1 Then the princes of the families of Levi came to Eleazar the priest, and to Josue the son of Nun, and to the princes of the kindreds of all the tribes of the children of Israel:1 The heads of families of the Levites then came to the priest, Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun and theheads of families of the tribes of Israel-
2 And they spoke to them in Silo in the land of Chanaan, and said: The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, that cities should be given us to dwell in, and their suburbs to feed our cattle.2 they were then at Shiloh in Canaan. They said to them, 'Through Moses, Yahweh ordered us to begiven towns to live in, with their pasture lands for our livestock.'
3 And the children of Israel gave out of their possessions according to the commandment of the Lord, cities and their suburbs.3 In compliance with Yahweh's order, the Israelites consequently and from their own heritage gave theLevites the fol owing towns with their pasture lands:
4 And the lot came out for the family of Caath of the children of Aaron the priest out of the tribes of Juda, and of Simeon, and of Benjamin, thirteen cities.4 Lots were cast for the clans of the Kohathites: to those Levites who were sons of Aaron the priest, felthirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin;
5 And to the rest of the children of Caath, that is, to the Levites, who remained, out of the tribes of Ephraim, and of Dan, and the half tribe of Manasses, ten cities.5 to the other sons of Kohath, by clans,
6 And the lot came out to the children of Gerson, that they should take of the tribes of Issachar and of Aser and of Nephtali, and of the half tribe of Manasses in Basan, thirteen cities.6 fel ten towns from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. To the sons of Gershon,by clans, fel thirteen towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh inBashan.
7 And to the sons of Merari by their kindreds, of the tribes of Ruben and or Cad and of Zabulon, twelve cities.7 To the sons of Merari, by clans, fel twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
8 And the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities and their suburbs, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, giving to every one by lot.8 The Israelites assigned these towns and their pasture lands to the Levites by lot, as Yahweh hadordered through Moses.
9 Of the tribes of the children of Juda and of Simeon Josue gave cities: whose names are these,9 From the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Simeon, they gave the towns named below.
10 To the sons of Aaron, of the families of Caath of the race of Levi (for the first lot came out for them)10 The first portion was for the sons of Aaron, belonging to the clans of the Kohathites, to the sons ofLevi, since the first lot was theirs.
11 The city of Arbe the father of Enac, which is called Hebron, in the mountain of Juda, and the suburbs thereof round about.11 They gave them Kiriath-Arba, Anak's father's town -- now Hebron -- in the highlands of Judah, with itssurrounding pasture lands.
12 But the fields and the villages thereof he had given to Caleb the son of Jephone for his possession.12 The fields and vil ages of this town, however, they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his property.
13 He gave therefore to the children of Aaron the priest, Hebron a city of refuge, and the suburbs thereof: and Lobna with the suburbs thereof,13 To the sons of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with itspasture lands, as wel as Libnah with its pasture lands,
14 And Jether and Estemo,14 Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,
15 And Holon, and Dabir,15 Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands,
16 And Ain, and Jeta, and Bethsames, with their suburbs : nine cities out of the two tribes, as hath been said.16 Ashan with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, and Beth-Shemesh with its pasture lands:nine towns taken from these two tribes;
17 And out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, Gabaon, and Gabae,17 and, from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,
18 And Anathoth and Almon, with their suburbs: four cities.18 Anathoth with its pasture lands and Almon with its pasture lands: four towns.
19 All the cities together of the children of Aaron the priest, were thirteen, with their suburbs.19 Total number of towns for the priests, the sons of Aaron: thirteen towns with their pasture lands.
20 And to the rest of the families of the children of Caath of the race of Levi was given this possession.20 As regards the clans of the sons of Kohath, those Levites stil left of the sons of Kohath, the towns oftheir lot were taken from the tribe of Ephraim.
21 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Sichem one of the cities of refuge, with the suburbs thereof in mount Ephraim, and Cater,21 They were given Shechem, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with its pasture lands, in thehighlands of Ephraim, as wel as Gezer with its pasture lands,
22 And Cibsaim, and Beth-horon, with their suburbs, four cities.22 Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Beth-Horon with its pasture lands: four towns;
23 And of the tribe of Dan, Eltheco and Gabathon,23 from the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,
24 And Aialon and Gethremmon, with their suburbs, four cities.24 Aijalon with its pasture lands and Gath-Rimmon with its pasture lands: four towns;
25 And of the half tribe of Manasses, Thanac and Gethremmon, with their suburbs, two cities.25 and, from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pasture lands and Jibleam with its pasturelands: two towns.
26 All the cities were ten, with their suburbs, which were given to the children of Caath, of the inferior degree.26 In al : ten towns with their pasture lands for the remaining clans of the sons of Kohath.
27 To the children of Gerson also of the race of Levi out of the half tribe of Manasses, Gaulon in Basan, one of the cities of refuge, and Bosra, with their suburbs, two cities.27 To the sons of Gershon, of the levitical clans, were given: from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan inBashan, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with its pasture lands, and Ashtaroth with its pasture lands --two towns;
28 And of the tribe of Issachar, Cesion, and Dabereth,28 from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its pasture lands, Dobrath with its pasture lands,
29 And Jaramoth, and Engannim, with their suburbs, four cities.29 Jarmuth with its pasture lands and En-Gannim with its pasture lands -- four towns;
30 And of the tribe of Aser, Masal and Abdon,30 from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,
31 ,31And Helcath, and Rohob, with their suburbs, four cities.31 Helkath with its pasture lands and Rehob with its pasture lands -- four towns;
32 Of the tribe also of Nephtali, Cedes in Galilee, one of the cities of refuge: and Hammoth Dor, and Carthan, with their suburbs, three cities.32 and, from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, a city of refuge for those who had kil ed, with itspasture lands, Hammoth-Dor with its pasture lands and Kartan with its pasture lands -- three towns.
33 All the cities of the families of Gerson, were thirteen, with their suburbs.33 Total number of towns of the Gershonites, by clans: thirteen towns with their pasture lands.
34 And to the children of Merari, Levites of the inferior degree, by their families were given of the tribe of Zabulon, Jecnam and Cartha,34 To the clans of the sons of Merari, the remainder of the Levites, fel : from the tribe of Zebulun,Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,
35 And Damna and Naalol, four cities with their suburbs;35 Rimmon with its pasture lands and Nahalal with its pasture lands -- four towns;
36 Of the tribe of Ruben beyond the Jordan over against Jericho, Bosor in the wilderness, one of the cities of refuge, Miser and Jaser and Jethson and Mephaath, four cities with their suburbs.36 on the other side of the Jordan opposite Jericho, from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the desert, on thetableland, a city of refuge for those who had killed, with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands,
37 Of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Galaad, one of the cities of refuge, and Manaim and Hesebon and Jaser, four cities with their suburbs.37 Kedemoth with its pasture lands and Mephaath with its pasture lands -- four towns;
38 All the cities of the children of Merari by their families and kindreds, were twelve.38 and, from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for those who had killed, with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasture lands,
39 So all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight,39 Heshbon with its pasture lands and Jazer with its pasture lands -- four towns.
40 With their suburbs, each distributed by the families.40 Total number of towns forming the lot of the sons of Merari by clans, of the remaining levitical clans:twelve towns.
41 And the Lord God gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers: and they possessed it and dwelt in it.41 The total number of towns for the Levites in Israelite territory was forty-eight towns with their pasture lands.
42 And he gave them peace from all nations round about: and none of their enemies durst stand against them, but were brought under their dominion.42 These towns consisted in each case of the town itself and the pasture land round it. This was thecase with all the towns.
43 Not so much as one word, which he had promised to perform unto them, was made void, but all came to pass.43 This was how Yahweh gave the Israelites the entire country which he had sworn to give to theirancestors. They took possession of it and settled in it.
44 Yahweh granted them tranquil ity on all their frontiers just as he had sworn to their ancestors and, ofal their enemies, not one succeeded in resisting them. Yahweh put al their enemies at their mercy.
45 Of al the promises that Yahweh had made to the House of Israel, not one failed; al were fulfilled.
