And the king of Egypt gathered together an army, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships: and he sought to get the kingdom of Alexander by deceit, and join it to his own kingdom.1 Depois disto, o rei do Egipto ajuntou um exército inumerável, como a areia que está sobre a praia do mar, e um grande número de naus, procurando apoderar-se do reino de Alexandre por astúcia e juntá-lo ao seu reino.
And he went out into Syria with peaceable words, and they opened to him the cities, and met him: for king Alexander had ordered them to go forth to meet him, because he was his father in law.2 Marchou, pois, para a Síria com palavras de paz, e os habitantes das cidades abriam-lhe as portas e vinham-no receber, porque o rei Alexandre tinha mandado que saíssem a recebê-lo, visto que era seu sogro.
Now when Ptolemee entered into the cities, he put garrisons of soldiers in every city.3 Mas Ptolomeu, logo que entrava numa cidade, aí punha guarnição de (suas) tropas.
And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt with fire, and Azotus, and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad, and the graves of them that were slain in the battle, which they had made near the way.4 Quando chegou perto de Azot, mostraram-lhe o templo de Dagon queimado, a própria cidade e os seus subúrbios demolidos, os cadáveres por terra, e, ao longo do caminho, montões (de restos) daqueles que tinham sido mortos na batalha.
And they told the king that Jonathan had done these things, to make him odious: but the king held his peace.5 Disseram ao rei que Jónatas era quem tinha feito todos estes estragos, querendo assim torná-lo odioso, mas o rei manteve-se calado.
And Jonathan came to meet the king at Joppe with glory, and they saluted one another, and they lodged there.6 Jónatas foi com grande pompa encontrar-se com o rei em Jope, Cumprimentaram-se um ao outro e passaram ali a noite.
And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river, called Eleutherus: and he returned into Jerusalem.7 Jónatas acompanhou o rei até ao rio, que se chama Eleutero, e voltou para Jerusalém.
And king Ptolemee got the dominion of the cities by the sea side, even to Seleucia, and he devised evil designs against Alexander.8 o rei Ptolomeu apoderou-se de todas as cidades do litoral até Selêucia, que está sobre o mar, e forjava maus desígnios contra Alexandre.
And he sent ambassadors to Demetrius, saying: Come, let us make a league between us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in the kingdom of thy father.9 Enviou embaixadores a Demétrio, que lhe dissessem: Anda, façamos aliança um com outro, e eu te darei minha filha que Alexandre tem por mulher, e reinarás no reino de teu pai.
For I repent that I have given him my daughter: for he hath sought to kill me.10 Efectivamente estou arrependido de lhe ter dado minha filha, visto que procurou matar-me.
And he slandered him, because he coveted his kingdom.11 Acusava-o deste modo, pelo desejo que tinha do seu reino.
And he took away his daughter, and gave her to Demetrius, and alienated himself from Alexander, and his enmities were made manifest.12 Tirou-lhe sua filha, deu-a a Demétrio, rompendo com Alexandre e tornando manifesta a sua inimizade.
And Ptolemee entered into Antioch, and set two crowns upon his head, that of Egypt, and that of Asia.13 Ptolomeu entrou em Antioquia e pôs na sua cabeça dois diademas: um do Egipto e outro da Asia.
Now king Alexander was in Cilicia at that time: because they that were in those places had rebelled.14 O rei Aiexandre naquele tempo encontrava-se na Cilícia porque os habitantes dessa região tinham-se revoltado contra ele.
And when Alexander heard of it, he came to give him battle, and king Ptolemee brought forth his army, and met him with a strong power, and put him to flight.15 Quando, porém, Alexandre ouviu tal notícia, foi logo contra ele para o combater. O rei Ptolomeu fez sair a campo o seu exército, saiu-lhe ao encontro com grandes forças e pô-lo em fuga.
And Alexander fled into Arabia, there to be protected: and king Ptolemee was exalted.16 Alexandre fugiu para a Arábia, a ver se achava ali alguma protecção. E o rei Ptolomeu triunfou.
And Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it to Ptolemee.17 Zabdiel, (príncipe) Árabe, mandou cortar a cabeça a Alexandre e enviou-a a Ptolomeu.
And king Ptolemee died the third day after: and they that were in the strong holds were destroyed by them that were within the camp.18 Três dias depois morreu o rei Ptolomeu, e os (soldados) que estavam nas fortalezas foram mortos pelos seus habitantes.
And Demetrius reigned in the hundred and sixty-seventh year.19 Entrou Demétrio a reinar no ano cento e sessenta e sete.
In those days Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea, to take the castle that was in Jerusalem: and they made many engines of war against it.20 Naqueles dias Jónatas juntou os que estavam na Judeia, para combaterem a fortaleza que havia em Jerusalém, contra a qual levantou muitas máquinas de guerra.
Then some wicked men that hated their own nation, went away to king Demetrius, and told him that Jonathan was besieging the castle.21 Mas alguns homens iníquos, que aborreciam a sua gente, foram ter com o rei (Demétrio) e contaram-lhe que Jónatas tinha sitiado a fortaleza.
And when he heard it, he was angry: and forthwith he came to Ptolemais, and wrote to Jonathan, that he should not besiege the castle, but should come to him in haste, and speak to him.22 Demétrio, quando tal ouviu, ficou irritado e foi logo para Ptolemaida, donde escreveu a Jónatas que não sitiasse a fortaleza e que fosse sem demora ter com ele, para conferenciarem.
But when Jonathan heard this, he bade them besiege it still: and he chose some of the ancients of Israel, and of the priests, and put himself in danger.23 Porém, Jónatas, recebida esta carta, ordenou que se continuasse o cerco, e, escolhendo alguns dos anciães de Israel e dos sacerdotes, foi (com eles) expor-se ao perigo.
And he took gold, and silver, and raiment, and many other presents, and went to the king to Ptolemais, and he found favour in his sight.24 Levou consigo (muito) ouro, prata, vestes e outros numerosos presentes, e foi a Ptolemaida, a encontrar-se com o rei, junto de quem teve bom acolhimento.
And certain wicked men of his nation made complaints against him.25 Apesar disto, ainda alguns homens iníquos da sua nação formaram queixas contra ele.
And the king treated him as his predecessor had done before: and he exalted him in the sight of all his friends.26 Mas o rei tratou-o como o tinham tratado os príncipes seus predecessores; honrou-o, à vista de todos os seus amigos,
And he confirmed him in the high priesthood, and all the honours he had before, and he made him the chief of his friends.27 confirmou-o no sumo sacerdócio e em todas as honras, que antes tinha, e pô-lo entre os primeiros dos seus amigos.
And Jonathan requested of the king that he would make Judea free from tribute, and the three governments, and Samaria, and the confines thereof: and he promised him three hundred talents.28 Jónatas suplicou ao rei que concedesse Imunidade de tributos à Judeia e às três toparquias da gamaria, prometendo-lhe trezentos talentos.
And the king consented: and he wrote letters to Jonathan of all these things to this effect.29 O rei concordou e mandou expedir a Jónatas, sobre tudo isto, uma carta concebida nestes termos:
King Demetrius to his brother Jonathan, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.30 O rei Demétrio, ao seu irmão Jónatas e à nação dos Judeus, saúde.
We send you here a copy of the letter, which we have written to Lasthenes our parent concerning you, that you might know it.31 Enviamos-vos uma cópia da carta, que a vosso respeito escrevemos a Lastenes, nosso parente, para tomardes conhecimento dela. (Diz assim);
King Demetrius to Lasthenes his parent, greeting.32 O rei Demétrio, a Lastenes, seu pai, saúde.
We have determined to do good to the nation of the Jews who are our friends, and keep the things that are just with us, for their good will which they bear towards us.33 Resolvemos fazer bem à nação dos Judeus, que são nossos amigos e nos conservam fidelidade, por causa dos seus bons sentimentos para conosco.
We have ratified therefore unto them all the borders of Judea, and the three cities, Apherema, Lydda, and Ramatha, which are added to Judea, out of Samaria, and all their confines, to be set apart to all them that sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them every year, and for the fruits of the land, and of the trees.34 Confirmamos o seu domínio sobre todo o território da Judeia e dos três distritos de Efraim, Lida e Ramata, os quais foram anexos da província da gamaria à Judeia, com todos os seus territórios. Quanto a todos os que sacrificam em Jerusalém, isentamo-los dos impostos que o rei cobrava deles, cada ano, sobre o que lhes rendiam os frutos da terra e das árvores.
And as for other things that belonged to us of the tithes, and of the tributes, from this time we discharge them of them: the saltpans also, and the crowns that were presented to us.35 Renunciamos também desde agora a outros direitos que nos pertenciam de dízimos e de tributos, (renunciamos) aos impostos das salinas e às coroas (de ouro) que nos eram devidas.
We give all to them, and nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth and for ever.36 Todas estas coisas lhes damos ; e nada disto será anulado desde agora para sempre.
Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be given to Jonathan, and set upon the holy mountain, in a conspicuous place.37 Cuidai, pois, de tirar agora uma cópia deste decreto e entregai-a a Jónatas, para ser posta no monte santo (de Sião) em lugar público.
And king Demetrius seeing that the land was quiet before him, and nothing resisted him, sent away all his forces, every man to his own place, except the foreign army, which he had drawn together from the islands of the nations: so all the troops of his fathers hated him.38 O rei Demétrio; vendo que a terra estava sossegada diante dele e que nada lhe resistia, licenciou todo o seu exército, mandando cada um para sua casa, excepto as tropas estrangeiras, que tinha levantado nas ilhas das nações. Isto excitou contra ele o ódio de todas as tropas, que tinham servido a seus pais.
Now there was one Tryphon who had been of Alexander's party before: who seeing that all the army murmured against Demetrius, went to Emalchuel the Arabian, who brought up Antiochus the son of Alexander.39 Trifão, que antes havia sido do partido de Alexandre, quando viu que todo o exército murmurava contra Demétrio, foi logo ter com Emalcué, o Árabe, que educava Antíoco, filho de Alexandre.
And he pressed him much to deliver him to him, that he might be king in his father's place: and he told him all that Demetrius had done, and how his soldiers hated him. And he remained there many days.40 Fez-lhe muitas e grandes instâncias para que lho entregasse, a fim de o fazer reinar em lugar de seu pai, contando-lhe tudo o que Demétrio tinha feito e o ódio que o seu exército havia concebido contra ele. E lá se demorou muitos dias.
And Jonathan sent to king Demetrius, desiring that he would cast out them that were in the castle in Jerusalem, and those that were in the strong holds: because they fought against Israel.41 Entretanto Jónatas enviou embaixadores ao rei Demétrio, suplicando-lhe que deitasse fora os que estavam na cidadela de Jerusalém e nas outras fortalezas (da Judeia), porque faziam guerra a Israel.
And Demetrius sent to Jonathan, saying: I will not only do this for thee, and for thy people, but I will greatly honour thee, and thy nation, when opportunity shall serve.42 Demétrio mandou responder a Jónatas: Não só farei por ti e pela tua gente o que me pedes, mas cumular-vos-ei de honras, a ti e ao teu povo, logo que o tempo mo permita.
Now therefore thou shalt do well if thou send me men to help me: for all my army is gone from me.43 Agora farás bem se mandares tropas em meu socorro, porque todo o meu exército me abandonou.
And Jonathan sent him three thousand valiant men to Antioch: and they came to the king, and the king was very glad of their coming.44 Imediatamente mandou-lhe Jónatas para Antioquia três mil homens esforçados, que foram ter com o rei, o qual se alegrou muito com a sua chegada.
And they that were of the city assembled themselves together, to the number of a hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have killed the king.45 Reuniam-se dos habitantes da cidade cento e vinte mil homens, que queriam matar o rei.
And the king fled into the palace, and they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.46 O rei fugiu para o seu palácio, mas os habitantes da cidade tornaram-se senhores das ruas dela e começaram a atacá-lo.
And the king called the Jews to his assistance: and they came to him all at once, and they all dispersed themselves through the city.47 Então o rei chamou os Judeus em seu socorro, e eles juntaram-se todos ao pé dele; depois fizeram correrias pela cidade
And they slew in that day a hundred thousand men, and they set fire to the city, and got many spoils that day, and delivered the king.48 e mataram naquele dia cerca de cem mil homens, puseram fogo à cidade, tomaram naquele mesmo dia muitos despojos e livraram o rei.
And they that were of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would: and they were discouraged in their minds, and cried to the king, making supplication, and saying:49 Quando os da cidade viram que os Judeus se tinham apoderado dela, fazendo o que queriam, perderam a coragem e com deprecações suplicaram misericórdia ao rei, dizendo:
Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us, and the city.50 Dá-nos a tua dextra, e cessem os Judeus de nos atacar, a nós e à cidade.
And they threw down their arms, and made peace, and the Jews were glorified in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm, and were renowned throughout the kingdom, and returned to Jerusalem with many spoils.51 (Ao mesmo tempo) largaram as suas armas e fizeram a paz. Os Judeus adquiriram grande glória aos olhos do rei e de todos os que se achavam no seu reino, e voltaram para Jerusalém carregados de muitos despojos.
So king Demetrius sat in the throne of his kingdom: and the land was quiet before him.52 O rei Demétrio sentou-se no trono do seu reino e o país ficou em paz diante dele.
And he falsified all whatsoever he had said, and alienated himself from Jonathan, and did not reward him according to the benefits he had received from him, but gave him great trouble.53 Mas (este príncipe) faltou a tudo o que tinha prometido, separou-se de Jónatas e não correspondeu aos benefícios dele recebidos, antes o molestava muito.
And after this Tryphon returned, and with him Antiochus the young boy, who was made king, and put on the diadem.54 Depois disto, voltou Trifão, e com ele Antíoco, jovem ainda, que reinou e se pôs o diadema na cabeça.
And there assembled unto him all the hands which Demetrius had sent away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.55 Todas as tropas que Demétrio tinha despedido juntaram-se logo a Antíoco e combateram contra Demétrio, o qual voltou costas e fugiu.
And Tryphon took the elephants, and made himself master of Antioch.56 Trifão apoderou-se dos elefantes e tornou-se senhor de Antioquia.
And young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, saying: I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and I appoint thee ruler over the four cities, and to be one of the king's friends.57 Então o jovem Antioco escreveu a Jónatas nestes termos: Eu te confirmo no sumo pontificado e te constituo sobre os quatro distritos e (quero que) sejas dos amigos do rei.
And he sent him vessels of gold for his service, and he gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle:58 Mandou-lhe também vasos de ouro, utensílios, e deu-lhe poder de beber por copo de ouro, de se vestir de púrpura e de trazer afinete de ouro.
And he made his brother Simon governor from the borders of Tyre even to the confines of Egypt.59 A seu irmão Simão nomeou-o governador das terras que vão desde a Escada de Tiro até à fronteira do Egipto.
Then Jonathan went forth and passed through the cities beyond the river: and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves to him to help him, and he came to Ascalon, and they met him honourably out of the city.60 Então saiu Jónatas e percorreu as terras e as cidades de além do rio. Juntou-se a ele, para combater seu lado, todo o exército da Síria. Chegou assim a Ascalon, cujos habitantes saíram a recebê-lo com grades honras.
And he went from thence to Gaza: and they that were in Gaza shut him out: and he besieged it, and burnt all the suburbs round about, and took the spoils.61 Dali passou a Gaza, mas os de Gaza fecharam-lhe as portas. Ele sitiou-a, e queimou e saqueou os arredores da cidade.
And the men of Gaza made supplication to Jonathan, and he gave them the right hand: and he took their sons for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem: and he went through the country as far as Damascus.62 Então mandaram os de Gaza dizer a Jónatas que queriam capitular, e ele deu-lhes a sua mão direita (isto é, a paz), mas tomou os filhos dos principais, como reféns, e enviou-os a Jerusalém. Em seguida percorreu todo o país até Damasco.
And Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come treacherously to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great army, purposing to remove him from the affairs of the kingdom:63 Nesta ocasião Jónatas soube que os generais de Demétrio tinham ido com um poderoso exército a Cades, que está na Galileia, com o fim de o afastar dos negócios do reino.
And he went against them: but left his brother Simon in the country.64 Marchou contra eles, deixando na terra (de Judá) seu irmão Simão.
And Simon encamped against Bethsura, and assaulted it many days, and shut them up.65 Simão pôs cerco a Betsur, atacou-a durante muitos dias, e teve bloqueados os seus habitantes.
And they desired him to make peace, and he granted it them: and he cast them out from thence, and took the city, and placed a garrison in it.66 Então pediram-lhe paz, e ele lha concedeu; porém lançou-os fora dali, apoderou-se da cidade e pôs nela uma guarnição.
And Jonathan, and his army encamped by the water of Genesar, and before it was light they were ready in the plain of Asor.67 Jónatas e o seu exército acamparam junto do lago de Genesar, e, antes de amanhecer, penetraram na campina de Asor.
And behold the army of the strangers met him in the plain, and they laid an ambush for him in the mountains: but he went out against them.68 E eis que se encontrou diante do exército dos estrangeiros, que veio contra ele na campina, depois de lhe haver armado emboscadas nos montes.
And they that lay in ambush arose out of their places, and joined battle.69 Então os que estavam escondidos, saíram dos lugares da sua emboscada e travaram a batalha.
And all that were on Jonathan's side fled, and none was left of them, but Mathathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, chief captain of the army.70 Todos os que eram da parte de Jónatas fugiram, sem ficar um só, senão Matatias, filho de Absalão, e Judas, filho de Calfi, generais do seu exército.
And Jonathan rent his garments, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.71 Então Jónatas rasgou as suas vestes, pôs terra sobre a sua cabeça e orou.
And Jonathan turned again to them to battle, and he put them to flight, and they fought.72 Feito isto, voltou Jónatas para os combater, pelejou contra eles e pô-los em fuga.
And they of his part that fled saw this, and they turned again to him, and they all with him pursued the enemies even to Cades to their own camp, and they came even thither.73 Os do seu partido que fugiram, quando o viram pelejar tornaram logo a juntar-se a ele, e todos perseguiram (os inimigos) até Cades, onde estes tinham o acampamento. Aí mesmo assentaram arraiais.
And there fell of the aliens in that day three thousand men: and Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.74 Morreram naquele dia três mil homens do exército estrangeiro. Jónatas voltou para Jerusalém.
