1 Après cela, Jésus s'en alla de l'autre côté de la mer de Galilée ou de Tibériade.	1 After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee (of Tiberias).
2 Une grande foule le suivait, à la vue des signes qu'il opérait sur les malades.	2 A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.
3 Jésus gravit la montagne et là, il s'assit avec ses disciples.	3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.
4 Or la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.	4 The Jewish feast of Passover was near.
5 Levant alors les yeux et voyant qu'une grande foule venait à lui, Jésus dit à Philippe: "Où achèterons-nous des pains pour que mangent ces gens?"	5 When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?"
6 Il disait cela pour le mettre à l'épreuve, car lui-même savait ce qu'il allait faire.	6 He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do.
7 Philippe lui répondit: "Deux deniers de pain ne suffisent pas pour que chacun en reçoive un petitmorceau."	7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little (bit)."
8 Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit:	8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,
9 "Il y a ici un enfant, qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons; mais qu'est-ce que cela pour tant demonde?"	9 "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?"
10 Jésus leur dit: "Faites s'étendre les gens." Il y avait beaucoup d'herbe en ce lieu. Ils s'étendirent donc,au nombre d'environ 5.000 hommes.	10 Jesus said, "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.
11 Alors Jésus prit les pains et, ayant rendu grâces, il les distribua aux convives, de même aussi pour lespoissons, autant qu'ils en voulaient.	11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.
12 Quand ils furent repus, il dit à ses disciples: "Rassemblez les morceaux en surplus, afin que rien nesoit perdu."	12 When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted."
13 Ils les rassemblèrent donc et remplirent douze couffins avec les morceaux qui, des cinq pains d'orge,se trouvaient en surplus à ceux qui avaient mangé.	13 So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.
14 A la vue du signe qu'il venait de faire, les gens disaient: "C'est vraiment lui le prophète qui doit venirdans le monde."	14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world."
15 Alors Jésus, se rendant compte qu'ils allaient venir s'emparer de lui pour le faire roi, s'enfuit ànouveau dans la montagne, tout seul.	15 Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.
16 Quand le soir fut venu, ses disciples descendirent à la mer,	16 When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea,
17 et, montant en bateau, ils se rendaient de l'autre côté de la mer à Capharnaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit, Jésusn'était pas encore venu les rejoindre;	17 embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
18 et la mer, comme soufflait un grand vent, se soulevait.	18 The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
19 Ils avaient ramé environ 25 ou 30 stades, quand ils voient Jésus marcher sur la mer et s'approcher dubateau. Ils eurent peur.	19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.
20 Mais il leur dit: "C'est moi. N'ayez pas peur."	20 But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."
21 Ils étaient disposés à le prendre dans le bateau, mais aussitôt le bateau toucha terre là où ils serendaient.	21 They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.
22 Le lendemain, la foule qui se tenait de l'autre côté de la mer vit qu'il n'y avait eu là qu'une barque etque Jésus n'était pas monté dans le bateau avec ses disciples, mais que seuls ses disciples s'en étaient allés.	22 The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left.
23 Cependant, de Tibériade des bateaux vinrent près du lieu où l'on avait mangé le pain.	23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks.
24 Quand donc la foule vit que Jésus n'était pas là, ni ses disciples non plus, les gens s'embarquèrent etvinrent à Capharnaüm à la recherche de Jésus.	24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
25 L'ayant trouvé de l'autre côté de la mer, ils lui dirent: "Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici?"	25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
26 Jésus leur répondit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non pas parce que vousavez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé du pain et avez été rassasiés.	26 Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
27 Travaillez non pour la nourriture qui se perd, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure en vie éternelle,celle que vous donnera le Fils de l'homme, car c'est lui que le Père, Dieu, a marqué de son sceau."	27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."
28 Ils lui dirent alors: "Que devons-nous faire pour travailler aux oeuvres de Dieu?"	28 So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?"
29 Jésus leur répondit: "L'oeuvre de Dieu, c'est que vous croyiez en celui qu'il a envoyé."	29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent."
30 Ils lui dirent alors: "Quel signe fais-tu donc, pour qu'à sa vue nous te croyions? Quelle oeuvreaccomplis-tu?	30 So they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?
31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, selon ce qui est écrit: Il leur a donné à manger du painvenu du ciel."	31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
32 Jésus leur répondit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, non, ce n'est pas Moïse qui vous a donné lepain qui vient du ciel; mais c'est mon Père qui vous le donne, le pain qui vient du ciel, le vrai;	32 So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 car le pain de Dieu, c'est celui qui descend du ciel et donne la vie au monde."	33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
34 Ils lui dirent alors: "Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là."	34 So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."
35 Jésus leur dit: "Je suis le pain de vie. Qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim; qui croit en moi n'aurajamais soif.	35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
36 Mais je vous l'ai dit: vous me voyez et vous ne croyez pas.	36 But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not believe.
37 Tout ce que me donne le Père viendra à moi, et celui qui vient à moi, je ne le jetterai pas dehors;	37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
38 car je suis descendu du ciel pour faire non pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé.	38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
39 Or c'est la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé que je ne perde rien de tout ce qu'il m'a donné, mais que jele ressuscite au dernier jour.	39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on) the last day.
40 Oui, telle est la volonté de mon Père, que quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et jele ressusciterai au dernier jour."	40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day."
41 Les Juifs alors se mirent à murmurer à son sujet, parce qu'il avait dit: "Je suis le pain descendu duciel."	41 The Jews murmured about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven,"
42 Ils disaient: "Celui-là n'est-il pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous connaissons le père et la mère?Comment peut-il dire maintenant: Je suis descendu du ciel?"	42 and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
43 Jésus leur répondit: "Ne murmurez pas entre vous.	43 Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves.
44 Nul ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m'a envoyé ne l'attire; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.	44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.
45 Il est écrit dans les prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés par Dieu. Quiconque s'est mis à l'écoute duPère et à son école vient à moi.	45 It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.
46 Non que personne ait vu le Père, sinon celui qui vient d'auprès de Dieu: celui-là a vu le Père.	46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
47 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit a la vie éternelle.	47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
48 Je suis le pain de vie.	48 I am the bread of life.
49 Vos pères, dans le désert, ont mangé la manne et sont morts;	49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;
50 ce pain est celui qui descend du ciel pour qu'on le mange et ne meure pas.	50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.
51 Je suis le pain vivant, descendu du ciel. Qui mangera ce pain vivra à jamais. Et même, le pain que jedonnerai, c'est ma chair pour la vie du monde."	51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
52 Les Juifs alors se mirent à discuter fort entre eux; ils disaient: "Comment celui-là peut-il nous donnersa chair à manger?"	52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?"
53 Alors Jésus leur dit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l'hommeet ne buvez son sang, vous n'aurez pas la vie en vous.	53 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.
54 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle et je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.	54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
55 Car ma chair est vraiment une nourriture et mon sang vraiment une boisson.	55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.	56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
57 De même que le Père, qui est vivant, m'a envoyé et que je vis par le Père, de même celui qui memange, lui aussi vivra par moi.	57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.
58 Voici le pain descendu du ciel; il n'est pas comme celui qu'ont mangé les pères et ils sont morts; quimange ce pain vivra à jamais."	58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."
59 Tel fut l'enseignement qu'il donna dans une synagogue à Capharnaüm.	59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60 Après l'avoir entendu, beaucoup de ses disciples dirent: "Elle est dure, cette parole! Qui peutl'écouter?"	60 Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"
61 Mais, sachant en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient à ce propos, Jésus leur dit: "Cela vousscandalise?	61 Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?
62 Et quand vous verrez le Fils de l'homme monter là où il était auparavant?...	62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63 C'est l'esprit qui vivifie, la chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit et elles sontvie.	63 It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64 Mais il en est parmi vous qui ne croient pas." Jésus savait en effet dès le commencement qui étaientceux qui ne croyaient pas et qui était celui qui le livrerait.	64 But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.
65 Et il disait: "Voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, si cela ne lui est donné par lePère."	65 And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."
66 Dès lors, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent, et ils n'allaient plus avec lui.	66 As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.
67 Jésus dit alors aux Douze: "Voulez-vous partir, vous aussi?"	67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"
68 Simon-Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, à qui irons-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle.	68 Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 Nous, nous croyons, et nous avons reconnu que tu es le Saint de Dieu."	69 We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."
70 Jésus leur répondit: "N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les Douze? Et l'un d'entre vous est undémon."	70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?"
71 Il parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote; c'est lui en effet qui devait le livrer, lui, l'un des Douze.	71 He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.
