Sirach 7

1 Do no evils, and no evils shall lay hold of thee.	1 Tue nichts Böses, so widerfährt dir nichts Böses,
2 Depart from the unjust, and evils shall depart from thee.	2 meide das Unrecht, so wird es fern von dir bleiben.
3 My son, sow not evils in the furrows of injustice, and thou shalt not reap them sevenfold.	3 Mein Sohn, säe nicht in die Furchen des Unrechts, so wirst du nicht siebenfältig von ihnen ernten.
4 Seek not of the Lord a pre-eminence, nor of the king the seat of honour.	4 Erbitte dir von Gott keine Herrscherstellung und ebenso vom Könige keinen Ehrenstuhl.
5 Justify not thyself before God, for he knoweth the heart: and desire not to appear wise before the king.	5 Stelle dich vor Gott nicht als gerecht hin und spiele vor dem König nicht den Weisen.
6 Seek not to be made a judge, unless thou have strength enough to extirpate iniquities: lest thou fear the person of the powerful, and lay a stumblingblock for thy integrity.	6 Trachte nicht danach, ein Richter (= hoher Beamter, Gewalthaber) zu werden, wenn du nicht imstande bist, dem Unrecht ein Ende zu machen; sonst würdest du dich vor der Person des Machthabers fürchten müssen und Anstoß trotz deiner Rechtschaffenheit erregen.
7 Offend not against the multitude of a city, neither cast thyself in upon the people,	7 Verfehle dich nicht gegen die Stadtgemeinde und bringe dich nicht selbst in Mißachtung beim Volk. –
8 Nor bind sin to sin: for even in one thou shalt not be unpunished.	8 Glaube nicht, zweimal ungestraft eine Sünde begehen zu können; denn schon bei einer einzigen wirst du nicht straflos ausgehen.
9 Be not fainthearted in thy mind:	9 Denke nicht: »Der Herr wird die Menge meiner Opfergaben beachten, und wenn ich Gott, dem Höchsten, etwas darbringe, so wird er’s annehmen«.
10 Neglect not to pray, and to give alms.	10 Sei nicht mutlos bei deinem Gebet und versäume nicht, Mildtätigkeit zu üben.
11 Say not: God will have respect to the multitude of my gifts, and when I offer to the most high God, he will accept my offerings.	11 Verlache keinen, dessen Gemüt tief bekümmert ist; denn es gibt einen, der da erniedrigt und erhöht. –
12 Laugh no man to scorn in the bitterness of his soul: for there is one that humbleth and exalteth, God who seeth	12 Pflüge (= schmiede, ersinne) keine Lüge gegen deinen Bruder und tue das Gleiche auch deinem Freunde nicht an (h).
13 Devise not a lie against thy brother: neither do the like against thy friend.	13 Wolle nie irgend eine Lüge aussprechen, denn die Gewöhnung daran (?) schlägt nicht zum Guten aus. –
14 Be not willing to make any manner of lie: for the custom thereof is not good.	14 Sei kein Schwätzer in der Versammlung der Alten und wiederhole kein Wort in deinem Gebet (= mache nicht viele Worte, wenn du betest?). –
15 Be not full of words in a multitude of ancients, and repeat not the word in thy prayer.	15 Hasse nicht die mühevolle Handarbeit, noch den Ackerbau, da der Höchste ihn verordnet hat.
16 Hate not laborious works, nor husbandry ordained by the most High.	16 Rechne dich nicht selbst zu der großen Zahl der Sünder; bedenke wohl, daß der Zorn nicht lange auf sich warten läßt.
17 Number not thyself among the multitude of the disorderly.	17 Demütige tief deine Seele, denn die Strafe für den Gottlosen ist das Feuer und der Wurm (vgl. Jes 66,24; Mk 9,48).
18 Remember wrath, for it will not tarry long.	18 Einen Freund vertausche nicht um wertloses Geld, noch einen leiblichen (oder edlen?) Bruder um Ophirgold.
19 Humble thy spirit very much: for the vengeance on the flesh of the ungodly is fire and worms.	19 Wende dich nicht ab von einer klugen und guten Ehefrau, denn ihre Anmut ist wertvoller als Gold.
20 Do not transgress against thy friend deferring money, nor despise thy dear brother for the sake of gold.	20 Behandle keinen Knecht übel, der treu arbeitet, und ebensowenig einen Tagelöhner, der dir von Herzen ergeben ist.
21 Depart not from a wise and good wife, whom thou best gotten in the fear of the Lord: for the grace of her modesty is above gold.	21 Einen verständigen Dienstboten liebe aufrichtig und enthalte ihm die Freilassung nicht vor.
22 Hurt not the servant that worketh faithfully, nor the hired man that giveth thee his life.	22 Hast du Vieh, so sieh selbst nach ihm, und ist es dir nützlich, so behalte es. –
23 Let a wise servant be dear to thee as thy own soul, defraud him not of liberty, nor leave him needy.	23 Hast du Kinder, so halte sie in Zucht und beuge ihnen den Nacken von Jugend auf.
24 Hast thou cattle? have an eye to them: and if they be for thy profit, keep them with thee.	24 Hast du Töchter, so gibt acht auf ihren Leib und zeige ihnen kein zu freundliches Gesicht.
25 Hast thou children? instruct them, and bow down their neck from their childhood.	25 Verheiratest du eine Tochter, so hast du ein großes Werk fertig gebracht, aber gib sie einem verständigen Manne zur Frau.
26 Hast thou daughters? have a care of their body, and shew not thy countenance gay towards them.	26 Hast du eine Frau nach deinem Herzen, so verstoße sie nicht (h); ist sie dir aber zuwider, so vertraue dich ihr nicht an.
27 Marry thy daughter well, and then shalt do a great work, and give her to a wise man.	27 Von ganzem Herzen ehre deinen Vater und vergiß deine Mutter nicht, die dich mit Schmerzen geboren;
28 If thou hast a wife according to thy soul, cast her not off: and to her that is hateful, trust not thyself. With thy whole heart,	28 bedenke wohl, daß du ihnen das Leben verdankst; wie kannst du ihnen vergelten, was sie an dir getan haben?
29 Honour thy father, and forget not the groanings of thy mother:	29 Mit deinem ganzen Herzen fürchte den Herrn und halte seine Priester in Ehren (oder heilig h).
30 Remember that thou hadst not been born but through them: and make a return to them as they have done for thee.	30 Mit ganzer Kraft liebe deinen Schöpfer und laß seine Diener nicht im Stich.
31 With all thy soul fear the Lord, and reverence his priests.	31 Fürchte den Herrn und ehre den Priester und gib ihm seinen Anteil, wie dir geboten ist: die Erstlinge und Schuldopfer und die Gabe des Bugs, das hochheilige Speisopfer und den Priesterzehnten (h).
32 With all thy strength love him that made thee: and forsake not his ministers.	32 Auch dem Armen strecke deine Hand hin, damit der Segen für dich vollkommen werde.
33 Honour God with all thy soul, and give honour to the priests, and purify thyself with thy arms.	33 Ein liebevolles Geschenk kommt jedem Lebenden zu, aber auch dem Toten versage deine Liebe nicht.
34 Give them their portion, as it is commanded thee, of the firstfruits and of purifications: and for thy negligences purify thyself with a few.	34 Entziehe dich nicht den Weinenden und trauere mit den Trauernden.
35 Offer to the Lord the gift of thy shoulders, and the sacrifice of sanctification, and the firstfruits of the holy things:	35 Sei nicht lässig, die Kraken zu besuchen, denn durch solches Verhalten wirst du Liebe ernten.

37 A gift hath grace in the sight of all the living, and restrain not grace from the dead.
38 And stretch out thy hand to the poor, that thy expiation and thy blessing may be perfected.
40 Be not wanting in comforting them that weep, and walk with them that mourn.
41 Be not slow to visit the sick: for by these things thou shalt be confirmed in love.
