DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And there were present, at that very time, some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.1 It was just about this time that some people arrived and told him about the Galileans whose bloodPilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them,
And he answering, said to them: Think you that these Galileans were sinners above all the men of Galilee, because they suffered such things?2 'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than any others, that this should havehappened to them?
No, I say to you: but unless you shall do penance, you shall all likewise perish.3 They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.
Or those eighteen upon whom the tower fell in Siloe, and slew them: think you, that they also were debtors above all the men that dwelt in Jerusalem?4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fel , kil ing them al ? Do you suppose that they weremore guilty than al the other people living in Jerusalem?
No, I say to you; but except you do penance, you shall all likewise perish.5 They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.'
He spoke also this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none.6 He told this parable, 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on itbut found none.
And he said to the dresser of the vineyard: Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it done therefore: why cumbereth it the ground?7 He said to his vinedresser, "For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree andfinding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?"
But he answering, said to him: Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig about it, and dung it.8 "Sir," the man replied, "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it:
And if happily it bear fruit: but if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.9 it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down." '
And he was teaching in their synagogue on their sabbath.10 One Sabbath day he was teaching in one of the synagogues,
And behold there was a woman, who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years: and she was bowed together, neither could she look upwards at all.11 and there before him was a woman who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit thatcrippled her; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright.
Whom when Jesus saw, he called her unto him, and said to her: Woman, thou art delivered from thy infirmity.12 When Jesus saw her he cal ed her over and said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability,'
And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.13 and he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God.
And the ruler of the synagogue (being angry that Jesus had healed on the sabbath) answering, said to the multitude: Six days there are wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come, and be healed; and not on the sabbath day.14 But the president of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and headdressed all those present saying, 'There are six days when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one ofthose days and not on the Sabbath.'
And the Lord answering him, said: Ye hypocrites, doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead them to water?15 But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or hisdonkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering?
And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?16 And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years -- was itnot right to untie this bond on the Sabbath day?'
And when he said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the things that were gloriously done by him.17 When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and al the people were overjoyedat al the wonders he worked.
He said therefore: To what is the kingdom of God like, and whereunto shall I resemble it?18 He went on to say, 'What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with?
It is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden, and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air lodged in the branches thereof.19 It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, andthe birds of the air sheltered in its branches.'
And again he said: Whereunto shall I esteem the kingdom of God to be like?20 Again he said, 'What shall I compare the kingdom of God with?
It is like to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.21 It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour til it was leavened althrough.'
And he went through the cities and towns teaching, and making his journey to Jerusalem.22 Through towns and vil ages he went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem.
And a certain man said to him: Lord, are they few that are saved? But he said to them:23 Someone said to him, 'Sir, wil there be only a few saved?' He said to them,
Strive to enter by the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, shall seek to enter, and shall not be able.24 'Try your hardest to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many wil try to enter and wil notsucceed.
But when the master of the house shall be gone in, and shall shut the door, you shall begin to stand without, and knock at the door, saying: Lord, open to us. And he answering, shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are.25 'Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself standingoutside knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us," but he will answer, "I do not know where you comefrom."
Then you shall begin to say: We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.26 Then you wil start saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets,"
And he shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are: depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.27 but he wil reply, "I do not know where you come from; away from me, al evil doers!"
There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.28 'Then there wil be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob andal the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrown out.
And there shall come from the east and the west, and the north and the south; and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.29 And people from east and west, from north and south, wil come and sit down at the feast in thekingdom of God.
And behold, they are last that shall be first; and they are first that shall be last.30 'Look, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who wil be last.'
The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee.31 Just at this time some Pharisees came up. 'Go away,' they said. 'Leave this place, because Herodmeans to kill you.'
And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I am consummated.32 He replied, 'You may go and give that fox this message: Look! Today and tomorrow I drive out devilsand heal, and on the third day I attain my end.
Nevertheless I must walk to day and to morrow, and the day following, because it cannot be that a prophet perish, out of Jerusalem.33 But for today and tomorrow and the next day I must go on, since it would not be right for a prophet todie outside Jerusalem.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children as the bird doth her brood under her wings, and thou wouldest not?34 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kil the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!
Behold your house shall be left to you desolate. And I say to you, that you shall not see me till the time come, when you shall say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.35 Look! Your house wil be left to you. Yes, I promise you, you shal not see me till the time comeswhen you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'
