1 Quand notre embarquement pour l'Italie eut été décidé, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers àun centurion de la cohorte Augusta, nommé Julius.	1 Then it was decided to send him by ship to Italy, and that Paul, with the others in custody, should be delivered to a centurion named Julius, of the cohort of Augusta.
2 Nous montâmes à bord d'un vaisseau d'Adramyttium qui allait partir pour les côtes d'Asie, et nousprîmes la mer. Il y avait avec nous Aristarque, un Macédonien de Thessalonique.	2 After climbing aboard a ship from Adramyttium, we set sail and began to navigate along the ports of Asia, with Aristarchus, the Macedonian from Thessalonica, joining us.
3 Le lendemain, nous touchâmes à Sidon. Julius fit preuve d'humanité à l'égard de Paul en luipermettant d'aller trouver ses amis et de recevoir leurs bons offices.	3 And on the following day, we arrived at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul humanely, permitted him to go to his friends and to look after himself.
4 Partis de là, nous longeâmes la côte de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.	4 And when we had set sail from there, we navigated below Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
5 Traversant ensuite les mers de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes au bout de quinze jours àMyre en Lycie.	5 And navigating though the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we arrived at Lystra, which is in Lycia.
6 Là, le centurion trouva un navire alexandrin en partance pour l'Italie et nous fit monter à bord.	6 And there the centurion found a ship from Alexandria sailing to Italy, and he transferred us to it.
7 Pendant plusieurs jours la navigation fut lente, et nous arrivâmes à grand-peine à la hauteur deCnide. Le vent ne nous permit pas d'aborder, nous longeâmes alors la Crète vers le cap Salmoné,	7 And when we had sailed slowly for many days and had barely arrived opposite Cnidus, for the wind was hindering us, we sailed to Crete, near Salmone.
8 et après l'avoir côtoyée péniblement, nous arrivâmes à un endroit appelé Bons-Ports, près duquel setrouve la ville de Lasaïa.	8 And barely being able to sail past it, we arrived at a certain place, which is called Good Shelter, next to which was the city of Lasea.
9 Il s'était écoulé pas mal de temps, et la navigation était désormais périlleuse, car même le Jeûne étaitdéjà passé. Paul les en avertissait:	9 Then, after much time had passed, and since sailing would no longer be prudent because the Fast Day had now passed, Paul consoled them,
10 "Mes amis, leur disait-il, je vois que la navigation n'ira pas sans péril et sans grave dommage nonseulement pour la cargaison et le navire, mais même pour nos personnes."	10 and he said to them: “Men, I perceive that the voyage is now in danger of injury and much damage, not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our own lives.”
11 Le centurion se fiait au capitaine et à l'armateur plutôt qu'aux dires de Paul;	11 But the centurion put more trust in the captain and the navigator of the ship, than in the things being said by Paul.
12 le port se prêtait d'ailleurs mal à l'hivernage. La plupart furent donc d'avis de partir et de gagner, sipossible, pour y passer l'hiver, Phénix, un port de Crète tourné vers le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest.	12 And since it was not a fitting port in which to winter, the majority opinion was to sail from there, so that somehow they might be able to arrive at Phoenicia, in order to winter there, at a port of Crete, which looks out toward the southwest and northwest.
13 Un léger vent du sud s'étant levé, ils se crurent en mesure d'exécuter leur projet. Ils levèrent l'ancreet se mirent à côtoyer de près la Crète.	13 And since the south wind was blowing gently, they thought that they might reach their goal. And after they had set out from Asson, they weighed anchor at Crete.
14 Mais bientôt, venant de l'île, se déchaîna un vent d'ouragan nommé Euraquilon.	14 But not long afterward, a violent wind came against them, which is called the Northeast Wind.
15 Le navire fut entraîné et ne put tenir tête au vent; nous nous abandonnâmes donc à la dérive.	15 And once the ship had been caught in it and was not able to strive against the wind, giving over the ship to the winds, we were driven along.
16 Filant sous une petite île appelée Cauda, nous réussîmes à grand-peine à nous rendre maîtres de lachaloupe.	16 Then, being forced along a certain island, which is called the Tail, we were barely able to hold on to the ship’s lifeboat.
17 Après l'avoir hissée, on fit usage des engins de secours: on ceintura le navire; puis, par crainted'aller échouer sur la Syrte, on laissa glisser l'ancre flottante. On allait ainsi à la dérive.	17 When this was taken up, they used it to assist in securing the ship. For they were afraid that they might run aground. And having lowered the sails, they were being driven along in this way.
18 Le lendemain, comme nous étions furieusement battus de la tempête, on se mit à délester le navire	18 Then, since we were being tossed about strongly by the tempest, on the following day, they threw the heavy items overboard.
19 et, le troisième jour, de leurs propres mains, les matelots jetèrent les agrès à la mer.	19 And on the third day, with their own hands, they threw the equipment of the ship overboard.
20 Ni soleil ni étoiles n'avaient brillé depuis plusieurs jours, et la tempête gardait toujours la mêmeviolence; aussi tout espoir de salut était-il désormais perdu pour nous.	20 Then, when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no end to the storm was imminent, all hope for our safety was now taken away.
21 Il y avait longtemps qu'on n'avait plus mangé: alors Paul, debout au milieu des autres, leur dit: "Ilfallait m'écouter, mes amis, et ne pas quitter la Crète; on se serait épargné ce péril et ce dommage.	21 And after they had fasted for a long time, Paul, standing in their midst, said: “Certainly, men, you should have listened to me and not set out from Crete, so as to cause this injury and loss.
22 Quoi qu'il en soit, je vous invite à avoir bon courage, car aucun de vous n'y laissera la vie, le navireseul sera perdu.	22 And now, let me persuade you to be courageous in soul. For there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.
23 Cette nuit en effet m'est apparu un ange du Dieu auquel j'appartiens et que je sers,	23 For an Angel of God, who is assigned to me and whom I serve, stood beside me this night,
24 et il m'a dit: Sois sans crainte, Paul. Il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieut'accorde la vie de tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.	24 saying: ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! It is necessary for you to stand before Caesar. And behold, God has given to you all those who are sailing with you.’
25 Courage donc, mes amis! Je me fie à Dieu de ce qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.	25 Because of this, men, be courageous in soul. For I trust God that this will happen in the same way that it has been told to me.
26 Mais nous devons échouer sur une île."	26 But it is necessary for us to arrive at a certain island.”
27 C'était la quatorzième nuit et nous étions ballottés sur l'Adriatique, quand, vers minuit, les matelotspressentirent l'approche d'une terre.	27 Then, after the fourteenth night arrived, as we were navigating in the sea of Adria, about the middle of the night, the sailors believed that they saw some portion of the land.
28 Ils lancèrent la sonde et trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, ils la lancèrent encore ettrouvèrent quinze brasses.	28 And upon dropping a weight, they found a depth of twenty paces. And some distance from there, they found a depth of fifteen paces.
29 Craignant donc que nous n'allions échouer quelque part sur des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres àla poupe; et ils appelaient de leurs voeux la venue du jour.	29 Then, fearing that we might happen upon rough places, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and they were hoping for daylight to arrive soon.
30 Mais les matelots cherchaient à s'enfuir du navire. Ils mirent la chaloupe à la mer, sous prétexted'aller élonger les ancres de la proue.	30 Yet truly, the sailors were seeking a way to flee from the ship, for they had lowered a lifeboat into the sea, on the pretext that they were attempting to cast anchors from the bow of the ship.
31 Paul dit alors au centurion et aux soldats: "Si ces gens-là ne restent pas sur le navire, vous nepouvez être sauvés."	31 So Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you will not be able to be saved.”
32 Sur ce les soldats coupèrent les cordes de la chaloupe et la laissèrent tomber.	32 Then the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat, and they allowed it to fall.
33 En attendant que parût le jour, Paul engageait tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture. "Voiciaujourd'hui quatorze jours, disait-il, que, dans l'attente, vous restez à jeun, sans rien prendre.	33 And when it began to be light, Paul requested that they all take food, saying: “This is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting and continuing to fast, taking nothing.
34 Je vous engage donc à prendre de la nourriture, car c'est votre propre salut qui est ici en jeu. Nuld'entre vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête."	34 For this reason, I beg you to accept food for the sake of your health. For not a hair from the head of any of you shall perish.”
35 Cela dit, il prit du pain, rendit grâces à Dieu devant tous, le rompit et se mit à manger.	35 And when he had said these things, taking bread, he gave thanks to God in the sight of them all. And when he had broken it, he began to eat.
36 Alors, retrouvant leur courage, eux aussi prirent tous de la nourriture.	36 Then they all became more peaceful in soul. And they also took food.
37 Nous étions en tout sur le navire 276 personnes.	37 Truly, we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship.
38 Une fois rassasiés, on se mit à alléger le navire en jetant le blé à la mer.	38 And having been nourished with food, they lightened the ship, casting the wheat into the sea.
39 Quand le jour parut, les marins ne reconnurent pas la terre; ils distinguaient seulement une baieavec une plage, et ils se proposaient, si possible, d'y pousser le navire.	39 And when day had arrived, they did not recognize the landscape. Yet truly, they caught sight of a certain narrow inlet having a shore, into which they thought it might be possible to force the ship.
40 Ils détachèrent les ancres, qu'ils abandonnèrent à la mer; ils relâchèrent en même temps les amarresdes gouvernails. Puis, hissant au vent la voile d'artimon, ils se laissèrent porter vers la plage.	40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, at the same time loosing the restraints of the rudders. And so, raising the mainsail to the gusting wind, they pressed on toward the shore.
41 Mais ayant touché un haut-fond entre deux courants, ils y firent échouer le navire. La proue,fortement engagée, restait immobile, tandis que la poupe, violemment secouée, se disloquait.	41 And when we happened upon a place open to two seas, they ran the ship aground. And indeed, the bow, being immobilized, remained fixed, but truly the stern was broken by the violence of the sea.
42 Les soldats résolurent alors de tuer les prisonniers, de peur qu'il ne s'en échappât quelqu'un à lanage.	42 Then the soldiers were in agreement that they should kill the prisoners, lest anyone, after escaping by swimming, might flee.
43 Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, s'opposa à leur dessein. Il donna l'ordre à ceux quisavaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers et de gagner la terre;	43 But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, prohibited it from being done. And he ordered those who were able to swim to jump in first, and to escape, and to get to the land.
44 quant aux autres, ils la gagneraient, qui sur des planches, qui sur les épaves du navire. Et c'est ainsique tous parvinrent sains et saufs à terre.	44 And as for the others, some they carried on boards, and others on those things that belonged to the ship. And so it happened that every soul escaped to the land.
