DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ, is born of God. And every one that loveth him who begot, loveth him also who is born of him.1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also) the one begotten by him.
In this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God, and keep his commandments.2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments.
For this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not heavy.3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,
For whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory which overcometh the world, our faith.4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?5 Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is he that came by water and blood, Jesus Christ: not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit which testifieth, that Christ is the truth.6 This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.
And there are three who give testimony in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost. And these three are one.7 So there are three that testify,
And there are three that give testimony on earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three are one.8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.
If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony of God, which is greater, because he hath testified of his Son.9 If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.
He that believeth in the Son of God, hath the testimony of God in himself. He that believeth not the Son, maketh him a liar: because he believeth not in the testimony which God hath testified of his Son.10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.
And this is the testimony, that God hath given to us eternal life. And this life is in his Son.11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son, hath life. He that hath not the Son, hath not life.12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.
These things I write to you, that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.13 I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.
And this is the confidence which we have towards him: That, whatsoever we shall ask according to his will, he heareth us.14 And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And we know that he heareth us whatsoever we ask: we know that we have the petitions which we request of him.15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours.
He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death, let him ask, and life shall be given to him, who sinneth not to death. There is a sin unto death: for that I say not that any man ask.16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray.
All iniquity is sin. And there is a sin unto death.17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.
We know that whosoever is born of God, sinneth not: but the generation of God preserveth him, and the wicked one toucheth him not.18 We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world is seated in wickedness.19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
And we know that the Son of God is come: and he hath given us understanding that we may know the true God, and may be in his true Son. This is the true God and life eternal.20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.21 Children, be on your guard against idols.
