Jeremiah 34

1 The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, (when Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth, that were under the power of his hand, and all the people fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities thereof,) saying:	1 Parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par le Seigneur, en ces termes, lorsque Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et toute son armée, et tous les royaumes de la terre qui étaient sous la puissance de sa main, et tous les peuples, combattaient contre Jérusalem, et contre toutes les villes qui en dépendaient:
2 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Go, and speak to Sedecias king of Juda, and say to him: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will deliver this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.	2 Ainsi parle le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël: Va, et parle à Sédécias, roi de Juda, et dis-lui: Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Voici, Je livrerai cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone, et il la brûlera par le feu;
3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand: but thou shalt surely be taken, and thou shalt be delivered into his hand: and thy eyes shall see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth shall speak with thy mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.	3 et toi, tu n'échapperas pas à ses mains, mais tu seras pris certainement et livré entre ses mains, et tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, et il te parlera bouche à bouche, et tu entreras dans Babylone.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Sedecias king of Juda: Thus saith the Lord to thee: Thou shalt not die by the sword.	4 Cependant écoute la parole du Seigneur, Sédécias, roi de Juda. Voici ce que te dit le Seigneur: Tu ne mourras point par le glaive,
5 But thou shalt die in peace, and according to the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they burn thee: and they shall mourn for thee, saying: Alas, Lord: for I have spoken the word, saith the Lord.	5 mais tu mourras en paix; et comme on a brûlé des parfums pour les anciens rois, tes prédécesseurs, ainsi on en brûlera pour toi, et on se lamentera sur toi en criant: Hélas, seigneur! car J'ai prononcé cet arrêt, dit le Seigneur.
6 And Jeremias the prophet spoke all these words to Sedecias the king of Juda in Jerusalem.	6 Et le prophète Jérémie dit toutes ces paroles à Sédécias, roi de Juda, dans Jérusalem.
7 And the army of the king of Babylon fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Juda that were left, against Lachis, and against Azecha: for these remained of the cities of Juda, fenced cities.	7 Cependant le roi de Babylone combattait contre Jérusalem et contre toutes les villes de Juda qui étaient restées, contre Lachis et Azécha; car c'étaient des villes fortes qui étaient restées parmi les filles de Juda.
8 The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, after that king Sedecias had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem making a proclamation:	8 Parole qui fut adressée par le Seigneur à Jérémie, après que Sédécias, roi de Juda, eût fait un pacte avec tout le peuple à Jérusalem,
9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free: and that they should not lord it over them, to wit, over the Jews their brethren.	9 en publiant que chacun renvoyât libre son serviteur et sa servante qui étaient du peuple hébreu, et qu'ils n'exerçassent pas sur eux leur domination, puisqu'ils étaient Juifs et leurs frères.
10 And all the princes, and all the people who entered into the covenant, heard that every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant go free, and should no more have dominion over them: and they obeyed, and let them go free.	10 Tous les princes et tout le peuple écoutèrent donc le roi, et s'obligèrent à renvoyer livres chacun son serviteur et sa servante, et à ne plus exercer de domination sur eux. Ils obéirent, et ils les renvoyèrent.
11 But afterwards they turned: and brought back again their servants and their handmaids, whom they had let go free, and brought them into subjection as menservants and maidservants.	11 Mais ils changèrent ensuite; ils reprirent leurs serviteurs et leurs servantes qu'ils avaient mis en liberté, et ils les obligèrent de redevenir serviteurs et esclaves.
12 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:	12 Alors la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie, en ces termes:
13 Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying:	13 Ainsi parle le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël: J'ai fait alliance avec vos pères, le jour où Je les ai retirés de la terre d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude et Je leur ai dit:
14 At the end of seven years, let ye go every man his brother being a Hebrew, who hath been sold to thee, so he shall serve thee six years: and thou shalt let him go free from thee: and your fathers did not hearken to me, nor did they incline their ear.	14 Lorsque sept ans seront accomplis, que chacun renvoie son frère hébreu qui lui aura été vendu; il te servira pendant six ans, et tu le renverras libre; mais vos pères ne M'ont pas écouté, et ils n'ont pas prêté l'oreille.
15 And you turned to day, and did that which was right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every one to his brother: and you made a covenant in my sight, in the house upon which my name is invocated.	15 Et vous, vous vous étiez tournés vers Moi aujourd'hui, et vous aviez fait ce qui est droit à Mes yeux, en publiant la liberté chacun pour son prochain; et vous avez fait ce pacte devant Moi, dans la maison sur laquelle Mon nom a été invoqué;
16 And you are fallen back, and have defiled my name: and you have brought back again every man his manservant, and every man his maidservant, whom you had let go free, and set at liberty: and you have brought them into subjection to be your servants and handmaids.	16 Mais vous êtes revenus en arrière, et vous avez déshonoré Mon nom, et vous avez repris chacun votre serviteur et votre servante, que vous aviez renvoyés pour être libres et maîtres d'eux-mêmes, et vous les avez obligés de redevenir vos esclaves et vos servantes.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord: You have not hearkened to me, in proclaiming liberty every man to his brother and every man to his friend: behold I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine: and I will cause you to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth.	17 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur: Vous ne M'avez pas écouté, en publiant la liberté chacun pour son frère et chacun pour son ami; voici que Moi Je publie, dit le Seigneur, votre liberté pour le glaive, pour la famine, et pour la peste, et Je vous rendrai errants par tous les royaumes de la terre.
18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, and have not performed the words of the covenant which they agreed to in my presence, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts thereof:	18 Je livrerai les hommes qui ont violé Mon alliance, et qui n'ont pas observé les paroles du pacte qu'ils avaient fait en Ma présence, en coupant un veau en deux, et en passant entre ses morceaux,
19 The princes of Juda, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land that passed between the parts of the calf:	19 Je livrerai les princes de Juda et les princes de Jérusalem, les eunuques et les prêtres, et tout le peuple du pays, qui ont passé entre les morceaux du veau,
20 And I will give them into the hands of their enemies, and into the hands of them that seek their life : and their dead bodies shall be for meat to the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.	20 Je les livrerai entre les mains de leurs ennemis et entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et leurs cadavres seront la pâture des oiseaux du ciel et des bêtes de la terre.
21 And Sedecias the king of Juda, and his princes, I will give into the hands of their enemies, and into the hands of them that seek their lives, and into the hands of the armies of the king of Babylon, which are gone from you.	21 Et Je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, et ses princes, entre les mains de leurs ennemis, entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et entre les mains des armées du roi de Babylone, qui se sont éloignées de vous.
22 Behold I will command, saith the Lord, and I will bring them again to this city, and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Juda a desolation, without an inhabitant.	22 C'est Moi qui l'ordonne, dit le Seigneur, et Je les ramènerai devant cette ville; ils l'attaqueront, ils la prendront et ils la brûleront par le feu; et Je ferai des villes de Juda un désert où il n'y aura plus d'habitant.
