1 At that time Antiochus returned with dishonour out of Persia.	1 Cependant Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui reprirent, grâce à la protection du Seigneur, le temple et la ville.
2 For he had entered into the city called Persepolis, and attempted to rob the temple, and to oppress the city: but the multitude running together to arms, put them to flight: and so it fell out that Antiochus being put to flight returned with disgrace.	2 Ils détruisirent les autels que les étrangers avaient dressés sur les places publiques, ainsi que les sanctuaires;
3 Now when he was come about Ecbatana, he received the news of what had happened to Nicanor and Timotheus.	3 et, après avoir purifié le temple, ils érigèrent un autre autel; et, ayant tiré des étincelles de pierres à feu, ils offrirent des sacrifices après deux ans, et ils mirent l'encens, les lampes et les pains de proposition.
4 And swelling with anger he thought to revenge upon the Jews the injury done by them that had put him to flight. And therefore he commanded his chariot to be driven, without stopping in his journey, the judgment of heaven urging him forward, because he had spoken so proudly, that he would come to Jerusalem, and make it a common burying place of the Jews.	4 Cela fait, ils demandaient au Seigneur, prosternés à terre, de ne plus tomber dans de tels maux; mais, s'ils péchaient jamais, d'être châtiés plus doucement par Lui, et de n'être plus livrés à des barbares et à des blasphémateurs.
5 But the Lord the God of Israel, that seeth all things, struck him with an incurable and an invisible plague. For as soon as he had ended these words, a dreadful pain in his bowels came upon him, and bitter torments of the inner parts.	5 Or il arriva que la purification du temple eut lieu le même jour où il avait été profané par les étrangers, le vingt-cinq du mois de casleu.
6 And indeed very justly, seeing he had tormented the bowels of others with many and new torments, albeit he by no means ceased from his malice.	6 Ils célébrèrent cette fête avec joie pendant huit jours, comme celle des Tabernacles, se souvenant que, peu de temps auparavant, ils avaient passé la fête solennelle des Tabernacles sur les montagnes et dans les cavernes, à la manière des bêtes sauvages.
7 Moreover being filled with pride, breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews, and commanding the matter to be hastened, it happened as he was going with violence that he fell from the chariot, so that his limbs were much pained by a grievous bruising of the body.	7 C'est pourquoi ils portaient des branches couvertes de feuillage, des rameaux verts et des palmes, en l'honneur de Celui qui leur avait procuré la faveur de purifier Son temple.
8 Thus he that seemed to himself to command even the waves of the sea, being proud above the condition of man, and to weigh the heights of the mountains in a balance, now being cast down to the ground, was carried in a litter, bearing witness to the manifest power of God in himself:	8 Et ils enjoignirent, par une déclaration et une ordonnance générale, à toute la nation des Juifs, de célébrer tous les ans ces jours de fête.
9 So that worms swarmed out of the body of this man, and whilst he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell off, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to the army.	9 Telle fut donc la fin de la vie d'Antiochus, qui fut appelé le Noble.
10 And the man that thought a little to before he could reach the stars of heaven, no man could endure to carry, for the intolerable stench.	10 Nous raconterons maintenant les actions d'Eupator, fils de l'impie Antiochus, en exposant brièvement les maux arrivés pendant ses guerres.
11 And by this means, being brought from his great pride, he began to come to the knowledge of himself, being admonished by the scourge of God, his pains increasing every moment	11 Lorsqu'il prit possession du pouvoir, il établit sur les affaires du royaume un certain Lysias, chef de l'armée de Phénicie et de Syrie.
12 And when he himself could not now abide his own stench, he spoke thus: It is just to be subject to God, and that a mortal man should not equal himself to God.	12 Car Ptolémée, surnommé Macer, résolut d'être tout à fait juste envers les Juifs, surtout à cause de l'injustice qu'on leur avait faite, et d'agir avec eux dans un esprit de paix.
13 Then this wicked man prayed to the Lord, of whom he was not like to obtain mercy.	13 Mais, à cause de cela, il fut accusé auprès d'Eupator par ses amis, et comme il s'entendait souvent appeler traître, parce qu'il avait abandonné la Chypre, que Philométor lui avait confiée, et qu'après être passé dans le parti d'Antiochus le Noble, il s'était aussi éloigné de lui, il finit sa vie par le poison.
14 And the city to which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground, and to make it a, common buryingplace, he now desireth to make free.	14 Or Gorgias, qui commandait en ces lieux, ayant pris des troupes étrangères, combattait souvent contre les Juifs.
15 And the Jews whom he said he would not account worthy to be so much as buried, but would give them up to be devoured by the birds and wild beasts, and would utterly destroy them with their children, he now promiseth to make equal with the Athenians.	15 Mais les Juifs, qui occupaient des forteresses avantageuses, recevaient ceux qui avaient été chassés de Jérusalem, et cherchaient à faire la guerre.
16 The holy temple also which before he had spoiled, he promiseth to adorn with goodly gifts, and to multiply the holy vessels, and to allow out of his revenues the charges pertaining to the sacrifices.	16 Cependant ceux qui étaient avec Machabée, ayant conjuré par leurs prières le Seigneur de venir à leur secours, attaquèrent avec vigueur les forteresses des Iduméens;
17 Yea also, that he would become a Jew himself, and would go through every place of the earth, and declare the power of God.	17 et, après de vigoureux efforts, ils s'emparèrent de ces places, mirent à mort ceux qu'ils rencontrèrent, et tous ensemble n'égorgèrent pas moins de vingt mille hommes.
18 But his pains not ceasing (for the just judgment of God was come upon him) despairing of life he wrote to the Jews in the manner of a supplication, a letter in these words:	18 Et comme quelques-uns s'étaient réfugiés dans deux tours très fortifiées, où ils avaient tout ce qui était nécessaire pour se défendre,
19 To his very good subjects the Jews, Antiochus king and ruler wisheth much health and welfare, and happiness.	19 Machabée laissa pour les forcer Simon, Joseph et Zachée, et les hommes assez nombreux qui étaient avec eux, et il partit lui-même pour des expéditions qui pressaient davantage.
20 If you and your children are well, and if all matters go with you to your mind, we give very great thanks.	20 Mais ceux qui étaient avec Simon, poussés par la cupidité, furent gagnés à prix d'argent par quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient dans les tours, et, ayant reçu soixante-dix mille didrachmes, ils en laissèrent échapper quelques-uns.
21 As for me, being infirm, but yet kindly remembering you, returning out of the places of Persia, and being taken with a grievous disease, I thought it necessary to take care for the common good:	21 Mais lorsqu'on eut rapporté à Machabée ce qui avait eu lieu, il assembla les princes du peuple, et accusa ces hommes d'avoir vendu leurs frères pour de l'argent, en laissant échapper leurs ennemis.
22 Not distrusting my life, but having great hope to escape the sickness.	22 Il fit donc mourir ceux qui étaient devenus des traîtres, et il s'empara aussitôt des deux tours.
23 But considering that my father also, at what time she led an army into the higher countries, appointed who should reign after him:	23 Et, tout cédant heureusement à ses armes et à ses efforts, il tua dans ces deux forteresses plus de vingt mille hommes.
24 To the end that if any thing contrary to expectation should fall out, or ally bad tidings should be brought, they that were in the countries, knowing to whom the whole government was left, might not be troubled.	24 Mais Timothée, qui avait auparavant été vaincu par les Juifs, ayant levé une armée de troupes étrangères et assemblé de la cavalerie d'Asie, s'avança comme pour s'emparer de la Judée par les armes.
25 Moreover, considering that neighbouring princes and borderers wait for opportunities, and expect what shall be the event, I have appointed my son Antiochus king, whom I often recommended to many of you, when I went into the higher provinces: and I have written to him what I have joined here below.	25 Or, comme il approchait, Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui conjuraient le Seigneur, la tête couverte de terre et les reins ceints de cilices,
26 I pray you therefore, and request of you, that remembering favours both public and private, you will every man of you continue to be faithful to me and to my son.	26 prosternés au pied de l'autel, de leur être propice et d'être l'ennemi de leurs ennemis et l'adversaire de leurs adversaires, comme dit la loi.
27 For I trust that he will behave with I moderation and humanity, and following my intentions, will be gracious unto you.	27 Ainsi, après la prière, ayant pris les armes, et s'étant avancés assez loin de la ville, il s'arrêtèrent lorsqu'ils furent près des ennemis.
28 Thus the murderer and blasphemer, being grievously struck, as himself had treated others, died a miserable death in a strange country among the mountains.	28 Dès que le soleil commença à paraître, les deux armées engagèrent le combat, les uns ayant, outre leur valeur, le Seigneur même pour garant de la victoire et du succès, les autres n'ayant que leur courage pour guide dans la lutte.
29 But Philip that was brought up with him, carried away his body: and out of fear of the son of Antiochus, went into Egypt to Ptolemee Philometor.	29 Mais, au plus fort du combat, cinq hommes apparurent du ciel aux ennemis, sur des chevaux ornés de freins d'or, servant de guides aux Juifs.
	30 Deux d'entre eux, ayant Machabée au milieu d'eux, le couvraient de leurs armes, et le conservaient sain et sauf; mais ils lançaient des traits et la foudre contre les ennemis, qui tombaient frappés d'aveuglement et mis en désordre.
	31 Il y en eut vingt mille cinq cents de tués, et six cents cavaliers.
	32 Quant à Timothée, il s'enfuit à Gazara, place forte où commandait Chaeréas.
	33 Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui, pleins de joie, assiégèrent cette forteresse pendant quatre jours.
	34 Ceux qui étaient dedans, se confiant dans la force de la place, les maudissaient sans mesure et proféraient des paroles abominables.
	35 Mais, à l'aube du cinquième jour, vingt jeunes hommes de ceux qui étaient avec Machabée, irrités par ces blasphèmes, s'approchèrent courageusement de la muraille, et y montèrent avec une ardeur intrépide;
	36 et d'autres, y étant montés de même, commencèrent à mettre le feu aux tours et aux portes, et à brûler vifs ces blasphémateurs.
	37 Pendant deux jours entiers ils pillèrent la place, et ayant trouvé Timothée qui se cachait dans un certain lieu, ils le mirent à mort; ils tuèrent aussi son frère Chaeréas et Apollophanès.
	38 Cela fait, ils bénissaient par des hymnes et des cantiques le Seigneur, qui avait fait de grandes choses en Israël, et qui leur avait donné la victoire.
