1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.	1 Palavras do Eclesiaste, filho de Davide, rei de Jerusalém.
2 Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes vanity of vanities, and all is vanity.	2 Vaidade de vaidades, diz o Eclesiaste, vaidade de vaidade, tudo é vaidade!
3 What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun?	3 Que proveito tira o homem de todo o trabalho com que se afadiga debaixo do sol?
4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever.	4 Uma geração passa, outra geração lhe sucede, mas a terra permanece sempre estável.
5 The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again,	5 O sol nasce e põe-se, corre ao seu lugar, donde volta a nascer.
6 Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits.	6 O vento dirige o seu giro para o meio-dia, depois declina para o norte; corre, visitando tudo em roda, e volta a começar (depois) os seus circuitos.
7 All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again.	7 Todos os rios entram no mar, e o mar nem por isso trasborda; os rios voltam ao mesmo lugar donde saíram, para tornarem a correr.
8 All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing.	8 Todas as coisas se afadigam, mais do que se pode dizer. O olho não se farta de ver, nem o ouvido se cansa de ouvir (sempre as mesmas coisas).
9 What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done.	9 Que é o que foi? O mesmo que há-de ser. Que é o que se fez? O mesmo que se há-de fazer.
10 Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us.	10 Não há nada novo debaixo do sol, e ninguém pode dizer; Eis aqui está uma coisa nova, porque ela já existiu nos séculos que passaram antes de nós.
11 There is no remembrance of former things: nor indeed of those things which hereafter are to come, shall there be any remembrance with them that shall be in the latter end.	11 Não há memória das coisas antigas, mas também não haverá memória das coisas que hão-de suceder depois de nós, entre aqueles que viverão mais tarde.
12 I Ecclesiastes was king over Israel in Jerusalem,	12 Eu, o Eclesiaste, fui rei de Israel em Jerusalém,
13 And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.	13 e propus no meu coração inquirir e investigar sàbiamente todas as coisas que se fazem debaixo dos céus: Deus deu esta penosa ocupação aos filhos dos homens, para que se dedicassem a ela.
14 I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.	14 Vi tudo o que se faz debaixo do sol, e achei que tudo era vaidade e a aflição de espírito.
15 The perverse are hard to be corrected, and the number of fools is infinite.	15 O torto não se pode endireitar e o que falta não se pode contar.
16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: Behold I am become great, and have gone beyond all in wisdom, that were before me in Jerusalem: and my mind hath contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.	16 Eu disse no meu coração: Eis que cheguei a ser grande, que excedi em sabedoria a todos os que antes de mim houve em Jerusalém; o meu espirito possuiu largamente a sabedoria e a ciência.
17 And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,	17 Apliquei o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria, a loucura, os desvarios, e reconheci que ainda isto é aflição de espírito,
18 Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.	18 porque na muita sabedoria há muita amargura, e o que aumenta a sua ciência, também aumenta o seu sofrimento.
