DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And the apostles and brethren, who were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.1 The apostles and the brothers in Judaea heard that gentiles too had accepted the word of God,
And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,2 and when Peter came up to Jerusalem the circumcised believers protested to him
Saying: Why didst thou go in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them?3 and said, 'So you have been visiting the uncircumcised and eating with them!'
But Peter began and declared to them the matter in order, saying:4 Peter in reply gave them the details point by point,
I was in the city of Joppe praying, and I saw in an ecstasy of mind a vision, a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners, and it came even unto me.5 'One day, when I was in the town of Jaffa,' he began, 'I fell into a trance as I was praying and had avision of something like a big sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners. This sheet came right downbeside me.
Into which looking, I considered, and saw fourfooted creatures of the earth, and beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air:6 I looked careful y into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds ofheaven.
And I heard also a voice saying to me: Arise, Peter; kill and eat.7 Then I heard a voice that said to me, "Now, Peter, kill and eat!"
And I said: Not so, Lord; for nothing common or unclean hath ever entered into my mouth.8 But I answered, "Certainly not, Lord; nothing profane or unclean has ever crossed my lips."
And the voice answered again from heaven: What God hath made clean, do not thou call common.9 And a second time the voice spoke from heaven, "What God has made clean, you have no right to callprofane."
And this was done three times: and all were taken up again into heaven.10 This was repeated three times, before the whole of it was drawn up to heaven again.
And behold, immediately there were three men come to the house wherein I was, sent to me from Caesarea.11 'Just at that moment, three men stopped outside the house where we were staying; they had beensent from Caesarea to fetch me,
And the Spirit said to me, that I should go with them, nothing doubting. And these six brethren went with me also: and we entered into the man's house.12 and the Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going back with them. The six brothers here camewith me as wel , and we entered the man's house.
And he told us how he had seen an angel in his house, standing, and saying to him: Send to Joppe, and call hither Simon, who is surnamed Peter,13 He told us he had seen an angel standing in his house who said, "Send to Jaffa and fetch Simonknown as Peter;
Who shall speak to thee words, whereby thou shalt be saved, and all thy house.14 he has a message for you that wil save you and your entire household."
And when I had begun to speak, the Holy Ghost fell upon them, as upon us also in the beginning.15 'I had scarcely begun to speak when the Holy Spirit came down on them in the same way as it cameon us at the beginning,
And I remembered the word of the Lord, how that he said: John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.16 and I remembered that the Lord had said, "John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with theHoly Spirit."
If then God gave them the same grace, as to us also who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ; who was I, that could withstand God?17 I realised then that God was giving them the identical gift he gave to us when we believed in the LordJesus Christ; and who was I to stand in God's way?'
Having heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying: God then hath also to the Gentiles given repentance unto life.18 This account satisfied them, and they gave glory to God, saying, 'God has clearly granted to thegentiles too the repentance that leads to life.'
Now they who had been dispersed by the persecution that arose on occasion of Stephen, went about as far as Phenice and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none, but to the Jews only.19 Those who had scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen travel ed as far asPhoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, but they proclaimed the message only to Jews.
But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were entered into Antioch, spoke also to the Greeks, preaching the Lord Jesus.20 Some of them, however, who came from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch where they startedpreaching also to the Greeks, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus to them.
And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believing, were converted to the Lord.21 The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord.
And the tidings came to the ears of the church that was at Jerusalem, touching these things: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch.22 The news of them came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem and they sent Barnabas out toAntioch.
Who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, rejoiced: and he exhorted them all with purpose of heart to continue in the Lord.23 There he was glad to see for himself that God had given grace, and he urged them all to remainfaithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion;
For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord.24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people werewon over to the Lord.
And Barnabas went to Tarsus to seek Saul: whom, when he had found, he brought to Antioch.25 Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul,
And they conversed there in the church a whole year; and they taught a great multitude, so that at Antioch the disciples were first named Christians.26 and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. And it happened that they stayed together in thatchurch a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first cal ed'Christians'.
And in these days there came prophets from Jerusalem to Antioch:27 While they were there some prophets came down to Antioch from Jerusalem,
And one of them named Agabus, rising up, signified by the Spirit, that there should be a great famine over the whole world, which came to pass under Claudius.28 and one of them whose name was Agabus, seized by the Spirit, stood up and predicted that a severeand universal famine was going to happen. This in fact happened while Claudius was emperor.
And the disciples, every man according to his ability, purposed to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judea:29 The disciples decided to send relief, each to contribute what he could afford, to the brothers living inJudaea.
Which also they did, sending it to the ancients, by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.30 They did this and delivered their contributions to the elders through the agency of Barnabas and Saul.
