1 Now it came to pass, after Saul was dead, that David returned from the slaughter of the Amalecites, and abode two days in Siceleg.	1 Après la mort de Saül, David, qui avait battu les Amalécites, était revenu à Sicéleg, et y avait passé deux jours.
2 And on the third day, there appeared a man who came out of Saul's camp, with his garments rent, and dust strewed on his head: and when he came to David, he fell upon his face, and adored.	2 Le troisième jour il parut un homme qui venait du camp de Saül; ses habits étaient déchirés, et sa tête couverte de poussière. S'étant approché de David, il le salua en se prosternant jusqu'à terre.
3 And David said to him: From whence comest thou? And he said to him: I am fled out of the camp of Israel.	3 Et David lui dit : D'où venez-vous? Et il répondit : Je me suis enfui du camp d'Israël.
4 And David said unto him: What is the matter that is come to pass? tell me. He said: The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people are fallen and dead: moreover Saul and Jonathan his son are slain.	4 David ajouta : Qu'est-il arrivé? dites-le-moi. Il lui répondit : Le peuple a fui du champ de bataille, et un grand nombre sont tombés et ont péri, et Saül même et Jonathas son fils ont été tués.
5 And David said to the young man that told him: How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son, are dead?	5 David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle : Comment savez-vous que Saül et son fils Jonathas sont morts?
6 And the young man that told him, said: I came by chance upon mount Gelboe, and Saul leaned upon his spear: and the chariots and horsemen drew nigh unto him,	6 Ce jeune homme lui répondit : J'étais venu par hasard sur la montagne de Gelboé, et Saül s'appuyait sur sa lance. Et comme des chars et des cavaliers s'approchaient,
7 And looking behind him, and seeing me, he called me. And I answered, Here am I.	7 il m'aperçut en se retournant, et m'appela. Le lui ai répondu: Me voici.
8 And he said to me: Who art thou? And I said to him: I am an Amalecite.	8 Et il me dit: Qui es-tu? Et je lui répondis : Je suis Amalécite.
9 And he said to me: Stand over me, and kill me: for anguish is come upon me, and as yet my whole life is in me.	9 Et il me dit : Appuie-toi sur moi, et tue-moi; car je suis dans l'angoisse, quoique toute ma vie soit encore en moi.
10 So standing over him, I killed him: for I knew that he could not live after the fall: and I took the diadem that was on his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm and have brought them hither to thee, my lord.	10 M'étant donc approché de lui, je le tuai; car je savais bien qu'il ne survirait pas à cette ruine. Et j'enlevai le diadème qui était sur sa tête, et le bracelet qu'il avait au bras; et je les ai apportés ici à vous, mon seigneur.
11 Then David took hold of his garments and rent them, and likewise all the men that were with him.	11 Alors David saisit ses vêtements et les déchira, et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui l'imitèrent.
12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until evening for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, because they were fallen by the sword.	12 Et ils se frappèrent la poitrine et pleurèrent, et ils jeûnèrent jusqu'au soir, à cause de Saül et de Jonathas son fils, et du peuple du Seigneur et de la maison d'Israël, qui avaient péri par l'épée.
13 And David said to the young man that told him: Whence art thou? He answered: I am the son of a stranger of Amalee.	13 Et David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait apporté cette nouvelle : D'où êtes-vous? Il lui répondit : Je suis fils d'un étranger Amalécite.
14 David said to him: Why didst thou not fear to put out thy hand to kill the Lord's anointed?	14 Et David lui dit : Comment n'avez-vous pas craint de porter la main sur le christ du Seigneur et de le tuer?
15 And David calling one of his servants, said: Go near and fall upon him. And he struck him so that he died.	15 Et David, appelant un de ses hommes, lui dit : Jetez-vous sur lui et tuez-le. Aussitôt il le frappa, et il mourut.
16 And David said to him: Thy blood be upon thy own head: for thy own mouth hath spoken against thee, saying: I have slain the Lord's anointed.	16 Et David ajouta : Que votre sang retombe sur votre téte; car votre bouche a déposé contre vous, en disant : C'est moi qui ai tué le christ du Seigneur.
17 And David made this kind of lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son.	17 Or David fit cette élégie sur la mort de Saül et de Jonathas son fils,
18 (Also he commanded that they should teach the children of Juda the use of the bow, as it is written in the book of the just.) And he said: Consider, O Israel, for them that are dead, wounded on thy high places.	18 et il ordonna d'enseigner ce chant de l'arc aux enfants de Juda, ainsi qu'il est écrit au livre des Justes. Et il dit: Considère, Israël, ceux qui sont morts sur tes coteaux, percés de coups.
19 The illustrious of Israel are slain upon thy mountains: how are the valiant fallen?	19 L'élite d'Israël a été tuée sur tes montagnes. Comment les vaillants sont-ils tombés?
20 Tell it not in Geth, publish it not in the streets of Ascalon: lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph,	20 Ne l'annoncez point dans Geth; ne le publiez pas dans les places publiques d'Ascalon, de peur que les filles des Philistins ne s'en réjouissent, que les filles des incirconcis n'en tressaillent d'allégresse.
21 Ye mountains of Gelboe, let neither dew, nor rain come upon you, neither be they fields of firstfruits: for there was cast away the shield of the valiant, the shield of Saul as though he had not been anointed with oil.	21 Montagnes de Gelboé, que la rosée et la pluie ne tombent jamais sur vous. Qu'il n'y ait point sur vous de champs à prémices; parce que c'est là qu'a été jeté le bouclier des héros, et le bouclier de Saül, comme s'il n'eût point été sacré de l'huile sainte.
22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the valiant, the arrow of Jonathan never turned back, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.	22 Saül et Jonathas, aimables et gracieux pendant leur vie, n'ont pas été séparés dans leur mort même. Ils étaient plus agiles que les aigles, et plus forts que les lions.
23 Saul and Jonathan, lovely, and comely in their life, even in death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with scarlet in delights, who gave ornaments of gold for your attire.	24 Filles d'Israël, pleurez sur Saül, qui vous revêtait d'écarlate avec délices, et qui vous donnait des ornements d'or pour vous parer.
25 How are the valiant fallen in battle? Jonathan slain in the high places?	25 Comment les forts sont-ils tombés dans le combat? Comment Jonathas a-t-il été tué sur vos montagnes?
26 I grieve for thee, my brother Jonathan: exceeding beautiful, and amiable to me above the love of women. As the mother loveth her only son, so did I love thee.	26 Je suis dans la douleur à cause de toi, Jonathas mon frère, si beau, digne d'être aimé d'un amour plus grand que celui qu'on a pour les femmes. Je t'aimais comme une mère aime son fils unique.
27 How are the valiant fallen, and the weapons of war perished?	27 Comment les forts sont-ils tombés? Comment les armes de guerre ont-elles péri?
