DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.1 From Egypt Abram went up to the Negeb with his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot accompanied him.
And he was very rich in possession of gold and silver.2 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.
And he returned by the way that he came, from the south to Bethel, to the place where before he had pitched his tent between Bethel and Hai:3 From the Negeb he traveled by stages toward Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly stood,
In the place of the altar which he had made before; and there he called upon the name of the Lord.4 the site where he had first built the altar; and there he invoked the LORD by name.
But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and herds of beasts, and tents.5 Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,
Neither was the land able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, and they could not dwell together.6 so that the land could not support them if they stayed together; their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.
Whereupon also there arose a strife between the herdsmen of Abram and of Lot. And at that time the Chanaanite and the Pherezite dwelled in that country.7 There were quarrels between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot's. (At this time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were occupying the land.)
Abram therefore said to Lot: Let there be no quarrel, I beseech thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen: for we are brethren.8 So Abram said to Lot: "Let there be no strife between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are kinsmen.
Behold the whole land is before thee: depart from me I pray thee: if thou wilt go to the left hand, I will take the right: if thou choose the right hand, I will pass to the left.9 Is not the whole land at your disposal? Please separate from me. If you prefer the left, I will go to the right; if you prefer the right, I will go to the left."
And Lot, lifting up his eyes, saw all the country about the Jordan, which was watered throughout, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha, as the paradise of the Lord, and like Egypt as one comes to Segor.10 Lot looked about and saw how well watered the whole Jordan Plain was as far as Zoar, like the LORD'S own garden, or like Egypt. (This was before the LORD had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
And Lot chose to himself the country about the Jordan, and he departed from the east: and they were separated one brother from the other.11 Lot, therefore, chose for himself the whole Jordan Plain and set out eastward. Thus they separated from each other;
Abram dwelt in the land of Chanaan; and Lot abode in the towns that were about the Jordan, and dwelt in Sodom.12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain, pitching his tents near Sodom.
And the men of Sodom were very wicked, and sinners before the face of the Lord, beyond measure.13 Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked in the sins they committed against the LORD.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him: Lift up thy eyes, and look from the place wherein thou now art, to the north and to the south, to the east and to the west.14 After Lot had left, the LORD said to Abram: "Look about you, and from where you are, gaze to the north and south, east and west;
All the land which thou seest, I will give to thee, and to thy seed for ever.15 all the land that you see I will give to you and your descendants forever.
And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: if any man be able to number the dust of the earth, he shall be able to number thy seed also.16 I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth; if anyone could count the dust of the earth, your descendants too might be counted.
Arise and walk through the land in the length, and in the breadth thereof: for I will give it to thee.17 Set forth and walk about in the land, through its length and breadth, for to you I will give it."
So Abram removing his tent came and dwelt by the vale of Mambre, which is in Hebron: and he built there an altar to the Lord.18 Abram moved his tents and went on to settle near the terebinth of Mamre, which is at Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.
