1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,	1 Paroles de Néhémie, fils de Hakalya. En la vingtième année du règne d’Artaxerxès, au mois de Kisleu, j’étais dans la forteresse de Suse.
2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.	2 Comme un de mes frères, Hanani, venait d’arriver avec quelques hommes de Juda, je les interrogeai au sujet des Juifs, des survivants qui étaient revenus de la captivité, et sur Jérusalem.
3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.	3 Ils me répondirent: - “Là-bas, dans la Province, ceux qui sont rentrés de la captivité, les survivants, vivent dans une grande misère et au milieu des humiliations; le rempart de Jérusalem n’est que brèches et les portes sont brûlées.”
4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,	4 En entendant cela, je me suis assis et j’ai pleuré. Et pendant plusieurs jours je suis resté dans le deuil: je jeûnais et je priais devant le Dieu du Ciel,
5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:	5 et je lui disais: - “Ah! Yahvé, Dieu du Ciel, Dieu grand et terrible, toi qui gardes ton Alliance et ta fidélité à ceux qui t’aiment et observent tes commandements!
6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.	6 Écoute attentivement, ouvre les yeux, entends la prière de ton serviteur! Car tu le vois, jour et nuit je prie pour les fils d’Israël, tes serviteurs: je confesse les péchés des fils d’Israël. Oui, nous avons péché contre toi; moi et la maison de mon père, nous avons péché!
7 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.	7 Nous nous sommes très mal conduits envers toi, nous n’avons pas observé les commandements, les ordonnances et les décrets que tu nous avais donnés par Moïse, ton serviteur.
8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:	8 Souviens-toi cependant de la parole que tu as confiée à Moïse, ton serviteur, lorsque tu lui as dit: “Si vous êtes infidèles, je vous disperserai parmi les nations,
9 But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.	9 mais quand vous reviendrez vers moi, quand vous observerez mes commandements et les mettrez en pratique, même si vos exilés se trouvaient au bout du ciel, je les rassemblerais et je les ferais revenir au lieu que j’ai choisi pour y faire habiter mon Nom.
10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.	10 “Car ils sont tes serviteurs et ton peuple que tu as délivrés par ta grande force et par ta main puissante.
11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.	11 Ah! Seigneur, écoute attentivement la prière de ton serviteur, la prière de tes serviteurs qui trouvent leur joie à craindre ton Nom; fais donc aujourd’hui réussir ton serviteur et fais-lui gagner le cœur du roi.” En ce temps-là j’étais auprès du roi, je lui préparais ses boissons.
