1 Mientras tanto, el rey Antíoco recorría las provincias de la meseta. Allí se enteró de que en Persia había una ciudad llamada Elimaida, célebre por sus riquezas, su plata y su oro.	1 Now king Antiochus was going through the higher countries, and he heard that the city of Elymais in Persia was greatly renowned, and abounding in silver and gold.
2 Ella tenía un templo muy rico, donde se guardaban armaduras de oro, corazas y armas dejadas allí por Alejandro, hijo de Filipo y rey de Macedonia, el primero que reinó sobre los griegos.	2 And that there was in it a temple, exceeding rich: and coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields which king Alexander, son of Philip the Macedonian that reigned first in Greece, had left there.
3 Antíoco se dirigió a esa ciudad para apoderarse de ella y saquearla, pero no lo consiguió, porque los habitantes de la ciudad, al conocer sus planes,	3 Lo, he came, and sought to take the city and to pillage it: But he was not able, because the design was known to them that were in the city.
4 le opusieron resistencia. El tuvo que huir y se retiró de allí muy amargado para volver a Babilonia.	4 And they rose up against him in battle, and he fled away from thence, and departed with great sadness, and returned towards Babylonia.
5 Cuando todavía estaba en Persia, le anunciaron que la expedición contra el país de Judá había fracasado.	5 And whilst he was in Persia, there came one that told him, how the armies that were in the land of Juda were put to flight:
6 Le comunicaron que Lisias había ido al frente de un poderoso ejército, pero había tenido que retroceder ante los judíos, y que estos habían acrecentado su poder, gracias a las armas y al cuantioso botín tomado a los ejércitos vencidos.	6 And that Lysias went with a very great power, and was put to flight before the face of the Jews, and that thy were grown strong by the armour, and power, and store of spoils, which they had gotten out of the camps which they had destroyed:
7 Además, habían destruido la Abominación que él había erigido sobre el altar de Jerusalén y habían rodeado el Santuario de altas murallas como antes, haciendo lo mismo con Betsur, que era una de las ciudades del rey.	7 And that they had thrown down the abomination which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem, and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls as before, and Bethsura also his city.
8 Al oír tales noticias, el rey quedó consternado, presa de una violenta agitación, y cayó en cama enfermo de tristeza, porque las cosas no le habían salido como él deseaba.	8 And it came to pass when the king heard these words, that he was struck with fear, and exceedingly moved: and he laid himself down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not fallen out to him as he imagined.
9 Así pasó muchos días, sin poder librarse de su melancolía, hasta que sintió que se iba a morir.	9 And he remained there many days: for great grief came more and more and more upon him, and he made account that he should die.
10 Entonces hizo venir a todos sus amigos y les dijo: «No puedo conciliar el sueño y me siento desfallecer.	10 And he called for all his friends, and said to them: Sleep is gone from my eyes, and I am fallen away, and my heart is cast down for anxiety.
11 Yo me pregunto cómo he llegado al estado de aflicción y de amargura en que ahora me encuentro, yo que era generoso y amado mientras ejercía el poder.	11 And I said in my heart: Into how much tribulation am I come, and into what floods of sorrow, wherein now I am: I that was pleasant and beloved in my power!
12 Pero ahora caigo en la cuenta de los males que causé en Jerusalén, cuando robé los objetos de plata y oro que había allí y mandé exterminar sin motivo a los habitantes de Judá.	12 But now I remember the evils that I have done in Jerusalem, from whence also I took away all the spoils of gold, and of silver that were in it, and I sent to destroy the inhabitants of Juda without cause.
13 Reconozco que por eso me suceden todos estos males y muero de pesadumbre en tierra extranjera».	13 I know therefore that for this cause these evils have found me: and behold I perish with great grief in a strange land.
14 Luego, llamó a Filipo, uno de sus Amigos, y lo puso al frente de todo su reino.	14 Then he called Philip, one of his friends, and he made him regent over all his kingdom.
15 Le entregó su diadema, su manto y su anillo, encargándole que dirigiera a su hijo Antíoco y lo educara para que fuera rey.	15 And he gave him the crown, and his robe, and his ring, that he should go to Antiochus his son, and should bring him up for the kingdom.
16 El rey Antíoco murió en aquel lugar, el año ciento cuarenta y nueve.	16 So king Antiochus died there in the year one hundred and forty-nine.
17 Cuando Lisias se enteró de la muerte del rey, puso en el trono a su hijo Antíoco, que él había educado desde niño, dándole el sobrenombre de Eupátor.	17 And Lysias understood that the king was dead, and he set up Antiochus his son to reign, whom he brought up young: and he called his name Eupator.
18 La gente de la Ciudadela tenía confinados a los israelitas alrededor del Santuario, y no perdía ocasión de hacerles mal y de apoyar a los paganos.	18 Now they that were in the castle, had shut up the Israelites round about the holy places: and they were continually seeking their hurt, and to strengthen the Gentiles.
19 Judas resolvió acabar con ellos y convocó a todo el ejército para sitiarlos.	19 And Judas purposed to destroy them: and he called together all the people, to besiege them.
20 El año ciento cincuenta, se reunieron todos y sitiaron la Ciudadela, construyendo torres de asalto y empalizadas.	20 And they came together, and besieged them in the year one hundred and fifty, and they made battering slings and engines.
21 Pero varios de los sitiados rompieron el cerco y se les unieron algunos renegados de Israel,	21 And some of the besieged got out: and some wicked men of Israel joined themselves unto them.
22 que acudieron al rey para decirle: «¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar sin hacernos justicia y sin vengar a nuestros hermanos?	22 And they went to the king, and said: How long dost thou delay to execute the judgment, and to revenge our brethren?
23 Nosotros aceptamos de buen grado servir a tu padre, cumplir sus órdenes y obedecer sus decretos.	23 We determined to serve thy father and to do according to his orders, and obey his edicts:
24 Por eso, nuestros compatriotas han sitiado la Ciudadela y nos tratan como extraños. Más aún, han matado a los nuestros que caían en sus manos y han confiscado nuestros bienes.	24 And for this they of our nation are alienated from us, and have slain as many of us as they could find, and have spoiled our inheritances.
25 Y no sólo han levantado su mano contra nosotros, sino que también sobre todos los países limítrofes,	25 Neither have they put forth their hand against us only, but also against all our borders.
26 Ahora mismo tienen sitiada la Ciudadela de Jerusalén para apoderarse de ella y han fortificado el Santuario y la ciudad de Betsur.	26 And behold they have approached this day to the castle of Jerusalem to take it, and they have fortified the stronghold of Bethsura:
27 Si no te adelantas rápidamente, harán cosas mayores todavía y ya no podrás detenerlos».	27 And unless thou speedily prevent them, they will do greater things than these, and thou shalt not be able to subdue them.
28 El rey, al oír esto, se enfureció y convocó a todos sus Amigos, a los capitanes del ejército y a los comandantes de caballería.	28 Now when the king heard this, he was angry: and he called together all his friends, and the captains of his army, and them that were over the horsemen.
29 Además, le llegaron tropas mercenarias de otros reinos y de las islas del mar.	29 There came also to him from other realms, and from the islands of the sea hired troops.
30 El número de sus fuerzas era de cien mil soldados, veinte mil jinetes y treinta y dos elefantes adiestrados para la guerra.	30 And the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and thirty-two elephants, trained to battle.
31 Entraron por Idumea y acamparon cerca de Betsur, atacándola durante mucho tiempo con máquinas de guerra. Pero los sitiados, en una salida sorpresiva, se las quemaron y combatieron valerosamente.	31 And they went through Idumea, and approached to Bethsura, and fought many days, and they made engines: but they sallied forth and burnt them with fire, and fought manfully.
32 Entonces Judas levantó el sitio de la Ciudades y acampó en Betzacaría, frente al campamento del rey.	32 And Judas departed from the castle, and removed the camp to Bethzacharam, over against the king's camp.
33 A la mañana siguiente, el rey se levantó de madrugada y condujo apresuradamente al ejército por el camino de Betzacaría. Las tropas se dispusieron para el ataque y se tocaron las trompetas.	33 And the king rose before it was light, and made his troops march on fiercely towards the way of Bethzacharam: and the armies made themselves ready for the battle, and they sounded the trumpets:
34 A los elefantes les mostraron mosto de uva y de moras para excitarlos al combate.	34 And they shewed the elephants the blood of grapes, and mulberries to provoke them to fight.
35 Los animales estaban repartidos entre los batallones. Al lado de cada elefante se alineaban mil hombres con cota de malla y cascos de bronce, además de quinientos jinetes escogidos.	35 And they distributed the beasts by the legions: and there stood by every elephant a thousand men in coats of mail, and with helmets of brass on their heads: and five hundred horsemen set in order were chosen for every beast.
36 Estos estaban pendientes de los movimientos del animal, de manera que adonde iba él, iban también ellos, sin apartarse de su lado.	36 These before the time wheresoever the beast was, the were there: and withersoever it went, they went, and they departed not from it.
37 Cada elefante llevaba encima, sujeta con cinchas, una sólida torre de madera que servía de defensa, y en cada una de ellas iban tres guerreros que combatían desde allí, además del conductor.	37 And upon the beast, there were strong wooden towers, which covered every one of them: and engines upon them: and upon every one thirty-two valiant men, who fought from above; and an Indian to rule the beast.
38 En cuanto al resto de la caballería, el rey la ubicó a un lado y a otro, sobre los flancos del ejército, con la misión de hostigar al enemigo y cubrir a los batallones.	38 And the rest of the horsemen he placed on this side and on that side at the two wings, with trumpets to stir up the army, and to hasten them forward that stood thick together in the legions thereof.
39 Cuando el sol brilló sobre el oro y el bronce de los escudos, sus reflejos iluminaron las montañas que relucían como antorchas.	39 Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold, and of brass, the mountains glittered therewith, and they shone like lamps of fire.
40 Una parte del ejército real se había alineado en lo alto de la montaña, y la otra en el valle. Todos avanzaban con paso seguro y en perfecto orden.	40 And part of the king's army was distinguished by the high mountains, and the other part by the low places: and they marched on warily and orderly.
41 Los israelitas se estremecían al oír el rumor de aquella multitud, el ruido de su marcha y el estrépito de sus armas, porque era un ejército inmenso y poderoso.	41 And all the inhabitants of the land were moved at the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the rattling of the armour, for the army was exceeding great and strong.
42 Entonces Judas se adelantó con sus tropas para entrar en batalla, y cayeron seiscientos hombres del ejército real.	42 And Judas and his army drew near for battle: and there fell of the king's army six hundred men.
43 Mientras tanto, Eleazar, llamado Avarán, vio a un elefante pertrechado con una cota real, que sobresalía entre todos los demás, y pensó que en él iba el rey.	43 And Eleazar the son of Saura saw one of the beasts harnessed with the king's harness: and it was higher than the other beasts: and it seemed to him that the king was on it:
44 Entonces sacrificó su propia vida para salvar a su pueblo y adquirir una fama imperecedera.	44 And he exposed himself to deliver his people and to get himself an everlasting name.
45 Corrió resueltamente hacia él, al través del batallón, matando a derecha e izquierda. Así se abrió paso a un lado y a otro	45 And he ran up to it boldly in the midst of the legion, killing on the right hand, and on the left, and they fell by him on this side and that side.
46 y se deslizó por debajo del elefante, clavándole su espada. Al desplomarse por tierra el animal, cayó sobre él y lo mató.	46 And he went between the feet of the elephant, and put himself under it: and slew it, and it fell to the ground upon him, and he died there.
47 Pero los judíos, al ver el poderío del rey y el empuje de sus tropas, emprendieron la retirada.	47 Then they seeing the strength of the king and the fierceness of his army, turned away from them.
48 El ejército real subió a Jerusalén, al encuentro de los judíos, y el rey acampó frente a Judea y al monte Sión.	48 But the king's army went up against them to Jerusalem: and the king's army pitched their tents against Judea and mount Sion.
49 El hizo la paz con los habitantes de Betsur, que abandonaron la ciudad por carecer de víveres para resistir el asedio, ya que aquel era un año sabático para la tierra.	49 And he made peace with them that were in Bethsura: and they came forth out of the city, because they had no victuals, being shut up there, for it was the year of rest to the land.
50 El rey ocupó Betsur y dejó allí una guarnición para su defensa.	50 And the king took Bethsura: and he placed there a garrison to keep it.
51 Durante mucho tiempo estuvo sitiando el Santuario. Levantó contra él ballestas y torres de asalto, lanzallamas y catapultas, lanza flechas y hondas.	51 And he turned his army against the sanctuary for many days: and he set up there battering slings, and engines and instruments to cast fire, and engines to cast stones and javelins, and pieces to shoot arrows, and slings.
52 Los sitiados, por su parte, construyeron armas similares para el contraataque, y así resistieron mucho tiempo.	52 And they also made engines against their engines, and they fought for many days.
53 Pero, al fin, se agotaron los víveres almacenados, porque era el séptimo año y, además, porque los refugiados en Judea, provenientes de las naciones, habían consumido las últimas reservas.	53 But there were no victuals in the city, because it was the seventh year: and such as had stayed in Judea of them that came from among the nations, had eaten the residue of all that which had been stored up.
54 Así no quedaron en el Santuario más que unos pocos hombres, porque se hacía sentir el hambre. Los demás se dispersaron, cada uno por su lado.	54 And there remained in the holy places but a few, for the famine had prevailed over them: and they were dispersed every man to his own place.
55 Mientras tanto, Lisias se enteró de que Filipo –a quien el rey Antíoco había encargado antes de morir que educara a su hijo Antíoco, para que fuera rey –	55 Now Lysias heard that Philip, whom king Antiochus while he lived had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus, and to reign, to be king,
56 había vuelto de Persia y de Media con las tropas que acompañaron al rey, y trataba de tomar el poder.	56 Was returned from Persia, and Media, with the army that went with him, and that he sought to take upon him the affairs of the kingdom:
57 Por eso pensó que era necesario partir en seguida y dijo al rey, a los capitanes del ejército y a los soldados: «Cada día estamos peor y escasean los víveres; el lugar que asediamos está bien fortificado y nos urgen los asuntos del reino.	57 Wherefore he made haste to go, and say to the king and to the captains of the army: We decay daily, and our provision of victuals is small, and the place that we lay siege to is strong, and it lieth upon us to take order for the affairs of the kingdom.
58 Tendamos la mano a estos hombres, y hagamos la paz con ellos y con toda su nación.	58 Now therefore let us come to an agreement with these men, and make peace with them and with all their nation.
59 Dejemos que vivan según sus costumbres tradicionales, ya que se han irritado y han hecho todas estas cosas, porque nosotros hemos tratado de abolirlas».	59 And let us covenant with them, that they may live according to their own laws as before. For because of our despising their laws, they have been provoked, and have done all these things.
60 El rey y los capitanes aprobaron la propuesta, y el rey mandó ofrecer la paz a los sitiados. Estos la aceptaron,	60 And the proposal was acceptable in the sight of the king, and of the princes: and he sent to them to make peace: and they accepted of it.
61 y el rey y los capitanes se comprometieron con un juramento.	61 And the king and the princes swore to them: and they came out of the stronghold.
62 Con esta garantía salieron de la fortaleza y el rey subió al monte Sión. Pero al ver las fortificaciones de aquel lugar, violó el juramento que había hecho y ordenó destruir la muralla que lo rodeaba.	62 Then the king entered into mount Sion, and saw the strength of the place: and he quickly broke the oath that he had taken, and gave commandment to throw down the wall round about.
63 Luego partió rápidamente y volvió a Antioquía, donde encontró a Filipo dueño ya de la ciudad: lo atacó y ocupó la ciudad por la fuerza.	63 And he departed in haste, and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip master of the city: and he fought against him, and took the city.
