Deuxième livre des Macchabées 7

JERUSALEM	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 Il arriva aussi que sept frères ayant été arrêtés avec leur mère, le roi voulut les contraindre, enleur infligeant les fouets et les nerfs de boeuf, à toucher à la viande de porc (interdite par la loi).	1 It came to pass also, that seven brethren with their mother were taken, and compelled by the king against the law to taste swine's flesh, and were tormented with scourges and whips.
2 L'un d'eux se faisant leur porte-parole: "Que vas-tu, dit-il, demander et apprendre de nous?Nous sommes prêts à mourir plutôt que d'enfreindre les lois de nos pères."	2 But one of them that spake first said thus, What wouldest thou ask or learn of us? we are ready to die, rather than to transgress the laws of our fathers.
3 Le roi, hors de lui, fit mettre sur le feu des poêles et des chaudrons.	3 Then the king, being in a rage, commanded pans and caldrons to be made hot:
4 Sitôt qu'ils furent brûlants, il ordonna de couper la langue à celui qui avait été leur porte-parole, de lui enlever la peau de la tête et de lui trancher les extrémités, sous les yeux de ses autres frères et de samère.	4 Which forthwith being heated, he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first, and to cut off the utmost parts of his body, the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on.
5 Lorsqu'il fut complètement impotent, il commanda de l'approcher du feu, respirant encore, etde le faire passer à la poêle. Tandis que la vapeur de la poêle se répandait au loin, les autres s'exhortaientmutuellement avec leur mère à mourir avec vaillance:	5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members, he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire, and to be fried in the pan: and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed, they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully, saying thus,
6 "Le Seigneur Dieu voit, disaient-ils, et il a en vérité cette compassion de nous selon que Moïsel'a annoncé par le cantique qui proteste ouvertement en ces termes: Et il aura pitié de ses serviteurs."	6 The Lord God looketh upon us, and in truth hath comfort in us, as Moses in his song, which witnessed to their faces, declared, saying, And he shall be comforted in his servants.
7 Lorsque le premier eut quitté la vie de cette manière, on amena le second pour le supplice.Après lui avoir arraché la peau de la tête avec les cheveux, on lui demandait: "Veux-tu manger du porc, avantque ton corps soit torturé membre par membre?"	7 So when the first was dead after this number, they brought the second to make him a mocking stock: and when they had pulled off the skin of his head with the hair, they asked him, Wilt thou eat, before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body?
8 Il répondit dans la langue de ses pères: "Non!" C'est pourquoi lui aussi fut à son tour soumisaux tourments.	8 But he answered in his own language, and said, No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order, as the former did.
9 Au moment de rendre le dernier soupir: "Scélérat que tu es, dit-il, tu nous exclus de cette vieprésente, mais le Roi du monde nous ressuscitera pour une vie éternelle, nous qui mourons pour ses lois."	9 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life, but the King of the world shall raise us up, who have died for his laws, unto everlasting life.
10 Après lui on châtia le troisième. Il présenta aussitôt sa langue comme on le lui demandait ettendit ses mains avec intrépidité;	10 After him was the third made a mocking stock: and when he was required, he put out his tongue, and that right soon, holding forth his hands manfully.
11 il déclara courageusement: "C'est du Ciel que je tiens ces membres, mais à cause de ses loisje les méprise et c'est de lui que j'espère les recouvrer de nouveau.)"	11 And said courageously, These I had from heaven; and for his laws I despise them; and from him I hope to receive them again.
12 Le roi lui-même et son escorte furent frappés du courage de ce jeune homme qui comptait lessouffrances pour rien.	12 Insomuch that the king, and they that were with him, marvelled at the young man's courage, for that he nothing regarded the pains.
13 Ce dernier une fois mort, on soumit le quatrième aux mêmes tourments et tortures.	13 Now when this man was dead also, they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner.
14 Sur le point d'expirer il s'exprima de la sorte: "Mieux vaut mourir de la main des hommes entenant de Dieu l'espoir d'être ressuscité par lui, car pour toi il n'y aura pas de résurrection à la vie."	14 So when he was ready to die he said thus, It is good, being put to death by men, to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him: as for thee, thou shalt have no resurrection to life.
15 On amena ensuite le cinquième et on le tortura.	15 Afterward they brought the fifth also, and mangled him.
16 Mais lui, fixant les yeux sur le roi, lui disait: "Tu as, quoique corruptible, autorité sur leshommes, tu fais ce que tu veux. Ne pense pas cependant que notre race soit abandonnée de Dieu.	16 Then looked he unto the king, and said, Thou hast power over men, thou art corruptible, thou doest what thou wilt; yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God;
17 Pour toi, prends patience et tu verras sa grande puissance, comme il te tourmentera toi et tarace."	17 But abide a while, and behold his great power, how he will torment thee and thy seed.
18 Après celui-là ils amenèrent le sixième, qui dit, sur le point de mourir: "Ne te fais pas devaine illusion, c'est à cause de nous-mêmes que nous souffrons cela, ayant péché envers notre propre Dieu (aussinous est-il arrivé des choses étonnantes).	18 After him also they brought the sixth, who being ready to die said, Be not deceived without cause: for we suffer these things for ourselves, having sinned against our God: therefore marvellous things are done unto us.
19 Mais toi, ne t'imagine pas que tu seras impuni après avoir entrepris de faire la guerre à Dieu."	19 But think not thou, that takest in hand to strive against God, that thou shalt escape unpunished.
20 Eminemment admirable et digne d'une illustre mémoire fut la mère qui, voyant mourir sessept fils dans l'espace d'un seul jour, le supporta courageusement en vertu des espérances qu'elle plaçait dans leSeigneur.	20 But the mother was marvellous above all, and worthy of honourable memory: for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day, she bare it with a good courage, because of the hope that she had in the Lord.
21 Elle exhortait chacun d'eux, dans la langue de ses pères, et, remplie de nobles sentiments, elleanimait d'un mâle courage son raisonnement de femme. Elle leur disait:	21 Yea, she exhorted every one of them in her own language, filled with courageous spirits; and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach, she said unto them,
22 "Je ne sais comment vous avez apparu dans mes entrailles; ce n'est pas moi qui vous aigratifiés de l'esprit et de la vie; ce n'est pas moi qui ai organisé les éléments qui composent chacun de vous.	22 I cannot tell how ye came into my womb: for I neither gave you breath nor life, neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you;
23 Aussi bien le Créateur du monde, qui a formé le genre humain et qui est à l'origine de toutechose, vous rendra-t-il, dans sa miséricorde, et l'esprit et la vie, parce que vous vous méprisez maintenant vous-mêmes pour l'amour de ses lois."	23 But doubtless the Creator of the world, who formed the generation of man, and found out the beginning of all things, will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again, as ye now regard not your own selves for his laws' sake.
24 Antiochus se crut vilipendé et soupçonna un outrage dans ces paroles. Comme le plus jeuneétait encore en vie, non seulement il l'exhortait par des paroles, mais il lui donnait par des serments l'assurancede le rendre à la fois riche et très heureux, s'il abandonnait les traditions ancestrales, d'en faire son ami et de luiconfier de hauts emplois.	24 Now Antiochus, thinking himself despised, and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech, whilst the youngest was yet alive, did not only exhort him by words, but also assured him with oaths, that he would make him both a rich and a happy man, if he would turn from the laws of his fathers; and that also he would take him for his friend, and trust him with affairs.
25 Le jeune homme ne prêtant à cela aucune attention, le roi fit approcher la mère et l'engagea àdonner à l'adolescent des conseils pour sauver sa vie.	25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him, the king called his mother, and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life.
26 Lorsqu'il l'eut longuement exhortée, elle consentit à persuader son fils.	26 And when he had exhorted her with many words, she promised him that she would counsel her son.
27 Elle se pencha donc vers lui et, mystifiant le tyran cruel, elle s'exprima de la sorte dans lalangue de ses pères: "Mon fils, aie pitié de moi qui t'ai porté neuf mois dans mon sein, qui t'ai allaité trois ans,qui t'ai nourri et élevé jusqu'à l'âge où tu es (et pourvu à ton entretien).	27 But she bowing herself toward him, laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my son, have pity upon me that bare thee nine months in my womb, and gave thee such three years, and nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and endured the troubles of education.
28 Je t'en conjure, mon enfant, regarde le ciel et la terre et vois tout ce qui est en eux, et sacheque Dieu les a faits de rien et que la race des hommes est faite de la même manière.	28 I beseech thee, my son, look upon the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.
29 Ne crains pas ce bourreau, mais, te montrant digne de tes frères, accepte la mort, afin que jete retrouve avec eux dans la miséricorde."	29 Fear not this tormentor, but, being worthy of thy brethren, take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren.
30 A peine achevait-elle de parler que le jeune homme dit: "Qu'attendez-vous? Je n'obéis pasaux ordres du roi, j'obéis aux ordres de la Loi qui a été donnée à nos pères par Moïse.	30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words, the young man said, Whom wait ye for? I will not obey the king's commandment: but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses.
31 Et toi, qui t'es fait l'inventeur de toute la calamité qui fond sur les Hébreux, tu n'échapperaspas aux mains de Dieu.	31 And thou, that hast been the author of all mischief against the Hebrews, shalt not escape the hands of God.
32 (Nous autres, nous souffrons à cause de nos propres péchés.)	32 For we suffer because of our sins.
33 Si, pour notre châtiment et notre correction, notre Seigneur qui est vivant s'est courroucé unmoment contre nous, il se réconciliera de nouveau avec ses serviteurs.	33 And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastening and correction, yet shall he be at one again with his servants.
34 Mais toi, ô impie et le plus infect de tous les hommes, ne t'élève pas sans raison, te berçant devains espoirs et levant la main contre ses serviteurs,	34 But thou, O godless man, and of all other most wicked, be not lifted up without a cause, nor puffed up with uncertain hopes, lifting up thy hand against the servants of God:
35 car tu n'as pas encore échappé au jugement de Dieu qui peut tout et qui voit tout.	35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgment of Almighty God, who seeth all things.
36 Quant à nos frères, après avoir supporté une douleur passagère, en vue d'une vie intarissable,ils sont tombés pour l'alliance de Dieu, tandis que toi, par le jugement de Dieu, tu porteras le juste châtiment deton orgueil.	36 For our brethren, who now have suffered a short pain, are dead under God's covenant of everlasting life: but thou, through the judgment of God, shalt receive just punishment for thy pride.
37 Pour moi, je livre comme mes frères mon corps et ma vie pour les lois de mes pères,suppliant Dieu d'être bientôt favorable à notre nation et de t'amener par les épreuves et les fléaux à confesserqu'il est le seul Dieu.	37 But I, as my brethren, offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers, beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation; and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess, that he alone is God;
38 Puisse enfin s'arrêter sur moi et sur mes frères la colère du Tout-Puissant justement déchaînéesur toute notre race!"	38 And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty, which is justly brought upon our nation, may cease.
39 Le roi, hors de lui, sévit contre ce dernier encore plus cruellement que contre les autres, lesarcasme lui étant particulièrement amer.	39 Than the king' being in a rage, handed him worse than all the rest, and took it grievously that he was mocked.
40 Ainsi trépassa le jeune homme, sans s'être souillé, et avec une parfaite confiance dans leSeigneur.	40 So this man died undefiled, and put his whole trust in the Lord.
41 Enfin la mère mourut la dernière, après ses fils.	41 Last of all after the sons the mother died.
42 Mais en voilà assez sur la question des repas rituels et des tortures monstrueuses.	42 Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts, and the extreme tortures.
