¹ And the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate.	¹ E alzatasi tutta la loro numerosa adunanza, lo condussero a Pilato.
² And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.	² Si misero allora ad accusarlo, dicendo: «Abbiamo trovato costui che sovvertiva la nostra nazione e proibiva di pagare i tributi a Cesare, e diceva di essere il Messia re».
³ And Pilate asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, said: Thou sayest it.	³ Pilato lo interrogò: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?» Gli rispose Gesù: «Tu lo dici».
⁴ And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this man.	⁴ Pilato, allora, disse ai gran sacerdoti e alle folle: «Non trovo nulla di colpevole in quest'uomo».
⁵ But they were more earnest, saying: He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.	⁵ Ma quelli insistevano: «Solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dalla Galilea, dove ha cominciato, fino a qui».
⁶ But Pilate hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee?	⁶ Udito ciò, Pilato chiese se quell’uomo fosse galileo;
⁷ And when he understood that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was also himself at Jerusalem, in those days.	⁷ e, saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò a Erode, che in quei giorni si trovava anch’egli a Gerusalemme.
⁸ And Herod, seeing Jesus, was very glad; for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him.	⁸ Erode, alla vista di Gesù si rallegrò molto, perché da gran tempo desiderava vederlo, per ciò che aveva sentito dire di lui, e sperava di vedergli fare qualche miracolo.
⁹ And he questioned him in many words. But he answered him nothing.	⁹ Gli rivolgeva molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.
¹⁰ And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him.	¹⁰ Intanto, i gran sacerdoti e gli scribi stavano lì ad accusarlo con veemenza.
¹¹ And Herod with his army set him at nought, and mocked him, putting on him a white garment, and sent him back to Pilate.	¹¹ Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo vilipese e lo burlò, vestendolo con una veste smagliante, e lo mandò a Pilato.
¹² And Herod and Pilate were made friends, that same day; for before they were enemies one to another.	¹² E quel giorno Erode e Pilato divennero amici; perché prima C’era inimicizia tra loro.
¹³ And Pilate, calling together the chief priests, and the magistrates, and the people,	¹³ Pilato, poi, convocati i gran sacerdoti, i notabili e il popolo,
¹⁴ Said to them: You have presented unto me this man, as one that perverteth the people; and behold I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man, in those things wherein you accuse him.	¹⁴ disse loro: «Mi avete condotto quest'uomo come un sobillatore del popolo, ed ecco io, esaminandolo dinanzi a voi, non ho trovato in quest’uomo nessuna delle colpe di cui lo accusate.
¹⁵ No, nor Herod neither. For I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done to him.	¹⁵ Ma neppure Erode: difatti, ce lo ha rimandato. Insomma, nulla è stato da lui commesso che sia degno di morte.
¹⁶ I will chastise him therefore, and release him.	¹⁶ Castigatolo, dunque, lo rilascerò».
¹⁷ Now of necessity he was to release unto them one upon the feast day.	¹⁷ Ora, in occasione della festa, Pilato era tenuto a rilasciare loro uno.
¹⁸ But the whole multitude together cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:	¹⁸ Tutta la folla insieme gridò: «A morte costui! Rilasciaci Barabba!»
¹⁹ Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for a murder, was cast into prison.	¹⁹ il quale era stato messo in prigione per una rivolta avvenuta nella città e un omicidio.
²⁰ And Pilate again spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.	²⁰ Pilato, avendo l’intenzione di liberare Gesù, parlò loro di nuovo.
²¹ But they cried again, saying: Crucify him, crucify him.	²¹ Ma quelli continuavano a gridare:
²² And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will chastise him therefore, and let him go.	²² «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!» E per la terza volta Pilato disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato in lui nulla che sia degno di morte; lo castigherò, dunque, e lo rilascerò».
²³ But they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified; and their voices prevailed.	²³ Ma quelli insistevano nel chiedere con alte grida che fosse crocifisso; e le loro voci si facevano più forti.
²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.	²⁴ Allora Pilato deliberò che fosse fatto ciò che chiedevano:
²⁵ And he released unto them him who for murder and sedition, had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.	²⁵ rilasciò quello che era in carcere per rivolta e omicidio, e che avevano richiesto, e consegnò Gesù alla loro volontà.
²⁶ And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus.	²⁶ Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirene che veniva dalla campagna, e lo caricarono della croce perché la portasse dietro a Gesù.
²⁷ And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him.	²⁷ Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che facevano cordoglio e lamento su di lui.
²⁸ But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.	²⁸ Ma, volgendosi ad esse, Gesù disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me; ma su voi stesse piangete e sui vostri figli,
²⁹ For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck.	²⁹ perché, ecco, verranno giorni in cui si dirà: “Beate le sterili e i grembi che non han generato e le mammelle che non hanno nutrito”.
³⁰ Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us.	³⁰ Allora cominceranno a dire ai monti: “Cadete su di noi!” e alle colline:
³¹ For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry?	³¹ “Copriteci!” perché se si tratta così il legno verde, che ne sarà del secco?»
³² And there were also two other malefactors led with him to be put to death.	³² Ed erano condotti anche altri due malfattori, per essere giustiziati con lui.
³³ And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.	³³ E, come vennero al luogo chiamato Cranio, quivi crocifissero lui e i malfattori, l’uno a destra e l’altro a sinistra.
³⁴ And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.	³⁴ E Gesù diceva: «Padre, perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno». Dividendosi, poi, le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.
³⁵ And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God.	³⁵ E il popolo stava a guardare; e anche i notabili lo beffeggiavano dicendo: «Ha salvato altri, salvi se stesso se costui è il Messia, l’eletto di Dio!»
³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,	³⁶ Anche i soldati lo deridevano: si avvicinavano, gli porgevano aceto e dicevano:
³⁷ And saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.	³⁷ «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei salva te stesso!»
³⁸ And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	³⁸ C'era anche, sopra di lui, una scritta in caratteri greci, latini ed ebraici: «Questi è il re dei Giudei».
³⁹ And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.	³⁹ Uno dei malfattori appesi lo insultava dicendo: «Non sei tu il Messia? Salva te stesso e noi!»
⁴⁰ But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art condemned under the same condemnation?	⁴⁰ Ma l’altro lo rimproverava e diceva: «Neppure temi Dio, tu che subisci la stessa condanna?
⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil.	⁴¹ Per noi è giustizia, perché riceviamo quel che meritano le nostre azioni, ma costui non ha fatto nulla di male».
⁴² And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom.	⁴² E diceva: «Gesù, ricordati di me quando verrai nella tua regale maestà».
⁴³ And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.	⁴³ E Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico: oggi sarai con me nel paradiso».
⁴⁴ And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.	⁴⁴ Era già circa l’ora sesta quando venne la tenebra su tutta la terra fino all’ora nona, essendosi il sole eclissato.
⁴⁵ And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.	⁴⁵ E il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.
⁴⁶ And Jesus crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost.	⁴⁶ E Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: «Padre, nelle tue mani rimetto lo spirito mio». Ciò detto, spirò.
⁴⁷ Now the centurion, seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man.	⁴⁷ Alla vista di ciò che era accaduto, il centurione glorificò Dio dicendo: «Realmente questo uomo era giusto!»
⁴⁸ And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts.	⁴⁸ E tutte le folle accorse a quello spettacolo, alla vista di ciò che era accaduto, se ne ritornarono battendosi il petto.
⁴⁹ And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.	⁴⁹ Tutti i conoscenti di Gesù stavano a distanza, come anche le donne che lo avevano accompagnato fin dalla Galilea, osservando queste cose.
⁵⁰ And behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and just man,	⁵⁰ Ed ecco un uomo di nome Giuseppe, che era membro del Consiglio, uomo retto e giusto, —
⁵¹ (The same had not consented to their counsel and doings;) of Arimathea, a city of Judea; who also himself looked for the kingdom of God.	⁵¹ costui non si era associato a ciò che gli altri avevano deliberato e fatto — nativo di Arimathea, città dei Giudei, che aspettava il regno di Dio.
⁵² This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.	⁵² Costui, presentatosi a Pilato, gli chiese il corpo di Gesù;
⁵³ And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid.	⁵³ lo calò giù, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo depose in un sepolcro tagliato nella roccia, nel quale nessuno ancora era stato deposto.
⁵⁴ And it was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on.	⁵⁴ Era il giorno della Preparazione è sorgeva il sabato.
⁵⁵ And the women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.	⁵⁵ Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea avevano seguito Giuseppe e osservarono il sepolcro e come era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù.
⁵⁶ And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.	⁵⁶ Poi se ne tornarono e prepararono aromi ed unguenti, e nel giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo, secondo il precetto.
