1 El Señor dijo a Moisés:	1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 «Tienes que vengar a Israel de los madianitas, después irás a reunirte con los tuyos».	2 “First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites, and then you shall be gathered to your people.”
3 Entonces Moisés dijo al pueblo: «Que algunos de ustedes se equipen para el combate y ataquen a Madián, para ejecutar contra ellos la venganza del Señor.	3 And immediately Moses said: “Arm the men among you for a battle, so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.
4 Deberán enviar al combate mil hombres por cada una de las tribus de Israel».	4 Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”
5 Entre las divisiones de Israel se reclutaron doce mil hombres equipados para la guerra, a razón de mil hombres por tribu,	5 And they gave one thousand from each tribe, that is, twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.
6 y Moisés los envió al combate, junto con Pinjás, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, que llevaba consigo los vasos sagrados y las trompetas para lanzar el grito de guerra.	6 And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.
7 Ellos pelearon contra Madián, como el Señor lo había ordenado a Moisés, y mataron a todos los varones.	7 And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, they killed all the men.
8 Además de otras víctimas, mataron a los cinco reyes de Madián: Eví, Réquem, Sur, Jur y Reba. También pasaron al filo de la espada a Balaam hijo de Beor.	8 And they put to death by the sword their kings: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five leaders of the nation, and also Balaam the son of Beor.
9 Los israelitas tomaron cautivas a las mujeres y a los hijos de los madianitas, y se llevaron como botín todos sus animales, sus rebaños y sus bienes.	9 And they seized their women and little ones, and all their cattle, and all their goods; whatever they were able to have, they despoiled.
10 Además incendiaron las ciudades donde ellos habitaban y sus campamentos.	10 Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.
11 Luego recogieron todo el botín –tanto hombres como animales–	11 And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized, both of men and of beasts.
12 y se lo llevaron a Moisés, al sacerdote Eleazar y a toda la comunidad de los israelitas, que estaban acampados en las estepas de Moab, junto al Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	12 And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
13 Cuando Moisés, el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los jefes de la comunidad salieron a recibirlos fuera del campamento,	13 Then Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.
14 Moisés se irritó contra los comandantes del ejército y contra los oficiales de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados, que volvían de la expedición,	14 And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,
15 y les dijo: «¿Por qué han perdonado la vida a todas las mujeres?	15 said: “Why have you spared the females?
16 Fueron ellas las que, por instigación de Balaam indujeron a los israelitas a ser infieles al Señor en el incidente de Peor, y por eso la comunidad del Señor fue azotada por la plaga.	16 Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam, and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?
17 Por lo tanto, maten a todos los niños varones y a todas las mujeres que hayan tenido relaciones con un hombre.	17 Therefore, put to death all of them: whatever is of the male sex, even among the little ones, and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.
18 Perdonen, en cambio, a las jóvenes que no hayan tenido relaciones con un hombre.	18 But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.
19 En cuanto a ustedes, quédense fuera del campamento durante siete días; y en cualquiera de ustedes o de los cautivos que haya matado a una persona o haya tocado un cadáver, deberá purificarse al tercero y al séptimo día.	19 And remain beyond the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a man, or who has touched one that was killed, shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.
20 También deberán purificar todas las prendas de vestir y todos los objetos de piel, de cuero de cabra o de madera».	20 And all of the spoils, whether it is a garment, or a vessel, or another useful thing, made from the pelts or hair of goats, or from wood, shall be expiated.”
21 Entonces el sacerdote Eleazar dijo a las tropas de habían participado de la batalla: «Esta es una prescripción de la ley que el Señor dictó a Moisés: «Todo lo que resiste al fuego,	21 Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought: “This is the precept of the law, which the Lord has commanded Moses:
22 ya sea oro, plata, bronce, hierro, estaño o plomo,	22 Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,
23 lo harán pasar por el fuego para que sea purificado, aunque también deberá ser purificado con agua lustral; en cambio, harán pasar sólo por el agua lo que no puede resistir al fuego.	23 and all that may be able to pass through fire, shall be purified by fire. But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.
24 Al séptimo día ustedes lavarán su ropa y quedarán puros. Después podrán entrar en el campamento».	24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and, after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”
25 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés:	25 And the Lord also said to Moses:
26 «Tú, el sacerdote Eleazar y los jefes de familia de la comunidad harán el inventario del botín que ha sido capturado, tanto hombres como animales.	26 “Take the sum of those things which were captured, from man even to beast, you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.
27 Después lo repartirás, por partes iguales, entre los combatientes que participaron de la campaña y el resto de la comunidad.	27 And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought, and among the remainder of the multitude.
28 Además, debes separar para el Señor, como tributo de los guerreros que han ido al combate, una vida de cada quinientas, tanto de las personas como del ganado mayor, de los asnos y del ganado menor.	28 And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle: one soul out of five hundred, as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.
29 Esto lo tomarás de la mitad que les corresponda y se lo entregarás al sacerdote Eleazar como un tributo para el Señor.	29 And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.
30 De la mitad que corresponda a los demás israelitas, tanto de las personas como de los animales –del ganado mayor, de los asnos y del ganado menor– tomarás una vida por cada cincuenta y se las entregarás a los levitas que realizan tareas en la Morada del Señor».	30 Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans, and of oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and of all living things, and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”
31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron lo que el Señor había ordenado.	31 And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.
32 El total del botín –además de los despojos que habían recogido las tropas– ascendió a 675.000 cabezas de ganado menor,	32 Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
33 72.000 de ganado mayor,	33 seventy-two thousand oxen,
34 61.000 asnos,	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 y 32.000 personas, a saber, las jóvenes que no habían tenido relaciones con un hombre.	35 and thirty-two thousand human lives, of the female sex, who had not known men.
36 Por lo tanto, la mitad correspondiente a los que habían participado de la campaña fueron 337.500 cabezas de ganado menor,	36 And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle: three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.
37 y el tributo para el Señor fue de 675;	37 From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;
38 36.000 cabezas de ganado mayor, y el tributo para el Señor, 72;	38 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen;
39 30.500 asnos, y el tributo para el Señor, 61.	39 from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, sixty-one donkeys.
40 Las personas fueron 16.000, y el tributo para el Señor, 32.	40 From the sixteen thousand human souls, there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.
41 Moisés entregó al sacerdote Eleazar el tributo recogido para el Señor, como él se lo había ordenado.	41 And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, just as had been commanded of him,
42 La parte correspondiente a los otros israelitas –que Moisés había tomado del botín de los combatientes–	42 from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.
43 sumó 337.500 cabezas de ganado menor,	43 Yet truly, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude, that is, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
44 36.000 cabezas de ganado mayor,	44 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,
45 30.500 asnos,	45 and from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
46 y 16.000 personas.	46 and from the sixteen thousand persons,
47 De esta mitad correspondiente a los israelitas, Moisés tomó cada uno de cada cincuenta hombres y animales, y se los entregó a los levitas que realizaban tareas en la Morada del Señor, como el Señor se lo había ordenado.	47 Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had instructed.
48 Los comandantes de las tropas y los jefes de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados se acercaron a Moisés,	48 And when the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions had approached Moses, they said:
49 y el dijeron: «Hemos hechos el recuento de los soldados que están en nuestras órdenes y no falta ni uno solo.	49 “We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and indeed not one was lacking.
50 Por eso hemos traído, como ofrenda al Señor, los objetos de oro que ha recogido cada uno: pulseras, brazaletes, anillos, aros y pendientes. Así se hará en favor nuestro el rito de expiación delante del Señor».	50 For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, in anklets and arm bands, rings and bracelets, and little chains, so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”
51 Entonces Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron de ellos todo ese oro, todas esas joyas.	51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,
52 El oro que los oficiales de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados ofrecieron como tributo al Señor, llegó a un total de dieciséis mil setecientos cincuenta siclos.	52 weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the tribunes and the centurions.
53 Entre la tropa, en cambio, cada uno guardó para sí lo que había recogido.	53 For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.
54 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de los oficiales, y lo llevaron a la Carpa del Encuentro, como memorial de los israelitas delante del Señor.	54 And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony, as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.
