Deuxième livre des Chroniques 10

JERUSALEM	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c'est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamerroi.	1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.
2 Dès que Jéroboam fils de Nebat en fut informé -- il était en Egypte, où il avait fui le roiSalomon -- il revint d'Egypte.	2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.
3 On le fit appeler et il vint avec tout Israël. Ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:	3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:
4 "Ton père a rendu pénible notre joug, allège maintenant le dur servage de ton père, lalourdeur du joug qu'il nous imposa, et nous te servirons."	4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”
5 Il leur répondit: "Attendez trois jours, puis revenez vers moi." Et le peuple s'en alla.	5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,
6 Le roi Roboam prit conseil des anciens, qui avaient servi son père Salomon de son vivant, etdemanda: "Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?"	6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”
7 Ils lui répondirent: "Si tu te montres bon envers ces gens, si tu leur es bienveillant et leurdonnes de bonnes paroles, alors ils resteront toujours tes serviteurs."	7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”
8 Mais il repoussa le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné et consulta des jeunes gens quil'assistaient, ses compagnons d'enfance.	8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.
9 Il leur demanda: "Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple, qui m'a parlé ainsi:Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?"	9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”
10 Les jeunes gens, ses compagnons d'enfance, lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras aupeuple qui t'a dit: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi allège notre charge, voici ce que tu leur répondras:Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père!	10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.
11 Ainsi mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant, moi, j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; monpère vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes de fer!"	11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”
12 Jéroboam, avec tout le peuple, vint à Roboam le troisième jour, selon cet ordre qu'il avaitdonné: "Revenez vers moi le troisième jour."	12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam rejeta le conseil des anciens	13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.
14 et, suivant le conseil des jeunes, il leur parla ainsi: "Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug,moi j'y ajouterai encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes defer."	14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”
15 Le roi n'écouta donc pas le peuple: c'était une intervention de Dieu, pour accomplir laparole que Yahvé avait dite à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, par le ministère d'Ahiyya de Silo,	15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.
16 et à tous les Israélites, à savoir: que le roi ne les écouterait pas. Ils répliquèrent alors au roi:"Quelle part avons-nous sur David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage sur le fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël!Et maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David."	16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.
17 Quant aux Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.	17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.
18 Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais les Israélites le lapidèrent et ilmourut; alors le roi Roboam se vit contraint de monter sur son char pour fuir à Jérusalem. Et Israël fut séparé dela maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.	18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.
	19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.
