DOUAI-RHEIMS	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.	1 Yo establecí un pacto con mis ojos para no fijar la mirada en ninguna joven.
2 For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?	2 Porque ¿cuál es la porción que Dios asigna desde lo alto y la herencia que el Todopoderoso distribuye desde el cielo?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?	3 ¿No es la ruina para el injusto y el desastre para los que hacen el mal?
4 Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?	4 ¿Acaso él no ve mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?
5 If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:	5 Si caminé al lado de la mentira y mis pies corrieron hacia el engaño,
6 Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.	6 ¡que Dios me pese en una balanza justa y reconocerá mi integridad!
7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:	7 Si mi paso se desvió del camino y mi corazón fue detrás de lo que veían mis ojos; si alguna mancha se adhirió a mis manos,
8 Then let me sow and let another eat: and let my offspring be rooted out.	8 ¡que otro coma lo que yo siembro y mis retoños sean arrancados de raíz!
9 If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend's door:	9 Si me dejé seducir por alguna mujer o aceché a la puerta de mi vecino,
10 Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.	10 ¡que mi mujer muela el grano para otro y que otros abusen de ella!
11 For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.	11 Porque eso sí que es una infamia, un delito reprobado por los jueces;
12 It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.	12 es un fuego que devora hasta la Perdición y exterminará de raíz todas mis cosechas.
13 If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:	13 Si desestimé el derecho de mi esclavo o el de mi servidora, cuando litigaban conmigo,
14 For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?	14 ¿qué haré cuando Dios se levante, qué le replicaré cuando me pida cuenta?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?	15 El que me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo también a él? ¿No es uno mismo el que nos formó en el seno materno?
16 If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:	16 Si rehusé a los pobres lo que ellos deseaban y dejé desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;
17 If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:	17 si comí yo solo mi pedazo de pan, sin que el huérfano lo compartiera
18 (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb :)	18 –yo, que desde mi juventud lo crié como un padre y lo guié desde el vientre de mi madre–
19 If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:	19 si vi a un miserable sin ropa o a un indigente sin nada para cubrirse,
20 If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:	20 y no me bendijeron en lo íntimo de su ser por haberse calentado con el vellón de mis corderos;
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:	21 si alcé mi mano contra un huérfano, porque yo contaba con una ayuda en la Puerta,
22 Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.	22 ¡que mi espada se desprenda del cuello y mi brazo sea arrancado de su juntura!
23 For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was not able to bear.	23 Porque el terror de Dios me acarrearía la ruina y no podría resistir ante su majestad.
24 If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:	24 Si deposité mi confianza en el oro y dije al oro fino: «Tú eres mi seguridad»;
25 If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.	25 si me alegré de tener muchas riquezas y de haber adquirido una enorme fortuna;
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, and the moon going in brightness:	26 si a la vista del sol resplandeciente y de la luna que pasaba radiante,
27 And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:	27 mi corazón se dejó seducir en secreto y le envié besos con la mano:
28 Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.	28 ¡también eso sería un delito reprobado por los jueces, porque yo habría renegado del Dios de lo alto!
29 If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.	29 ¿Acaso me alegré del infortunio de mi enemigo y me regocijé cuando le tocó una desgracia?
30 For I have not given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.	30 No, no dejé que mi boca pecara, pidiendo su muerte con una imprecación.
31 If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?	31 ¿No decían los hombres de mi carpa: «¿Hay alguien que no se sació con su carne?».
32 The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.	32 Ningún extranjero pasaba la noche afuera, y yo abría mi puerta al caminante.
33 If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.	33 Si oculté mis transgresiones como un hombre cualquiera, escondiendo mi culpa en mi pecho,
34 If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and I have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.	34 porque temía el murmullo de la gente o me asustaba el desprecio de mis parientes, y me quedaba en silencio, sin salir a la puerta...
35 Who would grant me a hearer, that the Almighty may hear my desire; and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,	35 ¡Ah, si alguien quisiera escucharme! Aquí está mi firma: ¡que el Todopoderoso me responda! En cuanto al documento que escriba mi oponente,
36 That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?	36 yo lo llevaré sobre mis espaldas, y me lo ceñiré como una corona.
37 At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.	37 Sí, le manifestaré cada uno de mis pasos; como un príncipe, me acercaré hasta él.
38 If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:	38 Si mi tierra gritó venganza contra mí y también sus surcos derramaron lágrimas;
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the soul of the tillers thereof:	39 si comí sus frutos sin pagar y extorsioné a sus propietarios,
40 Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.	40 ¡que en lugar de trigo salgan espinas, y en vez de cebada, ortigas punzantes!
