux, tu les livreras au massacre et tout le pays au pillage.
12 For as I live, and by the power of my kingdom, whatsoever I have spoken, that will I do by mine hand.	12 Car aussi vrai que je suis vivant et que mon royaume est puissant, ce que ma bouche a dit, mes mains le feront.
13 And take thou heed that thou transgress none of the commandments of thy lord, but accomplish them fully, as I have commanded thee, and defer not to do them.	13 Quant à toi, ne désobéis à aucun des ordres de ton seigneur! Exécute point par point tout ce que je t’ai ordonné et exécute-le sans retard!”
14 Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord, and called ail the governors and captains, and the officers of the army of Assur;	14 Holoferne se retira donc de la présence de son seigneur. Il appela les chefs, les généraux, les officiers de l’armée d’Assyrie.
15 And he mustered the chosen men for the battle, as his lord had commanded him, unto an hundred and twenty thousand, and twelve thousand archers on horseback;	15 Il dénombra les hommes de guerre pour la bataille, comme son seigneur le lui avait ordonné; il y avait environ 120 000 hommes et 12 000 archers à cheval.
16 And he ranged them, as a great army is ordered for the war.	16 Il les organisa comme on organise une grande armée.
17 And he took camels and asses for their carriages, a very great number; and sheep and oxen and goats without number for their provision:	17 Il prit des chameaux, des ânes et des mulets en grande quantité pour porter les bagages, et comme provisions il emmena des moutons, des bœufs et des chèvres en nombre incalculable.
18 And plenty of victual for every man of the army, and very much gold and silver out of the king's house.	18 Il avait ainsi tout le ravitaillement nécessaire pour chaque homme, ainsi qu’une masse d’or et d’argent venant du palais royal.
19 Then he went forth and all his power to go before king Nabuchodonosor in the voyage, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their chariots, and horsemen, and their chosen footmen.	19 Il se mit en route avec toute son armée pour conquérir toutes les terres situées à l’occident. Avec ses chars, ses cavaliers et les fantassins, il précédait le roi Nabukodonozor.
20 A great number also sundry countries came with them like locusts, and like the sand of the earth: for the multitude was without number.	20 Un peuple nombreux comme des sauterelles ou comme la poussière de la terre, les accompagnait, leur nombre était tel qu’on ne pouvait les compter.
21 And they went forth of Nineve three days' journey toward the plain of Bectileth, and pitched from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the upper Cilicia.	21 Quittant Ninive, ils marchèrent trois jours dans la direction de la plaine de Bektilet. De Bektilet ils allèrent camper au pied de la montagne, à gauche de la Haute-Cilicie.
22 Then he took all his army, his footmen, and horsemen and chariots, and went from thence into the hill country;	22 Puis avec toute son armée, avec les fantassins, les cavaliers et les chars, Holoferne s’engagea dans la montagne.
23 And destroyed Phud and Lud, and spoiled all the children of Rasses, and the children of Israel, which were toward the wilderness at the south of the land of the Chellians.	23 Il attaqua Pout et Loud, il rançonna tous les fils de Rassis et ceux d’Ismaël qui vivent à l’entrée du désert, au sud de Chéléon.
24 Then he went over Euphrates, and went through Mesopotamia, and destroyed all the high cities that were upon the river Arbonai, till ye come to the sea.	24 Il longea l’Euphrate, il traversa la Mésopotamie, il dévasta toutes les villes qui dominaient le torrent d’Abrona jusqu’à arriver à la mer.
25 And he took the borders of Cilicia, and killed all that resisted him, and came to the borders of Japheth, which were toward the south, over against Arabia.	25 Il s’empara des pays de la Cilicie, massacra tous ceux qui lui résistaient et arriva jusqu’aux limites méridionales de Jafet, en face de l’Arabie.
26 He compassed also all the children of Madian, and burned up their tabernacles, and spoiled their sheepcotes.	26 Il encercla tout le peuple des Madianites, brûla leurs campements et pilla leurs parcs à brebis.
27 Then he went down into the plain of Damascus in the time of wheat harvest, and burnt up all their fields, and destroyed their flocks and herds, also he spoiled their cities, and utterly wasted their countries, and smote all their young men with the edge of the sword.	27 Ensuite il descendit dans la plaine de Damas au moment de la fauche des blés, et il mit le feu aux moissons. Il extermina le petit et le gros bétail, il pilla les villes, dévasta les campagnes et tua tous les jeunes par l’épée.
28 Therefore the fear and dread of him fell upon all the inhabitants of the sea coasts, which were in Sidon and Tyrus, and them that dwelt in Sur and Ocina, and all that dwelt in Jemnaan; and they that dwelt in Azotus and Ascalon feared him greatly.	28 La terreur et l’épouvante s’emparèrent alors de tous les habitants de la côte, que ce soit à Sidon, à Tyr, à Sour, à Okina ou à Jamnia; les habitants d’Azot et d’Ascalon étaient terrorisés.
