Secondo libro di Samuele 14

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 OR Ioab, figliuolo di Seruia, conoscendo che il cuor del re era inverso Absalom, mandò in Tecoa,	1 Now, Joab son of Zeruiah observed that the king was favourably inclined to Absalom.
2 e ne fece venire una donna accorta, alla quale disse: Deh! infigniti di far duolo, e vestiti di vestimenti da cordoglio, e non ungerti di olio; anzi sii a guisa di una donna, che già da molti giorni faccia cordoglio di un morto;	2 Joab therefore sent to Tekoa for a wise woman. 'Pretend to be in mourning,' he said. 'Dress yourself inmourning, do not perfume yourself; act like a woman who has long been mourning for the dead.
3 ed entra dal re, e digli tali e tali cose. E Ioab le mise le parole in bocca.	3 Then go to the king and say this to him.' And Joab put the words into her mouth which she was to say.
4 Quella donna Tecoita adunque andò a parlare al re, e si gittò in terra sopra la sua faccia, e si prosternò, e disse: Salvami, o re.	4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and, fal ing on her face to the ground, prostrated herself.'Help, my lord king!' she said.
5 E il re le disse: Che hai? Ed ella disse: Certo io sono una donna vedova, e il mio marito è morto.	5 The king said, 'What is the matter?' 'As you see,' she replied, 'I am a widow; my husband is dead.
6 Ora la tua servente avea due figliuoli, i quali vennero a contesa fuori a’ campi; e, non essendovi fra loro chi li spartisse, l’uno percosse l’altro, e l’uccise.	6 Your servant had two sons and out in the fields, where there was no one to intervene, they had aquarrel. And one of them struck the other one and kil ed him.
7 Ed ecco, tutto il parentado si è levato contro alla tua servente, dicendo: Dacci colui che ha percosso il suo fratello, acciocchè lo facciamo morire, per la vita del suo fratello ch’egli ha ucciso, e lo sterminiamo; benchè egli sia l’erede; e così spegneranno il carbone acceso che mi è rimasto, senza lasciare al mio marito alcun nome, nè alcun rimanente sopra la faccia della terra.	7 And now the whole clan has risen against your servant. "Give up the man who kil ed his brother," theysay, "so that we can put him to death, to atone for the life of the brother whom he has murdered; and thus weshall destroy the heir as wel ." By this means, they wil extinguish the ember stil left to me, leaving my husbandneither name nor survivor on the face of the earth.'
8 E il re disse alla donna: Vattene a casa tua, ed io darò ordine intorno al fatto tuo.	8 Then the king said to the woman, 'Go home; I myself shal give orders about your case.'
9 E la donna Tecoita disse al re: O re, mio signore, l’iniquità sia sopra me, e sopra la casa di mio padre; e sia innocente il re e il suo trono.	9 The woman of Tekoa said to the king, 'My lord king! May the guilt be on me and on my family; the kingand his throne are innocent of it.'
10 E il re le disse: Se alcuno parla contro a te, fallo venire a me, ed egli non ti toccherà più.	10 'Bring me the man who threatened you,' the king replied, 'and he shal never hurt you again.'
11 Ed ella disse: Deh! mentovi il re il Signore Iddio suo, che tu non lascerai che il vendicatore del sangue passi misura per uccidere; e che non istermineranno il mio figliuolo. Ed egli le disse: Come vive il Signore, non caderà pure un capello del tuo figliuolo a terra.	11 She then said, 'Let the king be pleased to pronounce the name of Yahweh your God, so that theavenger of blood may not do greater harm and destroy my son.' 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'not one of yourson's hairs shal fal to the ground!'
12 E la donna disse: Deh! lascia che la tua servente dica una parola al re, mio signore. Ed egli le disse: Parla.	12 Then the woman said, 'Permit your servant to say something else to my lord the king.' 'Go on,' hesaid.
13 E la donna disse: Perchè dunque hai tu pensato una cosa simile a questa contro al popolo di Dio? e il re parlando in questa maniera, è in certo modo colpevole, non facendo tornar colui ch’egli ha cacciato.	13 The woman said, 'Why then has the king, who by giving this verdict has condemned himself,conceived the idea, against God's people's interests, of not bringing home the son whom he has banished?
14 Perciocchè noi per certo morremo, e saremo simili ad acqua sparsa in terra, la qual non si può raccogliere; e Iddio non ha riguardo ad alcuna persona; pensi adunque il re alcun modo, che colui ch’è cacciato non rimanga scacciato da lui.	14 We are al mortal; we are like water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, nor doesGod raise up a corpse; let the king therefore make plans for his banished son not to remain far away from him inexile.
15 Ed ora ciò che io son venuta per parlare di questa cosa al re, mio signore, è stato perchè il popolo mi ha fatto paura; onde la tua servente ha detto: Ora io parlerò col re; forse il re farà ciò che la sua servente gli dirà.	15 'Now, the reason why I came to speak about this to my lord the king is that I was being intimidated,and your servant thought, "I shal speak to the king; perhaps the king will do what his servant asks.
16 Se il re acconsente di liberar la sua servente dalla mano di colui che vuole sterminar me, e insieme il mio figliuolo, dall’eredità del Signore; la tua servente ha anche detto:	16 Surely the king wil consent to save his servant from the clutches of the man who is trying to cut bothme and my son off from God's heritage.
17 Or sarà la parola del re, mio signore, a tranquillità; perciocchè il re, mio signore, è come un angelo di Dio, per udire il bene e il male; e il Signore Iddio tuo sarà teco.	17 Let a word from my lord the king, restore the peace!" your servant thought, "for my lord the king islike the Angel of God in understanding good and evil." May Yahweh your God be with you!'
18 E il re rispose, e disse alla donna: Deh! non celarmi ciò che io ti domanderò. E la donna disse: Parli pure il re, mio signore.	18 Replying to the woman, the king said, 'Now do not evade the question which I am going to ask you.'The woman said, 'Let my lord the king ask his question.'
19 E il re disse: Non ha Ioab tenuto mano a farti far tutto questo? E la donna rispose, e disse: Come l’anima tua vive, o re, mio signore, ei non si può sfuggire nè a destra, nè a sinistra, di cosa alcuna che il re, mio signore, ha detta; perciocchè Ioab, tuo servitore, è quel che mi ha ordinato questo; ed egli stesso ha poste in bocca alla tua servente tutte queste parole.	19 'Is not Joab's hand behind you in all this?' the king asked. The woman replied, 'As you live, my lordking, I cannot escape what my lord the king says, either to right or to left. Yes, it was your servant Joab whogave me my orders; he put al these words into your servant's mouth.
20 Ioab, tuo servitore, ha fatto questo per trasformare il negozio; ma il mio signore è savio come un angelo di Dio, per conoscer tutto quello che si fa in terra	20 Your servant Joab did this to approach the matter indirectly, but my lord has the wisdom of the Angelof God; he knows everything that happens on earth!'
21 Allora il re disse a Ioab: Ecco, ora tu hai condotto questo affare; va’ dunque, e fa’ ritornare il giovane Absalom.	21 The king then said to Joab, 'Very wel , the suit is granted. Go and bring the young man Absalomback.'
22 E Ioab si gittò in terra sopra la sua faccia, e si prosternò, e benedisse il re, e disse: Oggi conosce il tuo servitore che io ho trovata grazia appo te, o re, mio signore; poichè il re ha fatto ciò che il suo servitore gli ha detto.	22 Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king. 'My lord king,' Joab said,'today your servant knows that he has won your favour, since the king has done what his servant asked.'
23 Ioab adunque si levò, e andò in Ghesur, e ne menò Absalom in Gerusalemme.	23 Joab then set off, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.
24 E il re disse: Riducasi a casa sua, e non vegga la mia faccia. Absalom adunque si ridusse a casa sua, e non vide la faccia del re.	24 The king, however, said, 'Let him retire to his own house; he is not to appear in my presence.' SoAbsalom retired to his own house and was not received by the king.
25 Ora in tutto Israele non vi era uomo alcuno che fosse pari ad Absalom in eccellente bellezza; non vi era in lui alcun difetto, dalla pianta del piè fino alla sommità del capo.	25 In al Israel there was no one more praised for his beauty than Absalom; from the sole of his foot tothe crown of his head, he could not be faulted.
26 E, quando egli si facea tondere il capo, il che facea ogni anno, perciocchè gli pesava troppo, egli pesava le chiome del suo capo, ed erano di peso di dugento sicli a peso del re.	26 When he cut his hair -- he shaved it once a year because his hair got too heavy -- he would weighthe hair: two hundred shekels, king's weight.
27 E nacquero ad Absalom tre figliuoli, e una figliuola, il cui nome era Tamar; e fu una bella donna	27 To Absalom were born three sons and one daughter called Tamar; she was a beautiful woman.
28 Ed Absalom dimorò in Gerusalemme due anni, senza vedere la faccia del re.	28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without being received by the king.
29 Ed Absalom mandò per Ioab, per mandarlo al re. Ma egli non volle venire a lui. Ed Absalom mandò per lui ancora la seconda volta; ma egli non volle venire.	29 Absalom then summoned Joab, intending to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him.He sent for him a second time, but still he would not come.
30 Ed Absalom disse a’ suoi servitori: Ecco il campo di Ioab, ch’è presso del mio, dove egli ha dell’orzo; andate, e mettetevi il fuoco. E i servitori di Absalom misero il fuoco in quel campo.	30 At this, Absalom said to his retainers, 'Look, Joab's field is next to mine and he has barley in it; goand set it on fire.' Absalom's retainers set fire to the field.
31 E Ioab si levò, e venne ad Absalom in casa, e gli disse: Perchè hanno i tuoi servitori messo il fuoco nel mio campo?	31 Joab then stirred himself, went to Absalom in his house and asked, 'Why have your retainers set myfield on fire?'
32 Ed Absalom disse a Ioab: Ecco, io ti avea mandato a dire: Vieni qua, ed io ti manderò al re, a dirgli: Perchè sono io venuto di Ghesur? meglio sarebbe per me che io vi fossi ancora; ora dunque fa’ che io vegga la faccia del re; e se in me vi è alcuna iniquità, facciami morire.	32 Absalom replied to Joab, 'Look, I sent word to you: Come here, so that I can send you to the king tosay, "Why come back from Geshur? Better for me to have been there still!" Now I want to be received by theking, and if I am guilty, let him put me to death!'
33 Ioab adunque venne al re, e gli rapportò la cosa. E il re chiamò Absalom; ed egli venne a lui, e si prosternò in terra davanti a lui sopra la sua faccia. E il re baciò Absalom	33 Joab went to the king and told him this. He then summoned Absalom, who prostrated himself with hisface to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.
