Deuxième livre de Samuel 11

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Au retour de l'année, au temps où les rois se mettent en campagne, David envoya Joab et avec luisa garde et tout Israël: ils massacrèrent les Ammonites et mirent le siège devant Rabba. Cependant David restaità Jérusalem.	1 At the turn of the year, at the time when kings go campaigning, David sent Joab and with him hisguards and al Israel. They massacred the Ammonites and laid siege to Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites. David,however, remained in Jerusalem.
2 Il arriva que, vers le soir, David, s'étant levé de sa couche et se promenant sur la terrasse dupalais, aperçut, de la terrasse, une femme qui se baignait. Cette femme était très belle.	2 It happened towards evening when David had got up from resting and was strol ing on the palace roof,that from the roof he saw a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful.
3 David fit prendre des informations sur cette femme, et on répondit: "Mais c'est Bethsabée, filled'Eliam et femme d'Urie le Hittite!"	3 David made enquiries about this woman and was told, 'Why, that is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam andwife of Uriah the Hittite.'
4 Alors David envoya des émissaires et la fit chercher. Elle vint chez lui et il coucha avec elle,alors qu'elle venait de se purifier de ses règles. Puis elle retourna dans sa maison.	4 David then sent messengers to fetch her. She came to him, and he lay with her, just after she hadpurified herself from her period. She then went home again.
5 La femme conçut et elle envoya dire à David: "Je suis enceinte!"	5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, 'I am pregnant.'
6 Alors David expédia un message à Joab: "Envoie-moi Urie le Hittite", et Joab envoya Urie àDavid.	6 David then sent word to Joab, 'Send me Uriah the Hittite,' whereupon Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 Lorsqu'Urie fut arrivé auprès de lui, David demanda comment allaient Joab et l'armée et laguerre.	7 When Uriah reached him, David asked how Joab was and how the army was and how the war wasgoing.
8 Puis David dit à Urie: "Descends à ta maison et lave-toi les pieds." Urie sortit du palais, suivid'un présent de la table royale.	8 David then said to Uriah, 'Go down to your house and wash your feet.' Uriah left the palace and wasfol owed by a present from the king's table.
9 Mais Urie coucha à la porte du palais avec tous les gardes de son maître et ne descendit pas à samaison.	9 Uriah, however, slept at the palace gate with al his master's bodyguard and did not go down to hishouse.
10 On en informa David: "Urie, lui dit-on, n'est pas descendu à sa maison." David demanda à Urie:"N'arrives-tu pas de voyage? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu à ta maison?"	10 This was reported to David; 'Uriah', they said 'has not gone down to his house.' So David askedUriah, 'Haven't you just arrived from the journey? Why didn't you go down to your house?'
11 Urie répondit à David: "L'arche, Israël et Juda logent sous les huttes, mon maître Joab et lagarde de Monseigneur campent en rase campagne, et moi j'irais à ma maison pour manger et boire et coucheravec ma femme! Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant et que tu vis toi-même, je ne ferai pas une chose pareille!"	11 To which Uriah replied, 'The ark, Israel and Judah are lodged in huts; my master Joab and my lord'sguards are camping in the open. Am I to go to my house, then, and eat and drink and sleep with my wife? AsYahweh lives, and as you yourself live, I shal do no such thing!'
12 Alors David dit à Urie: "Reste encore aujourd'hui ici, et demain je te donnerai congé." Urieresta donc à Jérusalem ce jour-là. Le lendemain,	12 David then said to Uriah, 'Stay on here today; tomorrow I shal send you off.' So Uriah stayed thatday in Jerusalem.
13 David l'invita à manger et à boire en sa présence et il l'enivra. Le soir Urie sortit et s'étendit sursa couche avec les gardes de son maître, mais il ne descendit pas à sa maison.	13 The next day, David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk. In the evening,Uriah went out and bedded down with his master's bodyguard, but did not go down to his house.
14 Le matin suivant, David écrivit une lettre à Joab et la fit porter par Urie.	14 Next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by Uriah.
15 Il écrivait dans la lettre: "Mettez Urie au plus fort de la mêlée et reculez derrière lui: qu'il soitfrappé et qu'il meure."	15 In the letter he wrote, 'Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest and then fal back, so thathe gets wounded and kil ed.'
16 Joab, qui bloquait la ville, plaça Urie à l'endroit où il savait que se trouvaient de vaillantsguerriers.	16 Joab, then besieging the city, stationed Uriah at a point where he knew that there would be toughfighters.
17 Les gens de la ville firent une sortie et attaquèrent Joab. Il y eut des tués dans l'armée, parmi lesgardes de David, et Urie le Hittite mourut aussi.	17 The people of the city sallied out and engaged Joab; there were casualties in the army, amongDavid's guards, and Uriah the Hittite was kil ed as wel .
18 Joab envoya à David un compte-rendu de tous les détails du combat.	18 Joab sent David a ful account of the battle.
19 Il donna cet ordre au messager: "Quand tu auras fini de raconter au roi tous les détails ducombat,	19 To the messenger he gave this order: 'When you have finished tel ing the king al about the battle,
20 si la colère du roi s'élève et qu'il te dise: Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la ville pourlivrer bataille? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'on tire du haut des remparts?	20 if the king's anger is aroused and he says, "Why did you go near the town to give battle? Didn't youknow that they would shoot from the ramparts?
21 Qui a tué Abimélek, le fils de Yerubbaal? N'est-ce pas une femme, qui a lancé une meule surlui, du haut du rempart, et il est mort à Tébèç? Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés du rempart?, tu diras: Tonserviteur Urie le Hittite est mort lui aussi."	21 Who kil ed Abimelech son of Jerubbaal? Wasn't it a woman who dropped a millstone on him from theramparts, causing his death at Thebez? Why did you go near the ramparts?" you are to say, "Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead too." '
22 Le messager partit et, à son arrivée, il rapporta à David tout le message dont Joab l'avait chargé.David s'emporta contre Joab et dit au messager: "Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés du rempart de la ville pourlivrer bataille? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'on tire du haut des remparts? Qui a tué Abimélek, le fils de Yerubbaal?N'est-ce pas une femme qui a jeté une meule sur lui du haut du rempart, et il est mort à Tébèç? Pourquoi vousêtes-vous approchés du rempart?"	22 So the messenger set off and, on his arrival, told David everything that Joab had instructed him tosay. David flew into a rage with Joab and said to the messenger, 'Why did you go near the ramparts? Who kil edAbimelech son of Jerubbaal? Wasn't it a woman who dropped a millstone on him from the ramparts, causing hisdeath at Thebez? Why did you go near the ramparts?'
23 Le messager répondit à David: "C'est que ces gens l'avaient emporté sur nous et étaient sortisvers nous en rase campagne, nous les avons refoulés jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte	23 The messenger replied to David, 'Their men had won an initial advantage and then came out toengage us in the open. We then drove them back into the gateway,
24 mais les archers ont tiré sur tes gardes du haut des remparts, certains des gardes du roi ont périet ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est mort lui aussi."	24 but the archers shot at your retainers from the ramparts; some of the king's retainers lost their lives,and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead too.'
25 Alors David dit au messager: "Voici ce que tu diras à Joab: Que cette affaire ne t'affecte pas:l'épée dévore tantôt celui-ci et tantôt celui-là. Force ton attaque contre la ville et détruis-là. Ainsi tu lui rendrascourage."	25 David then said to the messenger, 'Say this to Joab, "Do not take the matter to heart; the sworddevours now one and now another. Attack the town in greater force and destroy it." That wil encourage him.'
26 Lorsque la femme d'Urie apprit que son époux, Urie, était mort, elle fit le deuil pour son mari.	26 When Uriah's wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 Quand le deuil fut achevé, David l'envoya chercher et la recueillit chez lui, et elle devint safemme. Elle lui enfanta un fils. Mais l'action que David avait commise avait déplut à Yahvé.	27 When the period of mourning was over, David sent to have her brought to his house; she became hiswife and bore him a son. But what David had done displeased Yahweh.
