1 And Jonathan saw that the time served him, and he chose certain men and sent them to Rome, to confirm and to renew the amity with them:	1 Jónatas, vendo que as circunstâncias lhe eram favoráveis, escolheu certos homens e enviou-os a Roma, a confirmar e renovar a amizade com os Romanos.
2 And he sent letters to the Spartans, and to other places according to the same form.	2 Mandou também aos Espartanos e a outros lugares cartas do mesmo teor.
3 And they went to Rome, and entered into the senate house, and said: Jonathan the high priest, and the nation of the Jews have sent us to renew the amity, and alliance as it was before.	3 Foram (os seus embaixadores) a Roma e entraram no senado, onde disseram: Jónatas, sumo sacerdote, e o povo judeu enviaram-nos aqui a renovar convosco a amizade e a aliança, como eram nos tempos passados.
4 And they gave them letters to their governors in every place, to conduct them into the land of Juda with peace.	4 (Os Romanos) deram-lhes cartas dirigidas aos (detentores da autoridade romana) de cada lugar, para eles os fazerem conduzir em paz até á Judeia.
5 And this is a copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 A cópia da carta, que Jónatas escreveu aos Espartanos, é a seguinte:
6 Jonathan the high priest, and the ancients of the nation, and the priests, and the rest of the people of the Jews, to the Spartans, their brethren, greeting.	6 Jónatas, sumo sacerdote, o conselho da nação, os sacerdotes e o resto do povo judeu, aos Espartanos, seus irmãos, saúde.
7 There were letters sent long ago to Onias the high priest from Arius who reigned then among you, to signify that you are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.	7 Em tempos passados foram enviadas cartas ao sumo sacerdote Onias por Ario, que reinava sobre vós, nas quais se lia que sois nossos irmãos, como se vê pela cópia que junto.
8 And Onias received the ambassador with honour: and received the letters wherein there was mention made of the alliance, and amity.	8 Onias acolheu com grande honra o mensageiro enviado e recebeu (favoravelmente) as cartas onde se falava de aliança e amizade.
9 We, though we needed none of these things, having for our comfort the holy books that are in our hands,	9 Nós, posto que não necessitemos destas coisas, pois temos por consolação os santos livros, que estão entre nossas mãos,
10 Chose rather to send to you to renew the brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers to you altogether: for there is a long time passed since you sent to us.	10 quisemos contudo enviar-vos mensageiros para renovar a fraternidade e a amizade, temendo não viessemos a ficar como estranhos a vosso respeito, visto ter já passado muito tempo, desde que cá mandastes (aquela embaixada).
11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our festivals, and other days, wherein it is convenient, remember you in the sacrifices that we offer, and in our observances, as it is meet, and becoming to remember brethren.	11 Em todo o tempo sem interrupção, nos dias solenes e nos outros dias sagrados, nos lembramos de vós nos sacrifícios que oferecemos e nas nossas orações, pois é justo e razoável lembrar os irmãos.
12 And we rejoice at your glory.	12 Rejubilamos com a vossa glória.
13 But we have had many troubles and wars on every side, and the kings that are round about us, have fought against us.	13 Quanto a nós, têm-nos cercado grandes tribulações e várias guerras, e têm-nos invadido os reis circunvizinhos.
14 But we would not be troublesome to you, nor the rest of our allies and friends in these wars.	14 Entretanto não quisemos ser pesados, nem a vós nem aos outros aliados e nossos amigos, em todos estes combates,
15 For we have had help from heaven, and we have been delivered, and our enemies are humbled.	15 porque temos o socorro do céu, e fomos livres, e os nossos inimigos foram humilhados.
16 We have chosen therefore Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to the Romans to renew with them the former amity and alliance.	16 Portanto escolhemos Numénio, filho de Antíoco, e Antípatro, filho de Jasão, os quais enviámos aos Romanos a renovar a antiga aliança e amizade com eles.
17 And we have commanded them to go also to you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters, concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.	17 Também lhes demos ordem de ir ter convosco, a saudar-vos da nossa parte e levar-vos as nossas cartas sobre a renovação da nossa confraternidade.
18 And now you shall do well to give us an answer hereto.	18 E agora dar-nos-eis gosto, respondendo-nos a isto.
19 And this is the copy of the letter which he had sent to Onias:	19 Eis a cópia da carta enviada (por Ario) a Onias:
20 Arius king of the Spartans to Onias the high priest, greeting.	20 Ario, rei dos Espartanos, ao sumo sacerdote Onias, saúde.
21 It is found in writing concerning the Spartans, and the Jews, that they are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham.	21 Achou-se aqui, num escrito sobre os Espartanos e os Judeus, que eles são irmãos e descendem de Abraão.
22 And now since this is come to our knowledge, you do well to write to us of your prosperity.	22 Agora, pois, desde que sabemos isto, fazeis bem em nos escrever acerca da vossa prosperidade.
23 And we also have written back to you: That our cattle, and our possessions are yours: and yours, ours. We therefore have commanded that these things should be told you.	23 Também nós vos escreveremos. Os vossos gados e os vossos bens são nossos, e os nossos são vossos. Isto é o que ordenamos que vos seja declarado da nossa parte.
24 Now Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come again with a greater army than before to fight against him.	24 Entretanto Jónatas, tendo ouvido dizer que os generais de Demétrio haviam tornado com um exército muito maior que o anterior, para pelejar contra ele,
25 So he went out from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amath: for he gave them no time to enter into his country.	25 partiu de Jerusalém e foi-lhes ao encontro, no país de Hamath, para não lhes dar tempo de entrarem pelas suas terras.
26 And he sent spies into their camp, and they came back and brought him word that they designed to come upon them in the night.	26 Mandou espiões ao acampamento (dos inimigos), os quais, depois de voltarem avisaram que eles tinham resolvido surpreendê-los de noite.
27 And when the sun was set, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms all night long ready to fight, and he set sentinels round about the camp.	27 Logo, pois, que se pôs o sol, mandou Jónatas aos seus que vigiassem e estivessem toda a noite sobre as armas, prontos para a peleja, e dispôs sentinelas em volta do acampamento.
28 And the enemies heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, and they were struck with fear, and dread in their heart: and they kindled fires in their camp.	28 Os inimigos, ao saberem que Jónatas com os seus se conservavam prestes para o combate, tiveram medo, ficaram apavorados e acenderam fogos no seu acampamento.
29 But Jonathan and they that were with him knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.	29 Mas Jónatas e os que com ele estavam não deram fé da sua retirada, até pela manhã, porque viam as fogueiras acesas.
30 And Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they had passed the river Eleutherus.	30 Então Jónatas foi atrás deles, mas não os pode apanhar, porque já tinham passado o rio Eleutero.
31 And Jonathan turned upon the Arabians that are called Zabadeans: and he defeated them, and took the spoils of them.	31 Dali marchou Jónatas contra os Árabes, chamados Zabadeus, desbaratou-os e tomou os seus despojos.
32 And he went forward, and came to Damascus, and passed through all that country.	32 Depois reuniu a sua gente e foi a Damasco, percorrendo toda aquela região.
33 Simon also went forth, and came as far as Ascalon, and the neighbouring fortresses, and he turned aside to Joppe, and took possession of it,	33 Ao mesmo tempo saiu Simão e foi até Ascalon e às fortalezas vizinhas; de lá partiu para Jope e tomou-a,
34 (For he heard that they designed to deliver the hold to them that took part with Demetrius,) and he put a garrison there to keep it.	34 porque ouviu dizer que eles queriam entregar a praça aos do partido de Demétrio, e pôs ali uma guarnição para a defender.
35 And Jonathan came back, and called together the ancients of the people, and he took a resolution with them to build fortresses in Judea,	35 Regressado Jónatas (a Jerusalém) convocou os anciães do povo e resolveu com eles levantar fortalezas na Judeia,
36 And to build up walls in Jerusalem, and raise a mount between the castle and the city, to separate it from the city, that so it might have no communication, and that they might neither buy nor sell.	36 altear os muros de Jerusalém e construir um muro de grande altura entre a fortaleza e a cidade, para a separar da cidade, de sorte que ficasse sem comunicação e se não pudesse lá comprar nem vender.
37 And they came together to build up the city: for the wall that was upon the brook towards the east was broken down, and he repaired that which is called Caphetetha:	37 Reunidos os operários para edificarem a cidade, desabou uma parte do muro, que estava sobre a torrente (do Cedron), da banda oriental, parte que foi restaurada com o nome de Cafenata.
38 And Simon built Adiada in Sephela, and fortified it, and set up gates and bars.	38 Simão também edificou Adida em Sefela, fortificou-a e pôs-lhe portas e ferrolhos.
39 Now when Tryphon had conceived a design to make himself king of Asia, and to take the crown, and to stretch out his hand against king Antiochus:	39 Trifão planejava, entretanto, fazer-se rei da Ásia, tomar o diadema e excluir o rei Antíoco.
40 Fearing lest Jonathan would not suffer him, but would fight against him: he sought to seize upon him, and to kill him. So he rose up and came to Bethsan.	40 Temendo que Jónatas lho impedisse e lhe declarasse guerra, buscava meios de se apoderar dele e de o matar. Levantando o seu acampamento, foi para Betsan.
41 And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle, and came to Bethsan.	41 Jónatas marchou ao seu encontro com quarenta mil homens escolhidos, para lhe dar batalha, e avançou até Betsan.
42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with a great army, he durst not stretch forth his hand against him,	42 Quando Trifão viu que Jónatas tinha chegado com um grande exército, temeu lançar-lhe a mão.
43 But received him with honour, and commended him to all his friends, and gave him presents: and he commanded his troops to obey him, as himself.	43 Recebeu-o com honra, recomendou-o a todos os seus amigos, deu-lhe presentes e mandou a todo o seu exército que lhe obedecesse, como a ele próprio.
44 And he said to Jonathan: Why hast thou troubled all the people, whereas we have no war?	44 Depois disse a Jónatas: Por que fatigaste inutilmente todo este povo, quando nós não temos guerra um com outro?
45 Now therefore send them back to their own houses: and choose thee a few men that may be with thee, and come with me to Ptolemais, and I will deliver it to thee, and the rest of the strong holds, and the army, and all that have any charge, and I will return and go away: for this is the cause of my coming.	45 Manda-os, pois, agora para suas casas; escolhe (apenas) entre eles alguns que fiquem contigo e vem comigo para Ptolemaida, que eu ta entregarei com as outras fortalezas, as outras tropas e com todos os que têm a intendência dos negócios; e depois me retirarei. Com efeito, para isto é que eu vim.
46 And Jonathan believed him, and did as he said: and sent away his army, and they departed into the land of Juda:	46 Jónatas acreditou nele e fez o que lhe disse; Despediu as suas tropas, que voltaram para a terra de Judá.
47 But he kept with him three thousand men: of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.	47 Reteve consigo (somente) três mil homens, dos quais mandou (ainda) dois mil para a Galileia; (só) mil foram com ele.
48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates of the city, and took him: and all them that came in with him they slew with the sword.	48 Mas, logo que Jónatas entrou em Ptolemaida, os Ptolemenses fecharam as portas da cidade, prenderam-no e passaram ao fio da espada todos os que o haviam acompanhado.
49 Then Tryphon sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathan's company.	49 Ao mesmo tempo, Trifão enviou as suas tropas e a cavalaria para a Galileia e para a grande planície, a fim de matarem todos os companheiros de Jónatas.
50 But they, when they understood that Jonathan and all that were with him were taken and slain, encouraged one another, and went out ready for battle.	50 Estes, porém, tendo subido que Jónatas fora preso e perecera com todos os que com ele estavam, uns aos outros se animaram, e saíram, em fileiras cerradas, dispostos a combater.
51 Then they that had come after them, seeing that they stood for their lives, returned back.	51 Os seus perseguidores, todavia, vendo-os resolvidos a defender suas vidas, tornaram para trás.
52 Whereupon they all came peaceably into the land of Juda. And they bewailed Jonathan, and them that had been with him, exceedingly: and Israel mourned with great lamentation.	52 Assim eles voltaram todos em paz para a terra de Judá. Choraram a Jónatas e aos seus companheiros, e ficaram muito receosos. Todo Israel tomou pesado luto.
53 Then all the heathens that were round about them, sought to destroy them. For they said:	53 Então todos os povos, que estavam ao redor deles, procuraram perdê-los, porque diziam:
54 They have no prince, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away the memory of them from amongst mem.	54 Não têm chefe nem quem os auxilie; ataquemo-los pois, agora, e apaguemos a sua memória entre os homens.
