Sirach 29

1 He that sheweth mercy, lendeth to his neighbour: and he that is stronger in hand, keepeth the commandments.	1 Celui qui fait miséricorde prête à son prochain, et celui qui a la main généreuse garde les préceptes.
2 Lend to thy neighbour in the time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due time.	2 Prête à ton prochain au temps de sa nécessité; mais à ton tour paye ta dette au prochain au temps fixé.
3 Reap thy word, and deal faithfully with him: and thou shalt always find that which is necessary for thee.	3 Tiens ta parole et agis loyalement avec lui, et tu trouveras toujours ce qui t'est nécessaire.
4 Many have looked upon a thing lent as a thing found, and have given trouble to them that helped them.	4 Beaucoup regardent comme une trouvaille ce qu'ils ont emprunté, et causent de l'ennui à ceux qui les ont secourus.
5 Till they receive, they kiss the hands of the lender, and in promises they humble their voice:	5 Jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient reçu, ils baisent la main de celui qui leur prête, et ils font des promesses d'une voix humble;
6 But when they should repay, they will ask time, and will return tedious and murmuring words, and will complain of the time:	6 mais quand il faut rendre, ils demandent du temps, ils prononcent des paroles de chagrin et de murmure, et ils prétextent que les temps sont mauvais.
7 And if he be able to pay, he will stand off, he will scarce pay one half, and will count it as if he had found it:	7 S'ils peuvent payer, ils s'en défendent; ils rendent à peine la moitié de la dette, et ils regardent cela comme une trouvaille.
8 But if not, he will defraud him of his money, and he shall get him for an enemy without cause:	8 S'ils ne le peuvent, ils frustrent le créancier de son argent et se font de lui gratuitement un ennemi.
9 And he will pay him with reproaches and curses, and instead of honour and good turn will repay him injuries.	9 Ils le payent en injures et en malédictions, et ils lui rendent l'outrage pour la grâce et le bien qu'il leur a fait.
10 Many have refused to lend, not out of wickedness, but they were afraid to be defrauded without cause.	10 Beaucoup ne prêtent pas, non par dureté, mais parce qu'ils craignent d'être trompés gratuitement.
11 But yet towards the poor be thou more hearty, and delay not to shew him mercy.	11 Néanmoins sois magnanime envers le misérable, et ne le fais pas languir pour son aumône.
12 Help the poor because of the commandment: and send him not away empty handed because of his poverty.	12 Assiste le pauvre à cause du commandement, et ne le renvoie pas les mains vides, à cause de sa misère.
13 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend: and hide it not under a stone to be lost.	13 Perds ton argent pour ton frère et pour ton ami, et ne le cache pas sous une pierre, sans profit.
14 Place thy treasure in the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.	14 Place ton trésor selon les préceptes du Très-Haut, et il te sera plus utile que l'or.
15 Shut up alms in the heart of the poor, and it shall obtain help for thee against all evil.	15 Cache ton aumône dans le sein du pauvre, et elle priera pour toi, afin de te délivrer de tout mal.
16 Better than the shield of the mighty, and better than the spear:	16 , 17, 18. Mieux que le bouclier et la lance du héros, elle combattra contre ton ennemi.
17 It shall fight for thee against thy enemy.
18 A good man is surety for his neighbour: and he that hath lost shame, will leave him to himself.
19 Forget not the kindness of thy surety: for he hath given his life for thee.	19 L'homme de bien se fait caution pour son prochain, mais celui qui a perdu toute honte l'abandonne à lui-même.
20 The sinner and the unclean fleeth from his surety.	20 N'oublie pas la grâce que te fait celui qui se fait caution, car il a exposé sa vie pour toi.
21 A sinner attributeth to himself the goods of his surety: and he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him that delivered him.	21 Le pécheur et l'impur fuient celui qui a répondu pour eux.
22 A man is surety for his neighbour: and when he hath lost all shame, he shall forsake him.	22 Le pécheur s'attribue le bien de son répondant, et celui qui a le coeur ingrat abandonne son libérateur.
23 Evil suretyship hath undone many of good estate, and hath tossed them as a wave of the sea.	23 Un homme répond pour son prochain et, celui-ci perdant toute honte, en sera abandonné.
24 It hath made powerful men to go from place to place round about, and they have wandered in strange countries.	24 L'engagement contracté mal à propos a perdu beaucoup d'hommes qui prospéraient, et les a agités comme les flots de la mer.
25 A sinner that transgresseth the commandment of the Lord, shall fall into an evil suretyship: and he that undertaketh many things, shall fall into judgment.	25 Il a banni en divers lieux des hommes puissants, qui ont erré dans les pays étrangers.
26 Recover thy neighbour according to thy power, and take heed to thyself that thou fall not.	26 Le pécheur qui viole le commandement du Seigneur s'engagera en des cautions fâcheuses, et celui qui cherche à entreprendre beaucoup d'affaires s'expose au jugement.
27 The chief thing for man's life is water and bread, and clothing, and a house to cover shame.	27 Assiste ton prochain selon ton pouvoir; mais prends garde de ne pas tomber toi-même.
28 Better is the poor man's fare under a roof of boards, than sumptuous cheer abroad in another man's house.	28 Le principal pour la vie de l'homme, c'est l'eau, le pain, le vêtement et une maison qui couvre ce qui doit être caché.
29 Be contented with little instead of much, and thou shalt not hear the reproach of going abroad.	29 Mieux vaut la nourriture du pauvre sous un toit de planches, qu'un festin magnifique dans une maison étrangère, quand on n'a pas de domicile.
30 It is a miserable life to go as a guest from house to house: for where a man is a stranger, he shall not deal confidently, nor open his mouth.	30 Contente-toi de peu au lieu de beaucoup, et tu ne t'entendras pas reprocher d'être un étranger.
31 He shall entertain and feed, and give drink to the unthankful, and moreover he shall hear bitter words.	31 C'est une vie malheureuse que de loger de maison en maison; là où l'on est reçu comme hôte, on n'agit pas avec confiance, et l'on n'ouvre pas la bouche.
32 Go, stranger, and furnish the table, and give others to eat what thou hast in thy hand.	32 On reçoit l'hospitalité, on donne à manger et à boire à des ingrats, et après cela on entend des paroles amères:
33 Give place to the honourable presence of my friends: for I want my house, my brother being to be lodged with me.	33 Viens, hôte, prépare la table, et donne à manger aux autres avec ce que tu as.
34 These things are grievous to a man of understanding: the upbraiding of houseroom, and the reproaching of the lender.	34 Retire-toi à cause de l'honneur que je dois à mes amis; j'ai besoin de ma maison pour y recevoir mon frère.
