1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with respect of persons.	1 Fratelli miei, non vogliate avere una fede nel Signore nostro Gesù Cristo glorificato mista a indebite discriminazioni nei riguardi del vostro prossimo.
2 For if there shall come into your assembly a man having a golden ring, in fine apparel, and there shall come in also a poor man in mean attire,	2 Difatti, se per esempio entra nella vostra assemblea, da una parte un signore con un anello d’oro al dito, in uno splendido abbigliamento, e dall’altra un povero con l’abito sporco,
3 And you have respect to him that is clothed with the fine apparel, and shall say to him: Sit thou here well; but say to the poor man: Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool:	3 e voi guardate con compiacenza quello dalla veste splendida e dite: «Siedi qui comodamente!», mentre al povero dite: «Tu sta lì in piedi!» oppure: «Siedi sotto lo sgabello dei miei piedi!»,
4 Do you not judge within yourselves, and are become judges of unjust thoughts?	4 non ammettete forse ingiuste distinzioni e diventate giudici dai giudizi iniqui?
5 Hearken, my dearest brethren: hath not God chosen the poor in this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him?	5 Ascoltate, fratelli miei carissimi. Dio non scelse forse quelli che per il mondo son poveri per farli ricchi nella fede ed eredi del regno promesso a quanti lo amano?
6 But you have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you by might? and do not they draw you before the judgment seats?	6 Ma voi disonoraste il povero! Non sono i ricchi che vi opprimono, che vi trascinano nei tribunali,
7 Do not they blaspheme the good name that is invoked upon you?	7 che bestemmiano il bel nome che fu invocato su di voi?
8 If then you fulfil the royal law, according to the scriptures, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; you do well.	8 Se adempite in pienezza la legge regale secondo la Scrittura: Amerai il prossimo tuo come te stesso, fate certo bene.
9 But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, being reproved by the law as transgressors.	9 Ma se fate discriminazioni, commettete peccato e siete accusati dalla legge quali trasgressori.
10 And whosoever shall keep the whole law, but offend in one point, is become guilty of all.	10 Poiché chi osserva tutta intera la legge, ma ne viola un solo precetto, diventa reo di tutti.
11 For he that said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. Now if thou do not commit adultery, but shalt kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.	11 Colui infatti che disse: Non commettere adulterio, disse anche: Non ammazzare. Ora se tu non commetti adulterio, ma ammazzi, diventi trasgressore della legge.
12 So speak ye, and so do, as being to be judged by the law of liberty.	12 Così dunque parlate e agite, quali persone che devono essere giudicate per mezzo di una legge di libertà.
13 For judgment without mercy to him that hath not done mercy. And mercy exalteth itself above judgment.	13 Sarà infatti senza misericordia il giudizio di chi non usò misericordia. La misericordia invece trionfa del giudizio.
14 What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him?	14 A che servirebbe, fratelli miei, se uno dicesse d’avere la fede, ma non avesse le opere? Potrebbe forse quella fede salvarlo?
15 And if a brother or sister be naked, and want daily food:	15 Se un fratello o una sorella si trovassero nudi e mancanti del cibo quotidiano,
16 And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit?	16 e uno di voi dicesse loro: «Anate in pace, riscaldatevi e saziatevi», ma non desse loro il necessario per il corpo, a che servirebbe?
17 So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself.	17 Così pure la fede, se non ha opere, è per se stessa morta.
18 But some man will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without works; and I will shew thee, by works, my faith.	18 Anzi, dirà qualcuno: «Chi ha la fede, chi invece ha le opere». Mostrami la tua fede senza le opere, mentre io ti mostrerò dalle opere mie la fede!
19 Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble.	19 Tu credi che c’è un Dio solo? Fai bene! Ma anche i demoni lo credono, eppure ne hanno orrore.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?	20 Ma vuoi capire, o sciocco, che la fede senza le opere è infruttifera?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar?	21 Abramo, padre nostro, non fu giustificato forse dalle opere, avendo offerto il figlio suo Isacco sull’altare?
22 Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect?	22 Vedi come la fede operava assieme alle opere sue e come per mezzo delle opere quella fede fu resa perfetta?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God.	23 Solo così si compì la Scrittura che dice: Credette Abramo a Dio e gli fu messo in conto come giustizia e amico di Dio fu chiamato.
24 Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only?	24 Voi vedete dunque, come l’uomo è giustificato per le opere e non per la fede soltanto.
25 And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way?	25 Allo stesso modo Raab, la prostituta, non venne forse giustificata mediante le opere, per aver ospitato gli esploratori e averli rimandati per altra strada?
26 For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.	26 Come il corpo senza spirito è morto, così pure la fede senza opere è morta.
