1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?	1 Jacob, tendo ouvido dizer que no Egito se vendia de comer, disse a seus filhos: Por que estais a olhar uns para os outros?
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.	2 Ouvi dizer que no Egito se vendia trigo: ide e comprai-nos o necessário, para que possamos viver e não sejamos consumidos pela fome.
3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.	3 Os dez irmãos de José foram, pois, ao Egito para comprar trigo.
4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.	4 Benjamim ficou retido em casa por Jacob, o qual tinha dito aos teus irmãos: É de temer que lhe aconteça alguma desgraça na viagem.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.	5 Eles entraram na terra do Egito com outros que iam comprar (trigo), porque existia a fome na terra de Canaan.
6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.	6 José era governador na terra do Egito, e, conforme a sua vontade, se vendia o trigo aos povos. Tendo-se prostrado diante dele os seus irmãos, ele os reconheceu,
7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.	7 e falava-lhes com aspereza, como a estrangeiros, perguntando-lhes: Donde vindes? Eles responderam: Da terra de Canaan, a fim de comprar o necessário para o sustento.
8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.	8 Embora ele reconhecesse os irmãos, todavia não foi reconhecido por eles.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.	9 Lembrado dos sonhos que em outro tempo tivera, disse-lhes: Vós sois espiões; viestes reconhecer os lugares mais fracos do pais.
10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.	10 Eles responderam: Não é assim, senhor, mas os teus servos vieram para comprar de comer.
11 We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.	11 Somos todos filhos de um mesmo homem; vimos com sentimentos pacíficos, nem os teus servos maquinam mal algum.
12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.	12 Ele respondeu-lhes: Isso não é assim; vós viestes observar os lugares não fortificados deste país.
13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.	13 Eles porém disseram: Nós, teus servos, somos doze irmãos, filhos de um mesmo homem na terra de Canaan: o mais pequeno está com nosso pai, o outro já não existe.
14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:	14 E o que eu disse, tornou (José): sois espiões.
15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.	15 Desde já vos porei à prova: pela saúde de Faraó não saireis daqui, até que venha vosso irmão mais novo.
16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.	16 Mandai um de vós que o traga: vós ficareis prisioneiros, até que se prove se é verdadeiro ou falso o que dissestes: aliás, pela saúde de Faraó, sois espiões.
17 And he put them all together into ward three days.	17 Meteu-os, pois, em prisão, durante três dias.
18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:	18 Tendo-os mandado tirar do cárcere no terceiro dia, disse: Fazei o que vos disse, e vivereis, por quanto temo a Deus.
19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:	19 Se sois de paz, um vosso irmão fique ligado no cárcere: vós ide e levai para vossas casas o trigo que comprastes.
20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.	20 Trazei-me vosso irmão mais novo, para que eu possa verificar ás vossas palavras, e não sejais condenados à morte. Eles fizeram como (José) lhes tinha dito;
21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.	21 disseram uns para os outros: Justamente sofremos estas coisas porque pecamos contra o nosso irmão, vendo a angústia do seu coração, quando nos suplicava e nós o não atendemos; por isso veio sobre nós esta tribulação.
22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.	22 Ruben, um deles, disse: Porventura não vos disse eu: Não pequeis contra o menino? E vós não me ouvistes. Eis que se requer (de nós) o seu sangue.
23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.	23 Ora eles não sabiam que José os entendia, porque lhes falava por intérprete.
24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.	24 (José) retirou-se, um momento, e chorou; e, voltando; falou com eles.
25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.	25 Tendo mandado tomar e ligar Simeão na presença deles, mandou aos oficiais que enchessem os seus sacos de trigo e repusessem o dinheiro de cada um no seu (respectivo) saco, dando-lhes, além disso, mantimentos para o caminho. E assim se fez.
26 And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.	26 Eles levando trigo sobre os seus jumentos, partiram.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.	27 Abrindo um deles o saco, para dar de comer ao (seu) jumento na estalagem, vendo o dinheiro, na boca do saco,
28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?	28 disse para seus irmãos: Tornaram-me a dar o dinheiro, ei-lo aqui no (meu) saco. E, pasmados e perturbados, disseram uns para os outros: Que é isto que Deus nos fez?
29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,	29 Chegaram a casa de Jacob, seu pai, na terra de Canaan, e contaram-lhe tudo o que lhes tinha acontecido, dizendo:
30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.	30 O Senhor daquela terra falou-nos com dureza e julgou que nós eramos espiões do país.
31 And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:	31 Nós respondemos-lhes: Somos homens pacíficos, não maquinamos traição alguma.
32 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.	32 Somos doze irmãos gerados de um mesmo pai; um já não existe, e o mais novo está com nosso pai na terra de Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:	33 Ele disse-nos: Provarei deste modo se sois homens pacíficos: Deixa, um vosso irmão em meu poder, tomai os mantimentos necessários para as vossas famílias, e parti:
34 And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.	34 trazei-me (depois) o vosso irmão mais novo, para que eu saiba que não sois espiões e possais, recuperar este, que fica em prisão, e tenhais licença de comprar o que quiserdes.
35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.	35 Dito isto, ao despejar o trigo, cada um deles encontrou na boca do (seu) saco o dinheiro embrulhado; ao verem isto, eles e seu pai ficaram aterrados.
36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.	36 Jacob disse: Vós levastes-me a ficar sem filhos: José já não existe, Simeão está em cadeias, e haveis de levar-me Benjamin. Sobre mim caíram todos estes males.
37 And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.	37 Ruben respondeu-lhe; Mata os meus dois filhos, se eu to não trouxer outra vez; entrega-to nas minhas mãos e eu to restituirei.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.	38 Ele, porém, disse: Meu filho não irá convosco: seu irmão morreu, e ele ficou só; se lhe acontecer alguma desgraça na terra para onde ides, fareis descer os meus cabelos brancos com (essa) dor à habitação dos mortos.
