DOUAI-RHEIMSLXX
But Job answered, and said:1 υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει
O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance.2 ει γαρ τις ιστων στησαι μου την οργην τας δε οδυνας μου αραι εν ζυγω ομοθυμαδον
As the sand of the sea this would appear heavier: therefore my words are full of sorrow :3 και δη αμμου παραλιας βαρυτερα εσται αλλ' ως εοικεν τα ρηματα μου εστιν φαυλα
For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.4 βελη γαρ κυριου εν τω σωματι μου εστιν ων ο θυμος αυτων εκπινει μου το αιμα οταν αρξωμαι λαλειν κεντουσι με
Will the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or will the ox low when he standeth before a full manger?5 τι γαρ μη δια κενης κεκραξεται ονος αγριος αλλ' η τα σιτα ζητων ει δε και ρηξει φωνην βους επι φατνης εχων τα βρωματα
Or can an unsavoury thing be eaten, that is not seasoned with salt? or can a man taste that which when tasted bringeth death?6 ει βρωθησεται αρτος ανευ αλος ει δε και εστιν γευμα εν ρημασιν κενοις
The things which before my soul would not touch, now, through anguish are my meats.7 ου δυναται γαρ παυσασθαι μου η ψυχη βρομον γαρ ορω τα σιτα μου ωσπερ οσμην λεοντος
Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for?8 ει γαρ δωη και ελθοι μου η αιτησις και την ελπιδα μου δωη ο κυριος
And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?9 αρξαμενος ο κυριος τρωσατω με εις τελος δε μη με ανελετω
And that this may be my comfort, that afflicting me with sorrow, he spare not, nor I contradict the words of the Holy One.10 ειη δε μου πολις ταφος εφ' ης επι τειχεων ηλλομην επ' αυτης ου μη φεισωμαι ου γαρ εψευσαμην ρηματα αγια θεου μου
For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end that I should keep patience?11 τις γαρ μου η ισχυς οτι υπομενω η τις μου ο χρονος οτι ανεχεται μου η ψυχη
My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh of brass.12 μη ισχυς λιθων η ισχυς μου η αι σαρκες μου εισιν χαλκειαι
Behold there is no help for me in myself, and my familiar friends also are departed from me.13 η ουκ επ' αυτω επεποιθειν βοηθεια δε απ' εμου απεστιν
He that taketh away mercy from his friend, forsaketh the fear of the Lord.14 απειπατο με ελεος επισκοπη δε κυριου υπερειδεν με
My brethren have passed by me, as the torrent that passeth swiftly in the valleys.15 ου προσειδον με οι εγγυτατοι μου ωσπερ χειμαρρους εκλειπων η ωσπερ κυμα παρηλθον με
They that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.16 οιτινες με διευλαβουντο νυν επιπεπτωκασιν μοι ωσπερ χιων η κρυσταλλος πεπηγως
At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish: and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.17 καθως τακεισα θερμης γενομενης ουκ επεγνωσθη οπερ ην
The paths of their steps are entangled: they shall walk in vain, and shall perish.18 ουτως καγω κατελειφθην υπο παντων απωλομην δε και εξοικος εγενομην
Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while.19 ιδετε οδους θαιμανων ατραπους σαβων οι διορωντες
They are confounded, because I have hoped: they are come also even unto me, and are covered with shame.20 και αισχυνην οφειλησουσιν οι επι πολεσιν και χρημασιν πεποιθοτες
Now you are come: and now seeing my affliction you are afraid.21 αταρ δε και υμεις επεβητε μοι ανελεημονως ωστε ιδοντες το εμον τραυμα φοβηθητε
Did I say: Bring to me, and give me of your substance?22 τι γαρ μη τι υμας ητησα η της παρ' υμων ισχυος επιδεομαι
Or deliver me from the hand of the enemy, and rescue me out of the hand of the mighty?23 ωστε σωσαι με εξ εχθρων η εκ χειρος δυναστων ρυσασθαι με
Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and if I have been ignorant in any thing, instruct me.24 διδαξατε με εγω δε κωφευσω ει τι πεπλανημαι φρασατε μοι
Why have you detracted the words of truth, whereas there is none of you that can reprove me?25 αλλ' ως εοικεν φαυλα αληθινου ρηματα ου γαρ παρ' υμων ισχυν αιτουμαι
You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.26 ουδε ο ελεγχος υμων ρημασιν με παυσει ουδε γαρ υμων φθεγμα ρηματος ανεξομαι
You rush in upon the fatherless, and you endeavour to overthrow your friend.27 πλην οτι επ' ορφανω επιπιπτετε εναλλεσθε δε επι φιλω υμων
However finish what you have begun, give ear, and see whether I lie.28 νυνι δε εισβλεψας εις προσωπα υμων ου ψευσομαι
Answer, I beseech you, without contention: and speaking that which is just, judge ye.29 καθισατε δη και μη ειη αδικον και παλιν τω δικαιω συνερχεσθε
And you shall not And iniquity in my tongue, neither shall folly sound in my mouth.30 ου γαρ εστιν εν γλωσση μου αδικον η ο λαρυγξ μου ουχι συνεσιν μελετα
