1 Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it.	1 - Cantico de' gradini. Spesso m'hanno assalito sin dalla mia gioventù, -dica ora Israele, -
2 It is vain for you to rise before light, rise ye after you have sitten, you that eat the bread of sorrow. When he shall give sleep to his beloved,	2 spesso m'hanno assalito sin dalla mia gioventù, ma non han prevalso contro di me.
3 behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb.	3 Sul mio dorso han lavorato i peccatori, han prolungato la loro iniquità.
4 As arrows in the hand of the mighty, so the children of them that have been shaken.	4 [Ma] il Signore è giusto, ha troncato le teste dei peccatori.
5 Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them; he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate.	5 Sian svergognati e si facciano indietrotutti quelli che odiano Sion.
	6 Divengan come l'erba de' tetti, che prima d'esser colta è secca.
	7 Di essa non empie la sua mano chi miete, e il suo seno chi i covoni raccoglie!
	8 E non dicono i passanti:«La benedizione del Signore su voi. Noi vi benediciamo nel nome del Signore!».
