1 Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.	1 Il arriva ensuite que Naas, roi des Ammonites, mourut, et son fils régna à sa place.
2 And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.	2 Alors David dit : Je veux témoigner de l'affection à Hanon, fils de Naas; car son père en a montré à mon égard. Il envoya donc des ambassadeurs pour le consoler sur la mort de son père. Mais, quand ils furent arrivés sur les terres des Ammonites pour consoler Hanon,
3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?	3 les principaux du pays dirent à Hanon : Vous croyez peut-être que c'est pour honorer votre père que David vous a envoyé des consolateurs, et vous ne voyez pas qu'ils ne sont venus que pour reconnaître votre pays, et l'explorer, et y tout découvrir.
4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Hanon fit donc raser la tête et la barbe aux serviteurs de David, leur fit couper leurs tuniques depuis le haut des cuisses jusqu'aux pieds, et les renvoya ensuite.
5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.	5 Lorsqu'ils furent partis, et qu'ils eurent averti David, il envoya au-devant d'eux, à cause de ce grand outrage qu'ils avaient reçu, et leur ordonna de demeurer à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que leur barbe eût repoussé, et de revenir ensuite.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.	6 Mais les Ammonites, voyant qu'ils avaient offensé David, envoyèrent, tant de la part d'Hanon que de celle de tout le peuple, mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde des chars de guerre et des cavaliers dans la Mésopotamie, dans la Syrie de Maacha et dans Soba.
7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.	7 Ils assemblèrent donc trente-deux mille chars, et le roi de Maacha avec son peuple. Tous ces gens vinrent camper en face de Médaba. Et les Ammonites, s'étant aussi assemblés de leurs villes, marchèrent au combat.
8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.	8 A cette nouvelle, David envoya Joab avec toutes ses meilleures troupes.
9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.	9 Les fils d'Ammon sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille près de la porte de la ville; et les rois qui étaient venus à leur secours campèrent séparément dans la campagne.
10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.	10 Joab, ayant remarqué qu'on se préparait à le combattre et de front et par derrière, prit l'élite de toutes les troupes d'Israël, et marcha contre les Syriens.
11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.	11 Il donna le reste de l'armée à Abisaï, son frère, pour marcher contre les Ammonites;
12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.	12 et il lui dit : Si les Syriens ont de l'avantage sur moi, tu viendras à mon secours; et si les Ammonites en ont sur toi, j'irai aussi te secourir.
13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.	13 Agis en homme de coeur, et combattons généreusement pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu; et le Seigneur ordonnera de tout comme il Lui plaira.
14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.	14 Joab marcha donc contre les Syriens avec les troupes qu'il commandait, et il les mit en fuite.
15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.	15 Les Ammonites, voyant que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, s'enfuirent aussi eux-mêmes de devant son frère Abisaï, et se retirèrent dans la ville. Et Joab s'en retourna à Jérusalem.
16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.	16 Et lorsque les Syriens eurent vu qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils envoyèrent chercher les autres Syriens qui étaient au delà du fleuve. Sophach, général de l'armée d'Adarézer, les commandait.
17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.	17 On l'annonça à David, qui assembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain et vint fondre sur eux, en les attaquant de front tandis qu'ils luttaient de leur côté.
18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.	18 Mais les Syriens prirent la fuite devant Israël; et David tua sept mille hommes des chars, et quarante mille hommes de pied, et Sophach, général de l'armée.
19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.	19 Alors tous les serviteurs d'Adarézer, se voyant vaincus par les Israélites, passèrenta dans le parti de David, et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus donner de secours aux Ammonites.
