EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 El rey de Egipto reunió un ejército tan numeroso como la arena que hay a orillas del mar y una gran flota, porque pretendía apoderarse con astucia del reino de Alejandro y unirlo al suyo.	1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.
2 Entonces se dirigió a Siria con pretextos pacíficos, y los habitantes de las ciudades le abrían las puertas y salían a su encuentro, porque Alejandro había dado orden de recibirlo, ya que era su suegro.	2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.
3 A medida que Tolomeo entraba en las ciudades, dejaba una guarnición en cada una de ellas.	3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.
4 Cuando estuvo cerca de Azoto le mostraron el templo de Dagón incendiado, la ciudad y sus alrededores en ruinas, los cadáveres esparcidos y los restos calcinados de los que habían sido quemados en la batalla, porque los habían amontonado por donde iba a pasar el rey.	4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.
5 Entonces contaron al rey todo lo que había hecho Jonatán, esperando que lo desaprobara, pero el rey guardó silencio.	5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.
6 Jonatán, por su parte, fue a encontrarse con el rey en Jope con gran pompa: ambos se saludaron y pasaron la noche allí.	6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.
7 Después Jonatán acompañó al rey hasta el río llamado Eléuteros, y de allí regresó a Jerusalén.	7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.
8 El rey Tolomeo se adueñó de las ciudades del litoral hasta Seleucia Marítima. Mientras tanto, maquinaba sus planes contra Alejandro.	8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.
9 A tal efecto, Tolomeo mandó a una embajada al rey Demetrio, con este mensaje: «Hagamos una alianza entre nosotros. Yo te dará a mi hija, la que ahora tiene Alejandro, y tú serás rey en el reino de tu padre.	9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:
10 Estoy arrepentido de habérsela entregado, ya que él trató de asesinarme».	10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.
11 En realidad, le hacía estos cargos porque ambicionaba su reino.	11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.
12 Entonces quitó su hija a Alejandro y se la dio a Demetrio: así rompió con Alejandro y se puso en evidencia su enemistad.	12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.
13 Después entró en Antioquía y se ciñó la corona de Asia, poniendo así sobre su frente dos coronas, la de Egipto y la de Asia.	13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.
14 En ese momento el rey Alejandro se encontraba en Cilicia, porque la gente de aquella región se había rebelado.	14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.
15 Apenas se enteró, salió a combatirlo, pero Tolomeo se movilizó con un poderoso ejército y lo derrotó.	15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.
16 Alejandro huyó a Arabia en busca de refugio, y el rey Tolomeo quedó dueño de la situación.	16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:
17 El árabe Zabdiel le cortó la cabeza a Alejandro y se la envió a Tolomeo.	17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.
18 Pero tres días después murió también Tolomeo, y los habitantes de las plazas fuertes mataron a los egipcios acantonados en ellas.	18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.
19 Demetrio comenzó a reinar el año ciento sesenta y siete.	19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.
20 En ese tiempo, Jonatán reunió a los habitantes de Judea para atacar la Ciudadela de Jerusalén y con ese fin levantó numerosas máquinas de guerra.	20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.
21 Algunos renegados, enemigos de su propia nación, acudieron al rey y le anunciaron que Jonatán tenía sitiada a la Ciudadela.	21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,
22 Esta noticia lo enfureció y en seguida se puso en marcha y fue a Tolemaida. Al mismo tiempo, escribió a Jonatán, ordenándole suspender el asedio e ir lo antes posible a Tolemaida para entrevistarse con él.	22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.
23 Cuando Jonatán se enteró de esto, ordenó continuar el asedio y decidió enfrentar él mismo el peligro: eligió un grupo de ancianos y sacerdotes de Israel,	23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;
24 y fue a Tolemaida a entrevistarse con el rey, llevando consigo plata, oro, vestiduras y muchos otros regalos. De esta manera, se ganó el favor del rey	24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.
25 Algunos renegados de su nación lo acusaron,	25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,
26 pero el rey lo trató como lo habían hecho sus predecesores y lo honró en presencia de todos sus Amigos.	26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,
27 Lo confirmó en el sumo sacerdocio y en todos los altos cargos que había tenido antes, y le dio un lugar preeminente entre sus principales Amigos.	27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.
28 Jonatán pidió al rey que eximiera de impuestos a Judea y a los tres distritos de Samaría, prometiéndole en cambio trescientos talentos.	28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.
29 El rey lo aprobó y extendió a Jonatán un documento acerca de lo conversado, en los siguientes términos:	29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:
30 «El rey Demetrio saluda a su hermano Jonatán y al Pueblo judío.	30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
31 A título de información, les adjuntamos una copia de la carta que hemos escrito acerca de ustedes a nuestro pariente Lástenes.	31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.
32 El rey Demetrio saluda a su padre Lástenes.	32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:
33 Por sus buenos sentimientos hacia nosotros, hemos decidido favorecer al Pueblo judío, que es Amigo nuestro y respeta nuestros derechos.	33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.
34 Les confirmamos los límites territoriales de Judea, con los tres distritos de Aferema, Lida y Ramataim. Estos, con todas sus adyacencias, fueron separados de Samaría y anexados a Judea, para beneficio de los que ofrecen sacrificios en Jerusalén, en compensación por los impuestos reales que el rey percibía de ellos cada año, sobre los productos de la tierra y los frutos de los árboles.	34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.
35 En lo que respecta a nuestros otros derechos –los diezmos, los impuestos que nos corresponden de las salinas, y las coronas de oro– a partir de ahora, los declaramos exentos de toda obligación.	35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.
36 Ninguna de estas concesiones será derogada de ahora en adelante.	36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.
37 Manden hacer una copia de este documento, para entregarla a Jonatán y exponerla en la Montaña santa, en lugar bien visible».	37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.
38 El rey Demetrio vio que todo el país estaba en calma bajo su mando y que no encontraba ningún obstáculo. Entonces licenció a su ejército, enviando a cada uno a su casa, excepto a los extranjeros que había reclutado en las islas de las naciones. Por ese motivo, se atrajo la hostilidad de todas las tropas de sus antepasados.	38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.
39 Trifón, antiguo partidario de Alejandro, al ver que todas esas tropas protestaban contra Demetrio, fue a ver al árabe Imalcué, preceptor de Antíoco, el hijo de Alejandro.	39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,
40 Lo presionó para que se lo entregara, a fin de que reinara en lugar de su padre; lo puso al corriente de todo lo que había hecho Demetrio y del odio que le tenían sus tropas, y permaneció allí mucho tiempo.	40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.
41 Entre tanto, Jonatán pidió al rey Demetrio que retirara las guarniciones de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén y de las plazas fuertes, porque hostigaban continuamente a Israel.	41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.
42 Demetrio mandó decir a Jonatán: «No sólo haré por ti y por tu nación lo que me pides, sino que te colmaré de honores a ti y a tu nación apenas se me presente la ocasión favorable.	42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.
43 Pero ahora harías bien en enviarme algunos hombres en mi auxilio, porque todas mis tropas han desertado».	43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.
44 Jonatán le envió a Antioquía tres mil soldados aguerridos, y cuando se presentaron al rey, este se alegró de su llegada.	44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.
45 Pero los habitantes de la ciudad, unos ciento veinte mil hombres, se amotinaron en las calles con la intención de matar al rey.	45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.
46 Este se refugió en su palacio, mientras la gente ocupaba las calles y comenzaba el ataque.	46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.
47 Entonces el rey pidió auxilio a los judíos, y ellos se agruparon todos juntos alrededor de él. Luego se dispersaron por la ciudad, y ese día mataron a unas cien mil personas.	47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.
48 Después incendiaron la ciudad y recogieron ese mismo día un cuantioso botín, salvando así al rey.	48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.
49 Cuando la gente vio que los judíos dominaban completamente la ciudad, se desanimaron y comenzaron a suplicar al rey:	49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,
50 «¡Hagamos las paces! ¡Que esos judíos dejen de atacarnos a nosotros y a la ciudad!».	50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.
51 Y deponiendo las armas, hicieron la paz. Los judíos se cubrieron de gloria delante del rey y de todos sus vasallos, y regresaron a Jerusalén con un abundante botín.	51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.
52 Así el rey Demetrio se afianzó en su trono real, y el país quedó pacificado bajo su mando.	52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.
53 Pero luego faltó a sus promesas y se distanció de Jonatán, no correspondiendo a los servicios que le había prestado y ocasionándole grandes sufrimientos.	53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.
54 Después de un tiempo, regresó Trifón, acompañado de Antíoco, que todavía era muy joven, y este ocupó el trono, ciñéndose la corona.	54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.
55 Todas las tropas dadas de baja por Demetrio se pusieron de su parte y lucharon contra Demetrio, lo derrotaron y lo obligaron a huir.	55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.
56 Trifón se apoderó de los elefantes y ocupó Antioquía.	56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.
57 Entonces el joven Antíoco escribió a Jonatán, en estos términos: «Te confirmo en el sumo sacerdocio, te pongo al frente de los cuatro distritos y quiero que te cuentes entre los Amigos del rey».	57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.
58 Al mismo tiempo, le envió una vajilla de oro y un juego completo de mesa, autorizándolo a beber en copas de oro, a vestirse de púrpura y a llevar un prendedor de oro.	58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.
59 A su hermano Simón lo designó comandante desde la Escalera de Tiro hasta la frontera de Egipto.	59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.
60 Jonatán salió a hacer un recorrido por la región y las ciudades de este lado del Eufrates, donde se le incorporaron todas las tropas sirias como aliados de guerra. Cuando llegó a Ascalón, sus habitantes salieron a recibirlo con muchos honores.	60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.
61 De allí pasó a Gaza, pero los habitantes le cerraron las puertas. Entonces sitió la ciudad y saqueó e incendió sus alrededores.	61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.
62 Los habitantes de Gaza fueron a pedirle clemencia y Jonatán hizo las paces con ellos, pero tomó como rehenes a los hijos de los jefes y los envió a Jerusalén. Luego atravesó el país en dirección a Damasco.	62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
63 Jonatán se enteró de que los generales de Demetrio se encontraban cerca de Quedes de Galilea con un ejército numeroso, para hacerlo desistir de su proyecto.	63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,
64 Entonces dejó en el país a su hermano Simón y salió al encuentro de ellos.	64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.
65 Simón acampó frente a Betsur, la atacó durante muchos días y la sitió.	65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:
66 Sus habitantes le hicieron una propuesta de paz y él aceptó, pero los obligó a evacuar la ciudad, y se apoderó de ella, poniendo allí una guarnición.	66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.
67 Jonatán y su ejército acamparon junto al lago de Genesaret y, muy de madrugada, llegaron a la llanura de Asor.	67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.
68 El ejército extranjero les salió al encuentro en la llanura, dejando algunos hombres emboscados en las montañas. Mientras el ejército avanzaba de frente,	68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.
69 los que estaban emboscados salieron de sus puestos y entraron en combate.	69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;
70 Los hombres de Jonatán huyeron y no quedó ni uno solo, a excepción de Matatías, hijo de Absalón, y de Judas, hijo de Calfí, generales del ejército,	70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.
71 Jonatán rasgó sus vestiduras, se cubrió de polvo la cabeza y oró.	71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.
72 Luego reanudó el combate, derrotó al enemigo y lo puso en fuga.	72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.
73 Al ver esto, los hombres de Jonatán que huían se unieron de nuevo a él, persiguieron juntos al enemigo hasta su campamento en Quedes, y acamparon allí.	73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.
74 Aquel día cayeron unos tres mil hombres del ejército extranjero. Después Jonatán regresó a Jerusalén.	74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
