1 porque la mala fama heredará vergüenza y oprobio: esta es la suerte del pecador que habla con doblez	1 for a bad name will earn you shame and reproach, as happens to the double-talking sinner.
2 No te dejes arrastrar por el capricho de tu pasión, para no ser despedazado como un toro:	2 Do not get carried aloft on the wings of passion, for fear your strength tear itself apart like a bul ,
3 devorarías tus ramas, perderías tus frutos y de convertirías en un tronco seco.	3 and you devour your own foliage and destroy your own fruit and end by making yourself like a piece of dried-up wood.
4 Una pasión violenta pierde al que la tiene y hace que sus enemigos se rían de él.	4 An evil temper destroys the person who has it and makes him the laughing-stock of his enemies.
5 Las palabras dulces multiplican los amigos y un lenguaje amable favorece las buenas relaciones.	5 A kindly turn of speech attracts new friends, a courteous tongue invites many a friendly response.
6 Que sean muchos los que te saludan, pero el que te aconseja, sea uno entre mil.	6 Let your acquaintances be many, but for advisers choose one out of a thousand.
7 Si ganas un amigo, gánalo en la prueba, y no le des confianza demasiado pronto.	7 If you want to make a friend, take him on trial, and do not be in a hurry to trust him;
8 Porque hay amigos ocasionales, que dejan de serlo en el día de aflicción.	8 for one kind of friend is so only when it suits him but wil not stand by you in your day of trouble.
9 Hay amigos que se vuelven enemigos, y para avergonzarte, revelan el motivo de la disputa.	9 Another kind of friend wil fal out with you and to your dismay make your quarrel public,
10 Hay amigos que comparten tu mesa y dejan de serlo en el día de la aflicción.	10 and a third kind of friend wil share your table, but not stand by you in your day of trouble:
11 Mientras te vaya bien, serán como tú mismo y hablarán abiertamente con tus servidores;	11 when you are doing well he wil be your second self, ordering your servants about;
12 pero si te va mal, se pondrán contra ti y se esconderán de tu vista.	12 but, if disaster befal s you, he wil recoil from you and keep out of your way.
13 Sepárate de tus enemigos y sé precavido con tus amigos.	13 Keep well clear of your enemies, and be wary of your friends.
14 Un amigo fiel no tiene precio, no hay manera de estimar su valor.	14 A loyal friend is a powerful defence: whoever finds one has indeed found a treasure.
15 Un amigo fiel no tiene precio, no hay manera de estimar su valor.	15 A loyal friend is something beyond price, there is no measuring his worth.
16 Un amigo fiel es un bálsamo de vida, que encuentran los que temen al Señor.	16 A loyal friend is the elixir of life, and those who fear the Lord will find one.
17 El que teme al Señor encamina bien su amistad, porque como es él, así también será su amigo.	17 Whoever fears the Lord makes true friends, for as a person is, so is his friend too.
18 Hijo mío, desde tu juventud, busca la instrucción, y hasta en tu vejez, encontrarás la sabiduría.	18 My child, from your earliest youth choose instruction, and til your hair is white you wil keep findingwisdom.
19 Acércate a ella como el que ara y el que siembra, y espera pacientemente sus buenos frutos: al cultivarla, te fatigarás un poco, pero muy pronto comerás de sus productos.	19 Like ploughman and sower, cultivate her and wait for her fine harvest, for in tilling her you wil toil a littlewhile, but very soon you wil be eating her crops.
20 ¡Qué dura les parece a los ignorantes! El insensato no se mantiene fiel a ella:	20 How very harsh she is to the undisciplined! The senseless does not stay with her for long:
21 ella lo oprime como una piedra pesada y no tarda en sacársela de encima.	21 she wil weigh as heavily on the senseless as a touchstone and such a person will lose no time inthrowing her off;
22 Porque la sabiduría hace honor a su nombre y no se manifiesta a muchos.	22 for Wisdom is true to her name, she is not accessible to many.
23 Escucha, hijo mío, acepta mi doctrina y no rechaces mi consejo.	23 Listen, my child, and take my advice, do not reject my counsel:
24 Mete tus pies en sus cepos y tu cuello en su collar.	24 put your feet into her fetters, and your neck into her collar;
25 Doblega tus espaldas y carga con ella, y no te irrites por sus cadenas.	25 offer your shoulder to her burden, do not be impatient of her bonds;
26 Acércate a ella con toda tu alma y permanece en su camino con todas tus fuerzas.	26 court her with al your soul, and with al your might keep in her ways;
27 Sigue sus huellas y búscala: la sabiduría se te dará a conocer, y una vez que la poseas, no la dejes,	27 search for her, track her down: she wil reveal herself; once you hold her, do not let her go.
28 porque al fin encontrarás en ella el descanso y ella se convertirá en tu alegría.	28 For in the end you wil find rest in her and she wil take the form of joy for you:
29 Sus cepos serán un refugio poderoso y sus collares, un manto de gloria.	29 her fetters you will find a mighty defence, her col ars, a precious necklace.
30 Su yugo será un adorno de oro y sus cadenas, un tejido de jacinto.	30 Her yoke wil be a golden ornament, and her bonds be purple ribbons;
31 Te revestirás de ella como de un manto de gloria y te la ceñirás como una corona de júbilo.	31 you wil wear her like a robe of honour, you wil put her on like a crown of joy.
32 Si quieres, hijo mío, serás instruido, y si pones empeño, sabrás desenvolverte.	32 If you wish it, my child, you can be taught; apply yourself, and you will become intel igent.
33 Si te gusta escuchar, aprenderás, y si prestas atención, llegarás a ser sabio.	33 If you love listening, you will learn, if you pay attention, you will become wise.
34 Frecuenta las reuniones de los ancianos y si hay algún sabio, adhiérete a él.	34 Attend the gathering of elders; if there is a wise man there, attach yourself to him.
35 Procura escuchar todo lo que se refiera a Dios y que no se te escapen las máximas profundas.	35 Listen willingly to any discourse coming from God, do not let wise proverbs escape you.
36 Si ves a un hombre inteligente, ve en seguida hacia él y que tus pies gasten el umbral de su puerta.	36 If you see a man of understanding, visit him early, let your feet wear out his doorstep.
37 Examina detenidamente los preceptos del Señor y medita sin cesar sus mandamientos: él mismo afirmará tu corazón y te dará la sabiduría que deseas.	37 Reflect on the injunctions of the Lord, busy yourself at al times with his commandments. He wilstrengthen your mind, and the wisdom you desire will be granted you.
