1 And the men of Ephraim said to him: What is this that thou meanest to do, that thou wouldst not call us when thou wentest to fight against Madian? and they chid him sharply and almost offered violence.	1 Alors les enfants d'Ephraïm lui dirent: Pourquoi nous avez-vous traités ainsi, et pourquoi ne nous avez-vous pas fait avertir lorsque vous alliez combattre les Madianites? Et ils le querellèrent fort aigrement, jusqu'à en venir presque à la violence.
2 And he answered them: What could I have done like to that which you have done? Is not one bunch of grapes of Ephraim better than the vintages of Abiezer?	2 Gédéon leur répondit: Que pouvais-je faire qui égalât ce que vous avez fait? Est-ce qu'une grappe de raisin d'Ephraïm ne vaut pas mieux que toutes les vendanges d'Abiézer?
3 The Lord hath delivered into your bands the princes of Madian, Oreb and Zeb: what could I have done like to what you have done? And when he had said this, their spirit was appeased, with which they swelled against him.	3 Le Seigneur a livré entre vos mains les princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb. Qu'ai-je pu faire qui approchât de ce que vous avez fait? En leur parlant ainsi, il apaisa leur colère, qui était prête à éclater contre lui.
4 And when Gedeon was come to the Jordan, he passed over it with the three hundred men, that were with him: who were so weary that they could not pursue after them that fled.	4 Gédéon, étant venu ensuite sur le bord du Jourdain, le passa avec ses trois cents hommes qui le suivaient, et ils étaient si las, qu'ils ne pouvaient plus poursuivre les fuyards.
5 And he said to the men of Soccoth: Give, I beseech you, bread to the people that is with me, for they are faint: that we may pursue Zebee, and Salmana the kings of Madian.	5 Il dit donc aux habitants de Soccoth: Donnez, je vous prie, du pain à ceux qui sont avec moi, parce qu'ils n'en peuvent plus; afin que nous puissions poursuivre les rois des Madianites, Zébée et Salmana.
6 The princes of Soccoth answered: Peradventure the palms of the hands of Zebee and Salmana are in thy hand, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to thy army.	6 Mais les notables de Soccoth lui répondirent: Peut-être la paume des mains de Zébée et de Salmana est-elle déjà en votre pouvoir; et c'est pour cela que vous demandez que nous donnions du pain à vos gens?
7 And he said to them: When the Lord therefore shall have delivered Zebee and Salmana into my hands, I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the desert.	7 Gédéon leur répondit: Lorsque le Seigneur aura livré entre mes mains Zébée et Salmana, je vous ferai briser le corps avec les épines et les ronces du désert.
8 And going up from thence, he came to Phanuel: and he spoke the like things to the men of that place. And they also answered him, as the men of Soccoth had answered.	8 Etant allé plus loin, il vint à Phanuel et il fit la même demande aux habitants de cette localité, et ils lui firent la même réponse que ceux de Soccoth.
9 He said therefore to them also: When I shall return a conqueror in peace, I will destroy this tower.	9 Gédéon lui répliqua de même: Lorsque je serai revenu en paix et victorieux, j'abattrai cette tour-là.
10 But Zebee and Salmana were resting with all their army. For fifteen thousand men were left of all the troops of the eastern people, and one hundred and twenty thousand warriors that drew the sword, were slain.	10 Or Zébée et Salmana prenaient du repos avec le reste de leur armée; car il n'était resté à ces peuples d'Orient que quinze mille hommes de toutes leurs troupes, cent vingt mille hommes, tous gens de guerre et portant les armes, ayant péri.
11 And Gedeon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents, on the east of Nobe and Jegbaa, and smote the camp of the enemies, who were secure, and suspected no hurt.	11 Gédéon, se dirigeant donc du côté de ceux qui habitaient sous la tente, à l'orient de Nobé et de Jegbaa, défit l'armée des ennemis, qui se croyaient en sûreté, s'imaginant qu'ils n'avaient plus rien à craindre.
12 And Zebee and Salmana fled, and Gedeon pursued and took them, all their host being put in confusion.	12 Zébée et Salmana s'enfuirent aussitôt, toutes leurs troupes étant en désordre; Gédéon les poursuivit et les prit tous deux.
13 And returning from the battle before the sun rising,	13 Etant revenu du combat avant le lever du soleil,
14 He took a boy of the men of Soccoth: and he asked him the names of the princes and ancients of Soccoth, and he described unto him seventy-seven men.	14 il prit un jeune homme de Soccoth, et lui demanda les noms des notables et des anciens de Soccoth; cet homme lui en marqua soixante-dix-sept.
15 And he came to Soccoth and said to them: Behold Zebee and Salmana, concerning whom you upbraided me, saying: Peradventure the hands of Zebee and Salmana, are in thy hands, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to the men that are weary and faint.	15 Gédéon vint ensuite à Soccoth et dit aux notables: Voici Zébée et Salmana au sujet desquels vous m'avez insulté, en disant: Peut-être les mains de Zébée et de Salmana sont-elles en votre pouvoir, et c'est pour cela que vous demandez que nous donnions du pain à vos gens, qui sont si las qu'ils n'en peuvent plus.
16 So he took the ancients of the city and thorns and briers of the desert, and tore them with the same, and cut in pieces the men of Soccoth.	16 Il prit donc les anciens de la ville, et il leur brisa le corps avec les épines et les ronces du désert.
17 And he demolished the tower of Phanuel, and slew the men of the city.	17 Il abattit aussi la tour de Phanuel, après avoir tué les habitants de la ville.
18 And he said to Zebee and Salmana: What manner of men were they whom you slew in Thabor? They answered: They were like thee, and one of them as the son of a king.	18 Il dit ensuite à Zébée et à Salmana: Comment étaient faits ceux que vous avez tués au mont Thabor? Ils lui répondirent: Ils étaient comme vous, et l'un d'eux paraissait un fils de roi.
19 He answered them: They were my brethren, the sons of my mother. As the Lord liveth, if you had saved them, I would not kill you.	19 Gédéon ajouta: C'étaient mes frères et les enfants de ma mère. Vive le Seigneur! si vous leur aviez sauvé la vie, je ne vous tuerais pas maintenant.
20 And he said to Jether his eldest son: Arise, and slay them. But he drew not his sword: for he was afraid, being but yet a boy.	20 Il dit ensuite à Jéther, son fils aîné: Allez, tuez-les. Mais Jéther ne tira point son épée, parce qu'il était effrayé, n'étant encore qu'un enfant.
21 And Zebee and Salmana said: Do thou rise, and run upon us: because the strength of a man is according to his age: Gedeon rose up and slew Zebee and Salmana: and he took the ornaments and bosses, with which the necks of the camels of kings are wont to be adorned.	21 Zébée et Salmana dirent donc à Gédéon: Venez vous-même, et tuez-nous; car c'est l'âge qui rend l'homme fort. Gédéon, s'étant avancé, tua Zébée et Salmana. Il prit ensuite tous les ornements et les bossettes qu'on met d'ordinaire au cou des chameaux des rois.
22 And all the men of Israel said to Gedeon: Rule thou over us and thy son, and thy son's son: because thou hast delivered us from the hand of Madian.	22 Alors tous les enfants d'Israël dirent à Gédéon: Soyez notre prince et commandez-nous, vous, votre fils, et le fils de votre fils, parce que vous nous avez délivrés de la main des Madianites.
23 And he said to them: I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you, but the Lord shall rule over you.	23 Gédéon leur répondit: Je ne serai point votre prince, et je ne vous commanderai point, ni moi ni mes fils; mais c'est le Seigneur qui sera votre prince, et qui vous commandera.
24 And he said to them: I desire one request of you: Give me the earlets of your spoils. For the Ismaelites were accustomed to wear golden earlets.	24 Et il ajouta: Je ne vous demande qu'une chose. Donnez-moi les pendants d'oreilles que vous avez eus de votre butin. Car les Ismaélites avaient coutume de porter des pendants d'oreilles d'or.
25 They answered: We will give them most willingly. And spreading a mantle on the ground, they cast upon it the earlets of the spoils.	25 Ils lui répondirent: Nous vous les donnerons très volontiers. Et étendant un manteau â terre, ils y jetèrent les pendants d'oreilles qu'ils avaient eus de leur butin.
26 And the weight of the earlets that he requested, was a thousand seven hundred sicles of gold, besides the ornaments, and jewels, and purple raiment which the kings of Madian were went to use, and besides the golden chains that were about the camels' necks.	26 Ces pendants d'oreilles que Gédéon avait demandés pesaient mille sept cents sicles d'or, sans compter les ornements, les colliers précieux et les vêtements d'êcarlate que les rois de Madian avaient coutume de porter, et sans compter les colliers d'or des chameaux.
27 And Gedeon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city Ephra. And all Israel committed fornication with it, and it became a ruin to Gedeon and to all his house.	27 Gédéon fit de toutes ces choses précieuses un éphod, qu'il mit dans sa ville d'Ephra. Et cette ephod fit tomber les Israélites dans la prostitution de l'idolatrie, et causa la ruine de Gédéon et de toute sa maison.
28 But Madian was humbled before the children of Israel, neither could they any more lift up their beads: but the land rested for forty years, while Gedeon presided.	28 Les Madianites furent donc humiliés devant les enfants d'Israël, et ils ne purent plus lever la tête; mais tout le pays demeura en paix pendant les quarante années du gouvernement de Gédéon.
29 So Jerobaal the son of Joas went, and dwelt in his own house.	29 Après cela Jérobaal, fils de Joas, s'en retourna et demeura dans sa maison;
30 And he had seventy sons, who came out of his thigh, for he had many wives.	30 et il eut soixante-dix fils issus de lui, car il avait plusieurs femmes.
31 And his concubine, that he had in Sichem, bore him a son, whose name was Abimelech.	31 Et sa concubine qu'il avait à Sichem lui donna un fils nommé Abimélech.
32 And Gedeon the son of Joas died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father in Ephra of the family of Ezri.	32 Gédéon, fils de Jonas, mourut enfin dans une heureuse vieillesse, et il fut enseleli dans le sépulcre de Joas, son père, à Ephra, qui appartenait à la famille d'Ezri.
33 But after Gedeon was dead, the children of Israel turned again, and committed fornication with Baalim. And they made a covenant with Baal, that he should be their god:	33 Après la mort de Gédéon, les enfants d'Israël se détournèrent du culte de Dieu, et ils se prostituèrent à l'idolâtrie des Baals. Ils firent alliance avec Baal, afin qu'il fût leur dieu;
34 And they remembered not the Lord their God, who delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies round about:	34 et ils oublièrent le Seigneur leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés des mains de tous leurs ennemis dont ils étaient environnés.
35 Neither did they shew mercy to the house of Jerobaal Gedeon, according to all the good things he had done to Israel.	35 Et ils n'usèrent point de miséricorde envers la maison de Gédéon Jérobaal, pour reconnaître tout le bien qu'il avait fait à Israël.
