1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.	1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu là pour le proclamer roi.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)	2 Jéroboam fils de Nabat en fut averti quand il était encore en Égypte où il s’était enfui loin du roi Salomon: aussitôt il rentra d’Égypte.
3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,	3 On l’envoya chercher, après quoi Jéroboam et toute la communauté d’Israël s’en vinrent trouver Roboam et lui dirent:
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.	4 “Ton père nous a imposé un joug pesant. Si tu allèges ces travaux forcés, ce joug pesant que ton père nous a fait porter, nous te servirons.”
5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.	5 Il leur répondit: “Allez, vous reviendrez me voir dans trois jours.” Et le peuple s’en alla.
6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?	6 Le roi Roboam consulta les anciens qui avaient été les conseillers de son père Salomon quand il vivait. Il leur dit: “Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?”
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.	7 Ils lui répondirent: “Si aujourd’hui tu te fais leur serviteur, si tu te montres conciliant dans ta réponse, ils seront pour toujours à ton service.”
8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:	8 Mais Roboam n’écouta pas le conseil des anciens, il se tourna vers les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, et il leur demanda leur avis.
9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?	9 Il leur dit: “Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple? Vous savez qu’ils me disent: ‘Rends moins pénible le joug que ton père nous a fait porter.’ ”
10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.	10 Les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui répondirent: “Ces gens-là t’ont dit: ‘Ton père nous a fait porter un joug pesant, allège notre fardeau!’ Tu vas leur répondre: ‘Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.	11 Mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant? Avec moi ce sera pire. Mon père vous a corrigés avec des lanières de cuir? Avec moi, les fouets auront des pointes de fer.’ ”
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.	12 Au troisième jour Jéroboam et tout le peuple d’Israël revinrent auprès de Roboam, puisque le roi leur avait dit: “Dans trois jours vous reviendrez.”
13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;	13 Le roi parla sèchement au peuple; il ne tint pas compte du conseil des anciens,
14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.	14 mais il leur dit, comme voulaient les jeunes gens: “Si mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, avec moi ce sera pire. Si mon père vous a corrigés avec des lanières de cuir, avec moi les fouets auront des pointes de fer.”
15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.	15 Le roi ne voulut donc pas entendre le peuple; il y eut là une intervention de Yahvé, afin de réaliser cela même qu’il avait dit à Jéroboam fils de Nabat par la bouche d’Ahiya de Silo.
16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.	16 Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l’écoutait pas, le peuple répliqua au roi: “Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n’avons rien à hériter du fils de Jessé. Allez, Israël! À tes tentes! Et maintenant, David, assure toi-même la nourriture de ta maison!” Et tout Israël regagna ses foyers.
17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.	17 (Les Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda reconnurent Roboam comme roi.)
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.	18 Le roi Roboam envoya Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais tout Israël le reçut avec des pierres et il mourut. Roboam fut obligé de monter sur son char et de s’enfuir à Jérusalem.
19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.	19 Et depuis ce jour jusqu’à maintenant, Israël a renié la maison de David.
20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.	20 Quand tout Israël apprit que Jéroboam était revenu, ils l’envoyèrent chercher pour l’assemblée, et ils le firent roi sur tout Israël; seule la tribu de Juda resta fidèle à la maison de David.
21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.	21 Après son retour à Jérusalem, Roboam convoqua toute la maison de Juda ainsi que la tribu de Benjamin, environ 180 000 hommes d’élite entraînés au combat. C’était pour faire la guerre à la maison d’Israël et rendre le royaume à Roboam fils de Salomon.
22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,	22 À ce moment une parole de Dieu fut adressée à Chémaya, l’homme de Dieu:
23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,	23 “Voici ce que tu diras à Roboam fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple:
24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.	24 N’allez pas combattre vos frères, les fils d’Israël. Que chacun retourne chez soi, car c’est moi qui ai arrangé tout cela.” Ils écoutèrent la parole de Yahvé et, comme il leur disait, ils s’en retournèrent chacun chez soi.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.	25 Jéroboam fortifia Sichem dans la montagne d’Éphraïm; il y habita un temps, puis il la quitta pour Pénuel qu’il fortifia également.
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:	26 Jéroboam se dit: “Le royaume pourrait bien revenir à la maison de David.
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.	27 Si ce peuple continue de monter à Jérusalem pour offrir des sacrifices dans la Maison de Yahvé, le cœur du peuple se retournera vers Yahvé et vers Roboam roi de Juda, et ils me tueront.”
28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.	28 Après avoir pris conseil, le roi Jéroboam fit donc deux veaux en or et il dit au peuple: “Ne montez plus à Jérusalem, la chose a assez duré. Israël, voici ton Dieu qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!”
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.	29 Il plaça l’un des veaux à Béthel et l’autre à Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.	30 C’est de là qu’est parti le péché d’Israël; le peuple escorta l’un des veaux jusqu’à Béthel, et ils allèrent en procession devant l’autre jusqu’à Dan.
31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.	31 Jéroboam construisit des sanctuaires, ou Hauts-Lieux, il y établit des prêtres pris parmi le peuple, qui n’appartenaient pas à la tribu de Lévi.
32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.	32 Jéroboam institua une fête le quinzième jour du huitième mois, comme la fête qui existait en Juda, et il sacrifia sur l’autel. Il le fit à Béthel où il offrit des sacrifices aux veaux qu’il avait faits, et c’est à Béthel qu’il établit les prêtres pour les Hauts-Lieux qu’il avait construits.
33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.	33 Il monta donc à l’autel le quinzième jour du huitième mois, une date qu’il avait choisie lui-même et dont il avait fait une fête pour les fils d’Israël; il monta à l’autel et y brûla de l’encens.
